Matilde G’s new single, GELATO, is an upbeat alt/pop rock song about infatuation, desire, and emotional addiction. It is based on the universally loved Italian dessert. I have a local gelato shop that I’m obsessed with... although none of you asked for that tidbit. Anyway, the music video shows her and three others facilitating a break-in and robbery of a dessert shop in search of chocolate gelato. It’s actually quite funny how neighbors thought a real crime was taking place as they were filming. Can you imagine?! I feel that the music video is perfect for the lighthearted nature and youthful tone of the song.
GELATO gives us production, instrumentation, and playful lyrics such as “I’m still licking my lips. I wanna get lost in the flavour of you. You're sweet like gelato”. “Mi sci scoglie in bocca” means it melts in my mouth. Thank you for teaching me Italian! I don’t know how, but I’ve unintentionally managed to review several commercial/mainstream projects in a row that had anywhere from one lightly seasoned rock track to a completely developed rock record. Does this mean rock is becoming mainstream again? I really hope so! If it does, I’ll never stop talking about it!
Matilde G is an Italian-born singer, songwriter, and performer currently based in Singapore. She is one of the most promising new voices of the international pop rock scene having amassed over 30 million streams across 180 different countries. She released her first full-pledged rock album, Beautiful Wreckage, in October 2025. Having been influenced by Halsey, Paramore, YUNGBLUD, and Maneskin, she wanted her music to capture raw emotion, unfiltered truth, rebellion, energy, and vulnerability. I can safely say that she’s made an impression on me and I would recommend checking her out. If you need me, I’ll be listening to that rock album!
