Review: "Your Ghost" - Talitha Boyd

Talitha Boyd Your Ghost Cover Art

In a raw new single, Talitha Boyd expresses the horrible feeling of watching a loved one fade away from your life. “Your Ghost” completely lives up to its title, and the pain in Boyd’s voice and lyrics is haunting. She so clearly depicts the feeling of knowing they are not right for you, of giving the relationship a million tries, and the fact that regardless they still leave. Whether you listen to this song and connect it to a friend, a family member, or a romantic connection, the feelings elicited from this track are the same: feelings of despair, wistfulness, and complete and utter sadness. Other than the bridge, the soundscape is slow and quiet, and leads the listener to focus on Boyd’s lyrics and voice.

The delicate fingerpicking and haunting, whisper-quality of Boyd’s voice tie into the ghostly themes connected to this relationship, and the lyrics throughout drive home this message. The chorus references the title, and she sings, “I made friends with your ghost”, acknowledging that all she wants is him in her life in some capacity, even if it is just his ghost. The rest of the song is simplistic and melancholic, but she grows in anger that is reflected in the soundscape as we reach the bridge. She sings the lyrics, “I thought that it would work / I thought that we could be / Different than the others / I tried to make you see”. She sings this part of the song with an almost snarky quality, kicking herself for ever thinking that they could be anything but a disaster.

Talitha Boyd found her voice at age 9, when she picked up a guitar. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, she released her debut EP in November 2023. The EP, titled Is This The Ending?, is raw and emotive, and started off her discography with a heartfelt piece of work. Her genre blends folk, indie, and pop, and serves as a melting pot for stories about love and life. She is an independent singer-songwriter, and stands out through her distinctive vocal tonality and extremely vulnerable musical content.
