Review: "Weatherman" - Zach Hood

Tessa Maddaloni

When relationships have run their course, it is almost always obvious and almost always unavoidable. The feeling is almost like that of an impending rain storm- inevitable and anxiety inducing, a ‘brace for impact’ kind of feeling. Zach Hood’s newest single “Weatherman” puts all of this into words- metaphors of rain clouds and songless birds swirling through an upbeat pop soundscape disguising heartbreaking lyrics. Hood stated that this song is about his own personal experience in a past relationship. Their relationship was all he had ever wanted, but she slowly fell out of love and changed from the girl she once was. Hood describes the last couple of months with her as an incoming storm, and puts this experience into heartbreaking lyrics. The track was initially teased on TikTok, and fans eagerly awaited its release for months as Hood crafted the final work of art.

The song takes listeners through this heartbreaking journey along with Hood, starting from the moment he realized their relationship was coming to a close. He sings about noticing her mood start to switch, and deciding to give her space, but the two never reconnected in the way he had hoped. The storm starts to build through his use of rainy metaphors, singing lines in the chorus like “My eyes they rain / got a cloudy mind” and “The trees are barely moving and the birds are hardly singing / The leaves have left the branches, now I know you’re really leaving”. He references the title when he sings, “‘Sound the alarm,’ the weatherman is screaming”. The weatherman seems to be his own conscience, and similar to real life he is right about the impending doom.

Born and raised in Daphne, Alabama, Zach Hood now resides in Los Angeles and is signed to Arista Records. A subsidiary of Sony Records, a ‘Big Three’ record label, his career has only just begun. Hood has reached almost 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and fans flock to his unique mix of heartfelt and intricate lyrics mixed with an upbeat and fun pop sound. He made his debut in his hometown performing at Hangout Fest in 2022, and has since released multiple singles and an EP. Hood stated “I never let anyone get in my way, I persevered, and I stayed on my path. I just absolutely had to make music.” Make sure to follow the social medias below to stay tuned for more music from Hood.
