Review: "Sunburn" - SINEM

SINEM Sunburn Cover Art.

"You might as well be dead". What a way to begin a song, it brings a serious tone to the song that the music began to show. The way SINEM's voice goes even higher on the most painful parts of the song really drives the heart break right into your soul as you listen. SINEM writes “This song is about loving somebody who's losing themselves. It resembles the feeling of a bright summer day fading into a burning sunset. The production of this track sounds organic thanks to acoustic guitars and live drums.” SINEM captivates the listener as the story goes deeper into just what has occurred here to lead to such a somber mood.

That imagery that SINEM mentions in what the song is meant to capture is quite the picture. “The feeling of a bright summer day fading into a burning sunset.” With this imagery in mind, SINEM beautifully illustrates all that comes with loving someone and how that love can be unwavering even long after the person becomes a shell of who they used to be. The sun still has all of its bright shiny power, but it’s now taken new form into a sunset, the sun is going down, and so is all of its brightness. SINEM’s usage of her head voice when singing the most delicate parts “they gave you tinted glasses to make the sunshine when it rains”. It seems as if SINEM is saying that they tried to hide the darkness from her loved one but they saw through the facade being presented to them. SINEM mainly focuses on the here and now- “I still love you even if you’re faded”. And again, with present tense -“I look through your eyes and see there’s not much left.” I think it’s important to note that SINEM speaks about looking through someone’s eyes and not in them. At this point in time, there’s no longer anything in them, but SINEM can see straight through them, see emptiness. One can only imagine how absolutely heartbreaking it must be to look at someone and have so many memories of the person they used to be, but be met with their current state which is a hollowed-out version of them. So, in the end, we’re left with the question of Do we stay? Do we try and help them rebuild themselves? Or do we let go?.

With this song, 19-year-old German/Turkish singer/songwriter, SINEM, gives voice to an emotion that many know all too well, the pains of true unconditional love. She narrates the heartbreaking tale of losing someone without physically losing them. SINEM’s voice is a force to be reckoned with as she lends it to storytelling for all to hear. Her voice has been described as “unparalleled” and “ a force that transcends genres, reflects the maturity and depth of a seasoned artist despite her young age.” SINEM’s social media presence is sprinkled with clips of her singing classics as well as her original songs. SINEM’s original songs seem to focus heavily on human experience and breaking stigmas. SINEM’s online presence is one that dots all of the I's that are expected of us all today – Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Tik Tok, YouTube, she is both seen and heard at her own discretion, much to her fans’ delight. Be sure to keep up with all things SINEM by following her at her socials below, I know I will be!
