“Narcissistic” by Jade LeMac is sultry electropop perfection, with an addicting melody and clever lyrics. It’s refreshing to hear a song from a villainous point of view, unapologetically owning up to her toxicity in the relationship, but calling out the fact that the other person isn’t fully innocent either. Seductive lyrics such as “It gets so hot when I’m picking a fight/Call me crazy and I’ll show you you’re right /Say you love me then I’ll bite” reel the listener despite knowing her bad intentions, which beautifully parallels the way her lover can’t resist her either. When listening to LeMac sing “I’ll stay narcissistic/You could be my victim” you can’t help but volunteer to be her victim, even knowing what she’s doing is wrong.
The track features an upbeat and energetic tempo, with electronic elements and a driving rhythm. The production incorporates synthesizers and a pulsating beat, giving it an edgy and seductive feel. The distorted vocal effects, particularly in the chorus, add a layer of detachment and defiance, reinforcing the idea that LeMac is unapologetic about her actions. She builds anticipation with beat drops before the chorus, which also adds the edgy vibes created in the song. This accompanies lyrics like “I get so bored when I try to be nice,” playing with tension that mirrors the emotions she creates in the song. The bold, dark, and energetic production effectively captures the theme of defiance and empowerment created by a villainous narrative.
