Review: "Hurtable" - Drew Schueler

Hurtable By Drew Schueler

Drew Schueler’s latest release, “Hurtable”, focuses on the fears and freedoms of finding vulnerability.  The majority of the lyrics are centered around how terrified Schueler has found himself, how easily he can be hurt in this relationship, and yet it comes off as a love song.  Because, this fear is only the product of a high risk high reward situation.  He can be hurt because he so suddenly has everything to lose.  If the relationship means nothing to lose, it means nothing at all, Schueler explores the beauty of weakness and compares the height of it to the height of love. He skillfully compares fear and love and clarifies their consistently going hand in hand.

Drew immediately introduces the song with a method of storytelling, setting the exact scene for this realization before describing the feelings themselves and, therefore, allowing the listener to fully place themselves in his shoes.  Each line expressing his affections is immediately counteracted, or by his perspective- reaffirmed, with a line expressing his fear or hurt.  His heartfelt vocals as well as the careful placement of powerful instrumentals make this comparison and the song as a whole increasingly impactful.  Even his use of silence is staggering, with pauses in his instrumentals, leaving his voice alone, being some of the hardest hitting portions of the piece.

Drew Schueler is a rising singer and songwriter currently based in Nashville, the center of such fields.  Each piece Schueler releases differs and surprises his audience while retaining the pieces which make it so valuable.  He maintains his pop focused genre, and his skillful lyricism in everything he produces.  This consistency has gained him an audience over the years, with over 24k listeners found on his Spotify to date since his first release “Open Water” in 2018.  This consistency, found only from hard work, has earned him his audience as well as recognition, being the recent winner of the NSAI Song Contest.
