Review: "What it Takes 2 Let U Go" - Kimberly June

What it Takes 2 Let U Go by Kimberly June Cover Art

Affirmations, meditations, and medications can't always erase the intense pain of a breakup. From missing your ex to being hurt by the way you've been wronged, "What it Takes 2 Let U Go" by Kimberly June spans all the post-breakup emotions that come out to play. With lyrics like "you tell 'em how I acted but you never tell 'em why", the song will have your heart aching right along with the speaker, its words acting as a window into the relationship and the way the ex moved on before it even ended. Intimate lyrics wrapped in memories of physical touch and deep connection draw you closer into the delicate nature of the situation before the bridge brings an answer to moving on. It acknowledges that denial isn't working and says "got to go through you now". Even when you're putting in the work to get over a breakup, it's hard not to be haunted by memories. This song allows you to feel the good and the bad on a journey of healing.

An intimate, confessional sound will have you hanging onto the lyrics in this indie folk track. The song starts off with guitar playing briefly at the beginning of each line of the verse, sounding out a brief chord before halting altogether as Kimberly's vocals take the focus. Her singing is breathy and narrative, with an expressive tune that hits the ear with a more conversational feeling. Her vocals smooth out into a high and melodic sound in the prechorus as the guitar gains a fingerpicking sound before percussion and an atmospheric acousitic sound coasts through the chorus. Through the second verse, KJ's speak singing draws out tone the hurt in the lyrical reflections. "What it Takes 2 Let U Go" will immerse you in its emotional sound with a catchy chorus, deliberate instrumentals, and expressive vocals.
