Breakups are one thing, but friend breakups are a totally different beast. Sometimes it’s easy to cut out an ex from your life, yet a fractured friendship can leave you feeling lonelier than ever. Sofia Sampaio’s “Soma” is an electrifyingly emotional track that meditates on when we cope unhealthily after the end of a friendship. It highlights the want to run away from our feelings, and yet they’ll chase us down anyways. Through deep introspection and a soundscape that blends Brazilian rhythms with gritty 90s rock, “Soma” is a rollercoaster ride that takes you to the diving lows of friend breakups– so low that we pretend our ex-friends never existed in the first place, numbing the turmoil through denial and anger.
If you love alternative tracks, then “Soma” is going to be your jam– and then some. I’m a definite alt-enjoyer, so this song has been nothing but a delight to have on repeat. There’s a fantastically gritty and rough sound that lays beneath the soundscape, which is super reminiscent of 90s rock. But then it’s blended with airy pop that lifts the entire track upward with its passionate percussion and guitar. It’s a combination that’s balanced so perfectly that it’ll have you coming back for seconds, wondering why your playlist isn’t filled with songs just like “Soma”. And then when you consider its lyrics, you get this amazing track that’s both sonically beautiful and lyrically smooth. Exploring avoidance and the end of friendships, I think anyone who’s had to go through a friend breakup is going to relate so well to this song. “Soma” is one of those tracks I’m going to have on loop for a long time– the sound is simply addicting with a brilliantly catchy chorus and personal, emotional highs.
Sofia Sampaio is an artist whose Brazilian roots blend with a new alternative sound to create something that is entirely her own. Inspired by bands like Sir Chloe and artists like beabadoobee, Sofia’s style is soft and honest, filled with passionate pop that intermingles with rock. It’s music that speaks to you, personal yet still universally relatable– from complicated relationships to musing on friendship, audiences are dazzled by Sofia’s precise lyricism and magnetic soundscapes. Her debut single “better off bored” released in 2025 and was followed by “Soma” not long after. If you enjoyed “Soma”, then you better go listen to “better off bored”, too! And don’t forget to drop Sofia a follow to keep an eye on her next projects!
