Review: "White Flag" - Devon Alexander

Relationships experience peaks that make you feel like you are on top of the world and valleys that can leave you with a deep sense of hopelessness. The climb is normal, as no healthy and communicative is without hurdles or disagreements. However, sometimes the peaks get lower and the valleys get deeper, and you know that you have to move on. This is what Devon Alexander illustrates beautifully in his track “White Flag.” Alexander paints a narrative portrait of the experience in having to face the music and end a relationship. Even when people want to continue fighting, sometimes you’re forced to wave the white flag.

The introduction begins with an echoey ambience that is replaced by vocals that sound vulnerable and exposed over strums of a guitar. Alexander demonstrates his wide vocal range with his higher register in the pre-chorus. Drums pick up for the chorus adding energy to the song that serves to create a more devastating emotional impact. Throughout the track, Alexander sprinkles in beautiful vocal harmonies on top of the melody that further demonstrate his artistic prowess. In his song “White Flag,” Alexander blends musical intellect with an emotional awareness that connects on an intimate level with listeners everywhere.

He works primarily within the pop music genre, taking inspiration from artists such as Etta James, Dua Lipa, and Shawn Mendes. Alexander blends soul with modern pop in a delectably artistic manner. His initial mark was made as a Top 40 Finalist on season 18 of American Idol.
