Poolguard’s “Drunk in Idaho” is a cinematic listen that details the push and pull of growth in your twenties. It starts with Mckala Cass’s realization that she’s in too deep, unable to “reply” or “go back in time,” reveling in truthful advice provided by her friends. She sings “what do I know, what do I really know” which is a sort of existential thinking that fuels self-reflection. This is representative of the awkward, thrilling, and devastating milestones in ages 20-29. After sifting through racing, compulsory thoughts, the vocalist wonders if she’s to blame, singing “wanna make change” and “got me tipping on my toes”, while reminiscing on the events that shaped her life. Poolguard closes the song with an answer for anyone investigating the title: “you don’t have to explain nothing/ now that I’ve forgotten/ Why I have been running/ Now I’m drunk in Idaho”. This fulfills listener inquiry and makes sense of the rest of the song with an adventurous, main character conclusion laced with the familiarity of a malicious version of nostalgia. There’s no escape in this song, only change.
The track begins with mellow, upbeat strings that introduce Mckala’s indie-style vocals. Poolguard creates a summer savvy sound that encapsulates the spirit of a young June. This song is a groovy, indie-pop take on outgrowing age supported by a standout electric guitar and snazzy bass line. It has the signature indie music muffle that makes it sound like listening to a retro radio. Occasional static adds dimension to the soundscape, cut by a lively chorus that distracts from the struggle in the lyrics. The range of instruments in Poolguard’s “Drunk in Idaho” contributes to a complex collectivity that hints at expert production. Gradually closing with elongated vocals, then abruptly restating the title of the track, brings this song full-circle with a cliffhanger ending that requires another listen.
Poolguard is a US music project based in Atlanta, GA made up of members from “Jack and the Other”, along with Mckala Cass. The musicians directing this track met on Vampr, and recorded new release “Drunk in Idaho” at a home studio. The artist notes inspiration from Dayglow and Foster the People, working towards a positive sound that “fits people’s vibe” no matter the mood. "Drunk in Idaho" is based on a true story, making the song more authentic. Poolguard's sound is distinct, bubbly, and projects chilly rays of light to simultaneously entrance, uplift, and stun their listeners. “Drunk in Idaho” is Poolguard’s first single, and first release.
