Love it or hate it, social media has had the music industry in a chokehold for years now. Its impact is undeniable, influencing how we consume music, what we listen to, and which artists turn into a viral sensation. While many songs have made their way to the forefront of short-form videos, Pop Passion has compiled a list of Top 10 Viral Hits Trending on Social Media in 2024, encompassing the best you can hear while doom scrolling your app of choice.

10. "Close To You" by Gracie Abrams

Released as the second single from The Secret of Us, the synth-pop sensation “Close To You” was delivered to the world on June 7, 2024. The track was initially released as a 20 second snippet 7 years ago and was not intended to be part of the album’s track list until Gracie Abrams revisited it for her fans. She shared a demo on TikTok at the beginning of 2024 of the then-unreleased song, receiving positive reception from listeners as the song went viral and leading her to include the track on The Secret of Us.

9. "misses" by Dominic Fike

Short and sweet, “misses” by Dominic Fike has been making waves on social media since its May 2024 release. The cute little ditty is only slightly over a minute long, coming off the artist’s new EP, 14 Minutes. “misses” is indie pop at its finest, featuring quaint melodies, twangy guitar riffs, rich vocal harmonies, and Fike’s raw voice delivering lines about a woman who seems to be oblivious to his affections.

8. "Heaven is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carlisle

Bringing back an oldie but goodie, Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” has been making a comeback via TikTok and Instagram. The power pop track has been used by itself to soundtrack hundreds of thousands of short-form videos and has also been mixed with the infamous “Brotha Eww” sound that has been circulating on social media since early 2024. Bookstagram and BookTok have run wild with tugboat_spenny’s spin on this trending sound, using it to differentiate between things that are repulsive in real life but fantastic in fiction. Reviving Carlisle’s most popular song, the fun trend has given new life to “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” and exposes new ears to the 1987 chart-topping hit.

7. "Take My Breath Away" by EZI

Reimagining a track from 1986, EZI put a new spin on the Berlin classic “Take My Breath Away.” The track was initially released in 2019 but has since found new life on social media in 2024. Across various platforms, many content creators and influencers have been using clips of the mellow chill-pop variation EZI has created, finding the artist new fans through the viral hit.

6. "Please Please Please" by Sabrina Carpenter

Being one of many songs to go viral for Sabrina Carpenter, “Please Please Please” is the latest song from the artist to captivate the world. The disco-pop track follows the commercial success of “Espresso” with both singles leading up to the release of her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet. Alongside the song’s viral performance, “Please Please Please” has become Carpenter’s first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and has topped charts in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

5. "Cruel Summer" by Taylor Swift

Bringing an old favorite back to the forefront, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” has been making a resurgence on social media since the artist embarked on the Eras Tour last year. The renewed interest in the synth-pop song resulted in “Cruel Summer” topping the charts once again and became Swift’s 41st song to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It continues to be used in short-form videos today and is currently one of Swift’s top songs on Spotify, proving that “Cruel Summer” remains to be a fan favorite.

4. "Beautiful Things" by Benson Boone

Beginning his campaign for the song in 2023, Benson Boone started teasing “Beautiful Things” on December 3, garnering over 130 million views with its sound until its release in January 2024. The track quickly became a chart-topping hit, lingering to this day on social media as influencers and content makers use clips of “Beautiful Things” to accompany their reels. It’s impactful melodies and positive message make it a song to remember, reflecting on the gratitude for love, life, and the unpredictability of happiness.

3. "My Love Mine All Mine" by Mitski

Serving as Mitski’s commercial breakthrough, “My Love Mine All Mine” quickly found success on TikTok and became the artist’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 26. The track’s success is remarkable considering the lack of promotion Mitski did for “My Love Mine All Mine” or the album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, leaving us to thank TikTok for bringing the song into the limelight. By October 2023, “My Love Mine All Mine” soundtracked over 300,000 short-form videos and continues to bless our ears on social media to this day.

2. "Good Luck, Babe!" by Chappell Roan

Coming on the heels of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Chappell Roan has released the first song of her next chapter. “Good Luck, Babe!” was released on April 5, 2024, taking the internet by storm and becoming a chart-topping queer anthem. Roan wrote the track with Justin Tranter and Dan Nigro, lyrically addressing compulsory heterosexuality as Roan describes a relationship with a woman who is trying to deny her feelings for Roan and women in general. Showcasing her vocal prowess, Roan’s voice soars on “Good Luck, Babe!” and shows the world exactly why she’s your favorite artist’s favorite artist.

1. "Too Sweet" by Hozier

Following his third studio album, Unreal Unearth, Hozier released his fifth EP, Unheard, featuring four unreleased tracks taken from the album’s studio sessions. “Too Sweet” was the first song released from the EP, becoming a commercial success and topping the charts in Australia, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The number one single quickly became an internet sensation, being used for short-form videos across social media upon its release. Though it was surprising to have new music from Hozier so soon after the release of Unreal Unearth, it is not shocking as to why “Too Sweet” has captivated the world. Between Hozier’s sonorous vocals, the groovy bass lines, and seductive melodies, “Too Sweet” is just simply irresistible.
