Review: "The Woman You Are" - Jessia

On the first listen of this song, I was on the verge of tears. I have such a strong relationship with my mom, and she is my greatest eternal hero. So, I relate to Jessia in that aspect. "The Woman You Are" is an ode to the best of moms everywhere who have such impenetrable resilience. We as children, especially as daughters, aspire to be even half the women you are. “I’ve been wanting to write a song that celebrates mothers for a while now,” JESSIA writes. There is, of course, a plethora of romantic songs, and even songs about friendships, but songs discussing parents, are few and far in between. Until now.

Jessia continues describing the inspiration behind this song,“I love seeing strong and powerful women raising strong and powerful women. I grew up seeing my mom as a superhero and dreamed of living a life half as adventurous and exciting as hers. The Woman You Are’ is my way of saying thank you to my mom for the years of encouragement and selflessness she has given me. I hope this song sparks more recognition for all the bad ass moms in this world because we wouldn't be who we are without them."As long as we had each other.” Jessia continues to describe life lived with someone seen as superhuman. Plenty of children view their mothers this way, as someone who can do literally anything. I think something worth noting is the fact that Jessia describes less than ideal situations, but how those situations helped to mold the tightknit relationship between her and her mother. “You taught me to see mountains as something to move.” There are many encouraging quotes throughout this song, but, this one is perhaps the strongest one, which is most likely why It's the one leading the chorus that we hear many times throughout the song. Our parents are our very first teachers, they are tasked with teaching us right from wrong, how to conduct ourselves as humans in this world, setting an example for us. This song is heavily accompanied by both guitar and piano, both instruments that tug at your heart strings as it is. However, coupled with these meaningful and heartfelt lyrics, and the icing on top, Jessia’s vocals, and you have yourself a masterpiece of the greatest kind. Jessia has captured this sense of immense gratitude that could never be repaid or replaced and has encapsulated the profound love between a mother and a child. This song is a beautiful reminder to hold on to your loved ones and never take them for granted.

Jessia’s full name is Jessika Harling. Harling is a singer/songwriter who went viral on Tik Tok with her song, “I’m Not Pretty”, in 2021 and began her journey into musical stardom. Jessia has since signed a record deal, earned a JUNO award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2022, and released an EP, titled How Are You?. Jessia’s online following is quite massive with hundreds of thousands of followers across her social media, as well as over 1,100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Jessia has cemented her place in the music world and continues to carve out stats to add to that.
