Review: "Sliding Doors" - Tally Spear

Sliding Doors by Tally Spear Cover Art

Grappling with what could have been, Tally Spear's new single "Sliding Doors" explores the speaker's indecision through honest lyrics and a bold sound. The song dives into the speaker's mindset, expressing how it holds her back, saying "always thinking in parallels, I wish I could make it stop". An anthem for overthinkers, this song takes on the realities of a mental back-and-forth while inspiring listeners to understand that they cannot change the past. Beyond being stuck in circles of thought, the lyrics show the speaker's fear, specifically through a question in the chorus: "what if I got it wrong?" It's a debilitating feeling to not trust yourself that leads to a fundamental discomfort with most things in your life. The song captures this feeling with the words "never paying attention to my intuition". Using introspective questions and openly confused statements, this song becomes a comfort to listeners, telling us we're not the only ones who don't have life all figured out.

With a message as delicate as questioning your path in life, "Sliding Doors" takes on a hard-hitting and energetic tune that takes the words to a new level of power. Passion-fueled electric guitar opens the song, then cuts out as percussion and Tally's expressive vocals join in. A cyclical feeling comes from the drums and vocals in the pre-chorus, before a mighty sound breakthrough when Tally belts through the chorus. Her voice is filled with emotion, showcasing her range with a punch that feels like she's yelling at the world. The drums are forceful, merging with the same electric guitar riff from the opening of the song to bring the sound in raging like a storm. While this song is about not being sure of yourself, the confidence of the sound aligns that uncertainty a part of the speaker's identity.
