Review: "young forever" - REIGN

Summer’s coming up, and the search for the best summer song continues. A new single by Reign (stylized as REIGN),  titled “Young Forever” (stylized as “young forever”), may be that summer song for you. In the song, Reign, also known as Jasmyn Kersey, reminisces on a relationship that falls into all the teenage love tropes: bike rides at midnight, kissing in the rain, lockers full of flowers–everything the movies have. This song is a synthy, dreamy pop song, and Kersey sings that this teen movie relationship is “a beautiful mess / I’ll never forget,” a continuation throughout the song, with Kersey also saying that the relationship is “locked in my head / never forget.” Not everything has a movie ending, though, as Kersey writes that she “lied and said [she hater her partner] cause love was something brand new,” leaving listeners to realize that the relationship didn’t get a happily-ever-after, leaving Kersey longing to remember the past and be young forever.

I love Kersey’s production on this track–it’s probably my favorite feature of the song. It reminds you of what summer feels like: feeling like the memories made will be remembered and cherished forever. The production fits right in with other summer classics and is perfect for soundtracking a montage in a rom-com. Plus, you can’t go wrong with any synths. While my favorite part of “young forever” is the production mainly, it really does hit home for me on what falling in love while in high school feels like–this song sounds like it. All I ever wanted in high school was to have a soundtrack to my life, and with “young forever,” I finally found the romance montage for that very soundtrack.

Reign, also known as Jasmyn Kersey, is a Canadian singer-songwriter. A pop singer, “young forever” is Kersey’s first single from her hugely anticipated EP, DESIDERIUM. While this might be Kersey’s first single off of DESIDERIUM, she is no stranger to music. Having over 625,000 streams on Spotify alone, Kersey has appeared in over 14 editorial playlists and has nearly 14,000 followers on Instagram. While Reign is mainly pop, “young forever” has a wide appeal, already having over 1,000 streams on Spotify. While Reign may only have one single off of DESIDERIUM released, listeners eagerly await more. If you’re looking for a summer song, “young forever” may hit the spot.
