In a new single that both revitalises Audrie Powell’s country roots and acts as an ode her lover, “Leaves Fall” tells the story of life and love. Powell grew up in a small town in Idaho, and after moving to Portland, Oregon, felt as if she lost herself to the more populated culture, forgetting about her small town roots. This new single explains her life now after reconnecting with an old friend, now turned boyfriend. She states “He brought me back to my roots, taking me camping, back to nature, and, most importantly, back to listening to country/folk music again.” This track is about living in the moment and appreciating natural things, the leaves falling in the colder seasons and the feeling of genuine love late into the night.
Starting with a simple guitar strumming, she completes the soundscape and sets the scene with the sounds of a car starting and leaves crunching. In the chorus, she sings “Leaves fall can barely catch the moment / Never been a materialistic person / And I’m on the tailgate of his truck / The sun goes down but he lifts me up / When life moves fast hold on to what's important”. Her voice is emotive and rich, and pairs perfectly with a simple backing. Her lyrics are descriptive and tell stories, describing a scene the two shared late at night sipping whiskey and talking about wedding rings. Along with the beautiful storytelling within this track, there is a short film featuring Powell and her boyfriend, Oregon native Brady Deene Johnson. The film follows the two as their love grows, buying a house together, painting and decorating, and growing old in the place that fostered their young love.
Audrie Powell doesn't remember a time when music wasn't a staple in her life. “My mother even says I sang my first words,” she says, and she remembers standing on tables for guests and impromptu performances in restaurants for anyone who would listen. After moving out of her small town, she fell victim to caring more about current trends in music and artistry than staying true to herself. She recounts feeling disappointed in herself after shows, knowing she was not being genuine. After falling in love with Johnson, she says he reignited her small town roots, and now she feels so much more like her old self. Thank you to Johnson for bringing out the best in Powell, and thank you to Powell for prioritizing genuineness over what sells nowadays.
