Review: "All My Relations" - Will Evans

Will Evans’s latest single is an upbeat track composed of lyrics that discuss the delicate truth that life is fleeting and it can slip away at a moment's notice. “All My Relations” was written after Evans’s own near-death experience, when he nearly drowned while winter surfing in the icy New England sea. After surviving this harrowing event, he began looking at life, and afterlife, through a new lens. Evans immerses the audience into this surreal moment by beginning the first verse with the lyrics: “Oh my child you can feel it coming// Waves across the sea// Close my eyes as it crashes over// Tell me what it means.” Although this may appear to be a metaphor to the simple listener, it directly references the dark experience. As the track continues, Evans recites lyrics that indicate the grim thoughts that went through his mind during what he thought would be his final moments. In the chorus he sings, “I'm falling out of reach// I can hear the spirits calling me// My body I must leave//All my relations come to welcome me.” His thoughts were eerily calm, almost accepting of his mortal fate. At the time, he thought he was already gone and was ready to leave. Fortunately, it was not his time to go and he survived. Now, Evans uses his experience to spread his message of hope and allow fans that relate to find comfort in his words. This is a sensitive topic that is not often found in the genre, yet Evans explores it eloquently, demonstrating his wise disposition through his clever songwriting.

“All My Relations” is an energizing indie-pop song that naturally fills the listeners with unrelenting hope. The production has an airy and beachy element to it that is authentic to Evans sound, and perfectly encapsulates the inspirational storyline. The verse begins with an acoustic guitar that utilizes a unique strum pattern, pulling focus on each individual note. Simultaneously, a keyboard creates a subtle synth sound effect that provides an angelic element. When Evans begins singing, the listener is comforted by his powerful, yet soothing vocals that further enhance the breezy atmosphere. In the chorus, the music intensifies with the addition of the drums and a banjo. Contrasting the guitar-led verses, the chorus relies heavily on the drums, creating an explosive effect to the production. In “All My Relations”, Evans effortlessly guides the listener through the track with his mesmerizing vocals, poetic lyrics, and infectious melody. His talent and uplifting persona are a rarity within the industry and his music deserves to be added to every feel-good playlist.
