I’ve always been a firm believer that family doesn’t always have to be blood. Sometimes the ones we are related to by DNA can treat us so poorly and make us feel invaluable. It’s really about the ones you find along the way who care for you and respect you. Mim Jensen shared her new single “Same Blood” capturing her experience. Will McGillivray produced this song to have that indie pop rock feel with guitar textures and an almost constant drum beat. Mim Jensens vocals are full of vulnerability and emotion and sit beautifully on top of all the melodic layers. This song makes you want to bop your head while simultaneously crying on your bedroom floor.
As someone who sees the world differently from family members and feels secluded from it, I resonated with the lyrics from the first listen. “All you do is push my boundaries, when all you had to do was love me.” Family is supposed to love each other, it’s what everyone says, but how can you hold space in your heart for the family that goes against everything you are. Mim Jensen reminds us that it’s okay to not love those with the same blood and if separating yourself from them is what you need to do, then do it. “We may have the same blood, but that don’t make a difference to me.” “Same Blood” hits such a deep part of me that sat alone with these feelings for so long. Music is meant to be related to and I am thanking Mim Jensen for this masterpiece that I’m sure a lot of us understand all too well.
Mim Jensen is a Aotearoa/New Zealand based singer-songwriter. Taking the emotional aspects of rock n’ roll and blending it into her own sound, she has performed at many festivals and headlined incredible shows. She released her debut single “Germaphobe” back in 2022 which became a huge viral success and inspired her to keep going. She followed it up with two other singles, “Pause Button” and “The Colour Blue,” in 2023. Mim also released her debut EP “Emotional Affair” in 2023. After taking time to write, record and tour, she is now prepping for the release of her next EP, “Shadow Of The Gift.” She writes from her own personal experiences with heartbreak and moments of self reflection. “Same Blood” is our first glimpse into what this EP will be and I can’t wait to hear the rest.
