A moment of realization settles in for most of us, those potent and overwhelming feelings that settle deep in our hearts when we discover that we have intense feelings for an individual. It’s a moment of clarity and reassurance when we learn where the source of these vehement feelings stems from. There are times, however, when we aren’t quite ready to face these feelings. Perhaps we’ve been through them too many times, and our hearts won’t take another possible heartbreak. Instead, we seem to deny ourselves, deny that resonating ache in our chests that claw at us from within, itching to burst and exclaim the validity of our true feelings. Before we’ve even labeled them, we can’t help but stew on them, trying laboriously to digest the emotions that have suddenly surfaced. “Where did he go?” by Sara Baroni is a song that discusses the same idea, utilizing atmospheric production and thoughtful lyrics to relate and portray these feelings that a plethora of listeners have likely experienced. With lyrics like “You love to follow the sequence of catching feelings” and “I think it’s too late, cause you are just fixating,” these are words that so raw and honest, it can further allow listeners to indulge in their true feelings, and sit with them.
This song opens up beautifully and gradually, the mix of sounds creating something lachrymose and pensive. The slow beat, blended with the serene guitar strings, makes this sound almost nostalgic, as if we are ripping a page away from our memories, lingering on our thoughts. As Sara's voice settles in, we recognize the sense of passion and heartfelt sentiment that her presence adds, the lyrics not only providing intricate meaning to the song, but also describing something that is thoroughly relatable, touching the hearts of listeners who have perhaps endured such emotions that the song describes. Taking a minute to relish the song for what it is, I cherish its raw depth and how transparent it is. Innately, many of us experience what the song describes, that strange gray area in the stages of being interested in someone. When we aren't quite ready to label our emotions, perhaps out of fear, instead we stay quiet, and simply reflect on ourselves, waiting for that sign. Waiting for the right time, when our hearts are finally ready to give in, and voice our strong affections.
