Review: "Devil On My Shoulder" - Julia Shuren

The feeling of getting out of a toxic relationship is liberating, exhilarating, and fulfilling. That is exactly what Julia Shuren’s newest single “Devil On My Shoulder” talks about. Her lyrics are accusatory and strong, singing about how much hell she has been put through. In order to write lyrics that indict her ex in this way, it was clear that she needed the emotional release of creating this song. The track has electric synths and plucky guitar chords, swelling and pulsating with the beat. The pop influences tied with her soulful and emotive voice make this song impossible not to love, and one to add to a playlist that you blast in the car once you have realized you deserve better.

The song is snarky and energetic, and opens with Shuren speaking directly to her ex with a vintage phone call effect, stating, “Now that I’m not under your spell / There’s just a few things I’d like to say out loud…” She then goes on to recount how horrible he made her feel, after all she did was lift him up. The title comes to fruition at the end of the chorus when she sings, “You took my light to the darkness / Just a devil on my shoulder”. She reduces him and the hell he put her through to just a little voice in her head, one she can certainly brush right off. She ends the song with thanking god that they are over, and the audience can feel her relief that she no longer has to deal with the mental turmoil of this relationship.

Accumulating almost 100,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Julia Shuren makes it a goal to not be placed in a certain box of genres, and makes music all throughout the industry. Her biggest hit is her single “Casablanca”, which has garnered over 2 million streams since it was released in July of 2022. She has been noticed by artists such as Kygo and Motown songwriter Paul Riser, and has had multiple songs featured on Spotify’s biggest editorial playlists. She was also featured on “Detroit Performs,” a PBS show featuring songwriters. Make sure to follow the social medias below to stay tuned for more music from Shuren.
