Destiny Rundquist

Lunar June, supplements, Cover Art

Lunar June ensures that we get our daily dance break with her new song "supplements". Lunar June has gifted us a song that is not only relatable but upbeat—a perfect summer jam that also connects with us in an emotional way. The song "supplements" gives us a deeper understanding of what it's like to try and change yourself for someone else. Lyrics like, "I've been trying to fix myself for you / But I've been breaking us instead / The cycle is starting again, again, again." allows us to really grasp how hard the artist has tried to get her loved one to stick around. Once we get to the chorus there's a little shift in the lyrics and it becomes more so about how we can be consistent for ourselves. Instead of wanting someone to love us back we can accept the love and appreciation that we grow when we focus on ourselves. The chorus says, "Head rush, I'm gonna lose it / So what, I've been freaking out / Guess I'm cool for the summer / I'll be my own lover."

Lunar June has a unique yet fresh style when it comes to music. Her songs offer a fresh twist on indie and pop. When listening to the song "supplements" we hear a large amount of drums within the song but we also get a fair amount of electronic and synth sounds as well. These sounds blend well with the drums as well as the guitar that plays subtly in the background at the very beginning of the song. The way all of the instruments and electronic beats melt together create a beautiful and cohesive piece with an upbeat, cheery, and empowering mood. When we factor in the artist's voice we're left with a song that's nothing short of a summer masterpiece, sure to make everyone dance when they hear it.

Lunar June is breaking down walls within the musical realm. Her EP 'an ode to the girl i once was' has received praise from Wonderland, Kaltblut Magazine, Ministry of Sound, and many more. Music is something that naturally flows in Lunar June's veins as she is in fact the writer, arranger, producer, and artist behind all of her music to date. She was born in West London and grew up performing in orchestras and jazz bands, which she credits for teaching her the importance of working and performing with other people. When asked about the song "supplements" Lunar June said, "It's called 'supplements' because I became obsessive over self-improvement and was buying every supplement and self-help book under the sun to try and somehow speed through the healing process and become a better person as quickly as possible so I could stay with this person. I felt I was something broken that needed to be fixed. In a weird way, this core belief alone is what was the most destructive element, not my actual brokenness, because we're all broken! No one is perfect and I couldn't see that, and so I lost someone very important to me because I couldn't accept and love myself. At the end of the day, it's our flaws that make us human and lovable. It's okay to not be perfect or totally healed, I don't think either of those things are ever achievable. But that you're still worthy, even when you feel broken." Lunar June's encouragement and powerful lyrics are sure to inspire many. Keep tuning in to see what she does next.
