"Tornado" by Havanna Winter is a pop jam that uses Wizard of Oz themes to remind listeners that you don't have to let toxic people take you down the wrong path in your life. We are surrounded by manipulative people in this world, but sometimes they aren't always easy to spot. You may think someone has your best interest in mind, but their true intentions will show eventually. "Tornado" is Havanna's message to you, to stay true to yourself and be strong against people like this. A common misconception of what "somewhere over the rainbow" means is that it's about daring to dream and not losing hope. However, in "Tornado", Havanna uses the true meaning of what it is to be "somewhere over the rainbow" in her lyrics, You must be fucking high / To ever think that I'd / Be your lover over the rainbow; which actually means to live live in delusion and madness. On the topic of her new song, Havanna said, “This project is close to my heart. I think we all know or have come across people who are not genuine or have our best interest in mind sometime in our lives, and this song is made as a reminder not to let our fears and insecurities win, and to remember our own strength, because we can all get a little lost sometimes.”
Comparing a past lover to the characters of the Wizard of Oz, Havanna sings these lyrics - You're just a tin man / Got a brain like a tin can /You're such a coward / Lions your superpower. She also compares him to the wizard himself, with the words, Turns out the wizards' just a fraud. Dressed as Dorothy with her sparkly red shoes and braids in the music video directed by Éli Sokhn, Havanna Winter takes us through a Wizard of Oz experience; both in the music and in the visuals. The song takes a hauntingly old-fashioned chord progression and makes it modern pop with it's production. With a sarcastic smile on her face throughout the music video, Havanna sings in her higher register for the majority of the song, adding to the dreamy and classic 1930's effect.
Havanna Winter is a 17-year-old aspiring pop singer, actress and a viral TikTok influencer who was born in Norway but moved to California at the age of nine. With over 3 million followers on TikTok, Havanna has won over the hearts of our current generation. She released her debut single as an artist in 2022, titled "Rain Rain Go Away". Since then she's released 5 more singles, including "Tornado" and a Christmas song titled "Daddy's Kissing Santa Claus.'
