A major lesson learned while

growing up is the fact that you are not going to be perfect all of the time. Intrinsically, people have an innate sense to be impressive and succeed. When it feels like suddenly you are not succeeding as strongly as you used to, it is natural to look inside, doubt yourself, and become negative. Taylor Bickett’s latest single details this feeling with her descriptive vocals and sweet tonality. “'Goldstar' is a letter to myself, or more accurately, my inner child,” she says. “I’ve struggled with perfectionism and self-criticism my whole life, and I find that it helps to think about myself as the little girl who just loved to sing and tell stories.” Bickett’s kind words to herself help listeners speak the same kindness to themselves, and allow them to take a step back and realize that they are doing a much better job than they think they are, life just got a little harder to deal with as they grew.

The track opens with an immediate pull at the heart strings, as Bickett layers audio from a home video with the beginning chords. You hear a little girl’s babbling voice, and an older female voice telling her she is very smart, and to say “Yay Taylor”. The little girl, young Bickett, responds back with “Yay Taylor”, in a way only a young girl full of heart and hope could. The song starts right away with Bickett explaining that she always gets through challenges, pushing herself to her limits. In the chorus she sings, “Goldstar girl, what's the rush? Where's the race? / Blue ribbon baby, why the look on your face?...Goldstar girl, tell me what you chase.” She questions what the need is to constantly not feel enough, with other lyrics throughout the verses like “I’ve got grass stained knees and a lot to prove” and “I don’t need affection, I just need to be impressive / No one knows that I’m defective but me”.

Taylor Bickett was born and raised in Indiana, and is now based in Nashville, TN. Songwriting and music has always been a part of who she is, and she has grown into an incredible lyricist with a knack for honesty. Fans love how they can relate strongly to Bickett and her words, as her songs detail hard truths like newfound adulthood, heartbreaks, and deep insecurities. She hit her big break with her 2022 single “QUARTER LIFE CRISIS”, which went viral for the lyrics “I swear 16 was yesterday, but now I’m closer to 28” and now has over 40 million streams. Bickett is currently on tour supporting Devin Kennedy, and will headline her own tour this coming fall of her debut album “Nothing I Can’t Undo”, coming July 17th.
