In her first ever professionally recorded track, Lara Simonot hits the ground running with the release of her single “Scared”. This song is powerful and raw, with Simonot addressing her past lover directly, hating him for taking all of her love and throwing it away, and kicking herself for being scared of him leaving. She looks back on their love, realizing the damage done from the start and how toxic he was. Simonot says, “This song is for anyone who dated a narcissist, a misogynist, or a man in general. It's for the girls who like screaming their hearts out in the car.”
This track starts slow, with just a few piano chords followed by a deep sigh, as if Simonot is finally letting go of all the emotions built up. In the first verse, she slowly explains how he lied, manipulated, and hurt her, and with the first sing of the chorus she has found her voice and becomes stronger with her hatred. The song builds gradually until it explodes into the bridge, where Simonot belts her heart out in angst. Two vocal lines are paired together: the foreground where she chants and yells about how much he hurt her, while the background line highlights her heartfelt tonality as she vocalizes along with the building drum beats. She sings, “You used me like an excuse / Yeah I was tired out there / You held me tight like a noose / Yeah I was fucking scared / If you knew the damage you do / You couldn't even bear / You loved me you said you do / Why was I fucking scared?”
Despite “Scared” being Simonot’s first release, it has amassed over 2k streams in the past week since its release, and has granted Simonot almost 1.5k monthly Spotify listeners already. An independent artist from Toronto, Canada, Simonot is 26 years old. With a similar sound and power to an early Taylor Swift breakup song, she is sure to hit the ground running. Her passion and talent make for a rising pop star, and she certainly has the angst to put into more emotional work.
