"September Dreams" by Jesse Adams is about yearning for a dream to come true. The song is based on a dream the singer had where the person she loved apologized for everything he had done. Finally receiving the acknowledgment that was given only in her mind, Adams sings, "Last night, you got inside my head. Crawled from your separate bed, rewrote my memories." The lyricism is both personal and relatable, allowing listeners to connect through the painful experience of hoping for an apology that never comes. Inventing the closure that she never got, Adams narrates the ballad against the soft backdrop of the seasonal transition to fall. The setting lends itself to the singer's own changing seasons of life, coming to terms with healing on her own.
Mixing an electric sound with characteristics of indie pop, Jesse Adams delivers her third single released this year. Opening the song by singing her lyrics staccato against a musical backdrop of piano and steady synths, Adams gives powerful emotion to her words. Adams' voice moves easily between her registers, moving over lower, velvety notes into a higher register during the song's chorus. The last few verses take on a fantasy-like effect from the combination of quick, high notes, airy background vocals, and stretched-out percussion. Slowly, the music fades out until it's just Adam's voice and piano, mirroring the haze of a dream slipping away after waking up.
Jesse Adams pivoted from her plans of law school to pursuing her dream of making music, finally recording and releasing her first songs in 2022. In 2023, Adams performed alongside 4x Juno award-nominated musician Sarah Slean at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre for their Live and Local series, and co-arranged harmonies for her song Euphoria with producer Emma Whale. The following year, she played the Main Stage at the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, sharing the same stage with names like Kim Mitchell and Kathleen Edwards. The Canadian singer-songwriter is from Hamilton, Canada, where she continues to play shows. Listeners can also catch her live performances in the Greater Toronto Area. "September Dreams" is only the most recent of Adams' upcoming music, promising more enchantment on the horizon.
