Review: "on-call girl" - India Thieriot

on-call girl India Thieriot Cover Art

"on-call girl" by India Thieriot is a powerpop song that expresses the singer-songwriter's passionate feelings of love and wanting. Production-wise and lyrically, this song is as if Thieriot took the butterflies you get when you first develop feelings for someone and formed them into an energetic anthem that many can relate to. Thieriot details how she is unable to stop thinking about her love interest, and in turn, makes her whole life revolve around him. Her first impression of him lead her to quickly fall head over heels, causing her to compare him to God. Thieriot calls herself his "on-call girl" because she wants to be with him all the time.

Two different synths are concurrent with one another - a low ethereal tone, and a powerful high-pitched dance synth. Combined with syncopated drums and their instrumentation, as well as Thieriot's distinctive voice, "on-call girl" is a prime example of what pop music should be. Unique and iconic musical elements are presented in this sonically cheerful tune, such as the melody of the synths changing throughout the song, and the spoken bridge, where the volume of the production dips, only to rise again. The up-tempo vibes of this song manage to encapsulate the New York night life, where Thieriot is based as a musician.

India Thieriot moved to New York City to pursue her career writing and singing her music. Her music style is alike to other one-of-a-kind artists, including MARINA and Chappell Roan. She is incredibly talented, and has made other great songs alongside "on-call girl", such as "Do You Remember Me Now?", "Take Some Space", and "Montage". She started releasing music in 2016, and since then has collaborated with the music artists Thando and JusSke on their song "God Complex". Thieriot has an amazing discography and is deserving of much more recognition.
