Review: "The End" - Lullabee

Lullabee The End Cover Art

Rising artist Lullabee has introduced “The End” - an electronically electrifying pop song that makes you want to immediately run to a dance floor. While a relatable sense is brought to the ears of listeners with the track’s breakup narrative, Lullabee’s songwriting goes beyond common storytelling. “The End” dives into a personal, liberating journey that is bittersweet. The track explores, essentially, both sides of a coin - loss on one side, love on the other. As Lullabee delves into the complexities of this relationship, you begin to discover little pieces that stick with you unlike some other pop songs. Although it is undeniably a danceable track, the layers to the relationship in combination with well-crafted lyrics create a listening experience to pay attention to. While listening to “The End”, I found both my head bopping along and my focus directed on how the lyrics made me feel - resulting in a comforting connection between my body & brain, tagging alongside Lullabee’s art.

Upon my first listen of “The End”, I made connections to other artists such as Charli XCX, Robyn, Fred Again.., etc. Lullabee creates the perfect blend of dance, pop, and electronic qualities in her music, drawing similarities to these artists but additionally making her stand out. While Lullabee is a modern artist and has a modern music sound, the song altogether also brings you back to another point in time. I found myself relating “The End” to beloved 80’s hits like Obsession by Animotion and West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys. As my relationship with this song grew over time, so did my keenness toward the specific backing elements that I picked out as I dissected the song. Although they are electronic elements, I discovered specific notes that remind me of classical instruments - just elevated. These bits brought out tones of a light, airy instrument like the flute, while being supported by brilliantly utilized aspects such as a synthesizer. With drums that fade in & out and a voice that melts perfectly into the electronic world laid out before you, you’ll find yourself picturing things like neon lights and a fun, freeing night with your closest friends.

Katie Brown, also known as Lullabee, is a rising musician from London, England. Starting out in 2022, Lullabee originally began making nostalgic indie music. Now, she has transitioned her sound to fall under the umbrella of Alternative Pop. She has been featured on radio stations such as BBC Radio, Amazing Radio UK, and Amazing Radio in the United States. In addition, her content has been recognized & featured by Spotify in their category of “British Indie, Fresh Vibes.” Lullabee says she draws her inspiration from artists such as Mitski, Tove Lo, and BANKS. With soft, comforting vocals and pure craftsmanship of personal experiences, I cannot wait to see more to come from her!
