Review: "Dark Side" - Sadye

Human personality is like an onion because we have different layers of ourselves that we show others. Our loved ones get a deeper glimpse than those that are strangers. It feels good when people show us the deeper layers because it demonstrates trust. Sometimes, it may take a while to build this and that’s okay. Still, it can be frustrating to know that we’re not trusted, especially when we really care about the person. Sadye knows how it feels to be closed out and vents about it in her new single, “Dark Side.” In doing so, she inspires listeners to embrace their literal and figurative scars.

Sadye admits that she can be dramatic, and every aspect of “Dark Side” serves as a testament to this. The instrumentation consists of a drumbeat and grungy electric guitar. There is also another layer added to create a spooky vibe. For example, on the words, “I wanna spill your guts,” there is a perfectly timed sound of a knife slicing. Another line that stood out to me was “nothing cuts deeper than you closing me out.” This is a line at the end of the chorus. You can apply bandages or stitches to literal wounds and they will heal with time. However the figurative wound of broken trust never heals.

Sadye is a singer/songwriter based in the United States. She uses music as an outlet to express her feelings; she hopes that telling her stories will help other listeners. “Dark Side” is her second single of 2023 and overall. Her debut single, “Biblical” was released in early May of this year. It has a similar instrumentation to “Dark Side,” as it is grungy and upbeat. It also deals with embracing your scars. The lyrics talk about a rebirth, accepting the past and moving forward. Sadye is just getting started and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
