Review: "The wolf" - Maddie Regent

"The wolf" is the newest single from Maddie Regent, a song about a toxic person that used to be in her life who's presence reopens old wounds. This is how they are introduced in the opening of the song. The lyrics are a take on the idiom "a wolf in sheep's clothing", as they may seem like a nice person, but Regent knows the harsh truth about them, according to her adverse reaction to them. The line "I don't wanna be afraid of you" proves this even further; Regent has a bad past with this person and feels as though she needs to conquer her fear of them, as she knows who they really are.
The production is consistent throughout "The wolf", and you can still tell when the verses end and the choruses begin. This is concurrent with Regent's harmonies throughout the song, which build during different parts of "The wolf". The instrumentation consists of drums and upbeat guitar chords, as well as harmonious strings, along with fun pop sound effects. Regent's edited and pitched down vocals are used as another instrument in the song. The bridge is comprised of background vocals that are continuous, just like the upbeat vibe of this song. Everything mixes perfectly together in "The wolf", with nothing feeling out of place.
Maddie Regent is a music artist from Toronto, Canada. She has been interested in making music for several years after and while growing up listening to different pop stars. Based in New York City, she now has own her pop songs, such as those on her EPs Miss Regent in 2021 and Girl of Your Dreams in 2023. She plans on releasing her album On the phone with my mom in 2025. She has also released other amazing songs, including "Still in Love" and "Heavy Little Things". She is a singer, songwriter, and she edits and directs her music videos, which all show that she is a very talented and creative musician.
