Review: "Version of You" - Sophia Rae

Sophia Rae, "Version of You," Cover Art

Sophia Rae’s latest single, “Version of You,” is a song that delves into just how blinding love can sometimes be. It discusses how hard it can be to let go of a relationship – so much so that you create a perfect version of them in your head to avoid confronting the reality of the situation. Rae’s lyrics also explore the lightbulb moment that I’m sure many can relate to. She addresses that moment when you finally see the person for who they really are. Her lyrics, “What if I could see you like everyone sees you // What if I could survive without us, without you // You’re a mirror, I’m a mess, you reflect it right back, right back // Falling deeper, even tho I know better than that,” express a deep level of vulnerability and self-reflection that really encapsulate the heartache of letting go.

“Version of You” is an indie-pop ballad with an ethereal, symphonic melody that matches the emotional tone of the song. It starts off with a simple piano and guitar that is met with Rae’s soothing vocals that effortlessly glide listeners through the story. Just before the song enters the first chorus, listeners are met with a beautiful violin melody that is paired with Rae’s soft, hushed harmonies. Together, they flawlessly reflect the somewhat somber, yet empowering story of someone who finds the courage to let go of the idealized person and relationship they envisioned in their head.

Sophia Rae is an 18-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter who wears many hats. Rae has many passions that keep her driven. She is an entrepreneur who alongside her mother, co-launched Girl on Fire Empowerment for teens. Together, they also co-host and produce a mother-daughter podcast called SPARK. In addition, Rae is an accomplished public speaker and mental health advocate who has spoken at various conferences. At just 14-years-old, Rae spoke in front of 200,000 people as a TedX performer. She is also about to embark on a new journey as a student at Arcadia University. While some may just be discovering Rae’s innate talent, she’s been a creator from the very beginning. A lover of writing poetry and short novellas, Rae’s passions are endless, and it’s clear that they’re leading her on the right path.
