- Review: "People Leave" - Lauren Presley
Step onto an emotional rollercoaster of abandonment issues and introspection in Lauren Presley's introspective song, "People Leave". The lyrics draw you into the speakers emotional struggles with its immediate dive into their personal struggles, saying "wish it was easy to trust". Incapable of depending on another person, the speaker's lyrics are remorseful of the way she isolates herself, allowing listeners to understand the deep internal conflict felt throughout the song. Letting people know that they are not alone in their habits of pushing people away, this heart-wrenching track is beautifully raw. Electronic instrumentals and Lauren's hypnotic, deep vocals bring an entrancing atmosphere to this song. Dark synth chords, soft percussion, and a repeating note pattern offer an ethereal gloom to the verse that reflect the heavy nature of the lyrics. Lauren's singing through the verse is intense and grounded in the meaning of the lyrics with expressive power. Strong vocals climb higher in the pre-chorus and intensely project through the chorus, accompanied by cinematically percussive elements and haunting electric guitar instrumentals. - Review: "Joanna" - Rosie Darling
Rosie Darling gives us a wholesome and heartfelt song that celebrates and reflects a close relationship she had with a friend. In this piece, we get to experience the memories the two friends made together. We feel every ounce of gratitude and love that the artist has for the person whom they are talking about. Some of the lyrics make the artist's feelings about the situation evident. We see this in the lyrics, "Feels good to know / No matter where we come and go / There's never any lost time." This line allows us to see how seamless the relationship is. There's never an awkward moment, but only moments that deserve to be cherished. Not only do we gain an understanding of the strong relationship that has been formed between the two friends, but we also come to understand the feeling of missing that friend once they have both started lives of their own. One of the strongest lyrics of the song says, "If I could go back, / I would tell myself to slow down / We didn't know that we'd be missing back then, right now." I think this line speaks volumes about the emotion and depth of the song, allowing us to feel the sincerity of the artist. "Joanna" presents us with a mixture of emotions and moods. As the listener, we feel and relate to the sense of longing for someone. We know how it feels to reflect on good relationships, and this sense of reflection is the overall mood of the piece. We get a beautiful blend of instruments throughout the song that work together perfectly to craft a cohesive and well-paced piece. The guitar and drums help give the piece a slight country feel, which makes the song feel even more like home. The lyrics add depth and emotion, further enhancing the overall purpose of the song. They help create a distinct connection with us, the listeners. This allows us to sit with the lyrics and process the artist's emotions. Rosie Darling is a Boston-born, LA-based pop singer-songwriter. She is known for her flowing melodies and her deeply relatable lyrics. The song draws influence from artists like Kacey Musgraves, as Rosie Darling belts out the fondness she has for this friendship. Rosie Darling has said that her musical inspirations include Gracie Abrams, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift. Regarding the song, she said, "It is a not-so-subtle shoutout to my best friend from high school, Joanna, who has always been there for me despite living 3,000 miles away from each other! I don't take my friendships for granted, and when I look back I am so grateful to have found a lifelong friend during those core teenage years when we were finding our way, growing into the people we are today. Years later, it's nice to pick up the phone and talk to someone who knows every version of you through all of your phases." If you're looking for a heartfelt song to show your best friend some appreciation, I recommend Rosie Darling. - Review: "Crush" - Tapwaterlucy
"Crush" is the newest single by Tapwaterlucy , a song about longing to be with the person you have a crush on, but still being too nervous about starting a relationship. Tapwaterlucy wants to see how far she can talk and flirt with her crush before she starts to fully enter a romantic territory, singing the line "I poke the bear then run". Her feelings for this person are so strong that she is constantly trying to get their attention and wants to relive the moment they met so she could have pursued the relationship then, but since she didn't, she feels as though she now has to wait to see if this person is into her as well. Influenced by a combination of electronic music and a metal guitar, a powerful and insane synth shoots out the melody of "Crush" like the beam from a laser gun. It is distinctive and stands out against the song's beat, which is akin to a pop/dance song from the early 2000s, similarly to the song's cover art. There was significant attention to detail in the production of this song, including when Tapwaterlucy sings "Bang on your chest like a man" and a bass drum is repeated multiple times to add emphasis to the line and the fast-paced hi-hats that contribute to upbeat vibe of the song. Tapwaterlucy is also a very talented singer, providing harmonies with her wide vocal range. Tapwaterlucy is a singer-songwriter and producer based in London, England. She discovered a passion for music at a young age and began releasing songs on SoundCloud, and was the sole songwriter and producer for them. She has been named in multiple publications, including EARMILK , and was interviewed by GroupieMagazine . For the promotion of "Crush", she made Instagram posts of her as a "controversial" early 2000s popstar in the format and aesthetic of magazine covers. She has released other amazing songs in addition to "Crush", such as "Loveblind", "Speed Dial", and "The Final Girl". Tapwaterlucy is an amazing and incredibly talented and creative music artist! - EP Review: "ah-dawn" - adan diaz
Artwork - Kieran Shaw ; Photo - Athena Merry Chicago, Illinois based 20-year-old Mexican/American singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer, adan diaz has recently dropped his 3rd EP, "ah-dawn", cheekily self-titled but spelled to help pronounce his name correctly after a lifetime of being called the wrong name. TRACKLIST shake, shake jsyk jerk x2 the middle why can't it be me run it all back young picasso adan diaz burst into the music scene at only 16 years old back in 2020. During the pandemic, he found himself confined to his bedroom in which he began writing and recording new music every single day on Ableton Live . He was still in high school when he was signed to the LA-based record label, GODMODE and released his first ever single, "ripped jeans". In 2021, he released his breakthrough single "legroom", which currently has over 30 million streams across all platforms. He quicky has become a local favorite in Chicago and beyond, now having over 330k+ monthly listeners on Spotify alone. He's opened for touring acts like LAUNDRY DAY , spill tab , Blu DeTiger , Victor Internet , JAWNY and more. He's got 4 years of experience and now 3 EP releases under his belt. Just this year, he made his festival debut at Lollapalooza , having the opportunity to perform twice - closing out the BMI Stage the first night, and then the next day, opening for the Eyedress’ after show at Bottom Lounge . adan has since signed a publishing collaboration with songwriter/producer Dan Wilson 's Supermoon Songs & PULSE Music Group , in which the "ah-dawn" EP is the first project to come to fruition with this venture. There's something highly unique and special about adan and his talents, which we will dive deeper into as we listen to these tracks. Let's get started. shake, shake We kick off the EP with the indie rock bop, "shake, shake". This song is about not being ready to jump into a serious relationship with someone, but you keep catching yourself getting too close. The feelings are too much right now; so every time you notice things are moving to fast, you have to shake them off. Sometimes taking a deep breath, and letting go is what we need in the moment to just reset our mind and get back on track. "shake, shake" is so simply catchy. It has a drums, bass, synth and two electric guitars; one for the rhythm and one to take the lead. The tone of the guitars have a bit of a raw, garage rock vibe which I love, and when you mix it with a little pop production, it gives the song a perfect radio sound. Not to mention adan's conversational vocal tone that draws you into the story as well. jsyk Next we have "jsyk", a short, fun and quirky song with brutally honest lyrics about adan's stance on dating and relationships. He doesn't really take a liking to getting into serious romantic relationships, but sometimes feels pressured by others to go on dates anyway. This song is to tell the world exactly how he feels about this situation, in both a fun-loving and direct, conspicuous way. This song was his first step into more of an indie rock style, taking more of a post-punk approach in this track with influence from artists like Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem . "jsyk" has a super groovy instrumentation with a funky guitar riff and unique percussion. It even has a surprising energetic hip-hop break down towards the end that really adds the perfect touch. I highly suggest watching the visualizer below, too. I bet you'll get a kick out of it. jerk x2 "jerk x2" is a relatable song about how you don't want to come off as jerk to people, but sometimes you just have to. We live in a society where if you don't have something nice to say, you're not supposed to say anything at all; but the problem with that is, sometimes the truth isn't something nice, but it's something that needs to be said. So if you're that person that likes to live with brutal honesty rather than society's zipped lipped code, you're kind of out numbered. So in other words, when you don't conform to that way of living and push on with your true self, that makes you the "jerk x2". adan sings of how he wishes he could be like those other people, but he just can't, and never will be. He rather speak his mind, and if that makes him a jerk, then so be it. "jerk x2" has an addicting light guitar riff in the verses that draw you in, with a heavier distorted chorus with electric guitar down strums, giving the song a punk rock feel for the hook. the middle "the middle" is a super fun, mid-tempo breakup song, about how the impact of the relationship ending was surprisingly a little bit more painful than expected. The relationship didn't end by surprise. Things clearly weren't working out, and emotions weren't running high, but despite all of that, you still find yourself feeling a little bit of that post-breakup stinging in your chest. "the middle" isn't meant to be a sad song, but more of a "yeah, this kind of sucks but... oh well" kind of song. It's meant for you to jam to, and get those negative feelings out of your body. It's got a super funky groove with a popping bass, and quirky vocalizations and rhythms that really solidify the catchiness of the song. There's a little bit of hip-hop in adan's vocal style here. The melody feels more spoken at times rather than sung, which adds to the emotional tone. why can't it be me "why can't it be me" is about knowing you're perfect for someone that possibly knows it too, but they can't admit it to themselves. They keep searching for something else out there, running from what is good for them, which is you. adan sings, "why can’t it be me, if i'm the only one who knows exactly what you need". He goes on to say, "stop searching for that adrenaline high, can’t be running for the rest of your life". "why can't it be me" starts with gorgeous piano and continues to build into this stunningly nostalgic soundscape with drums, acoustic guitar, bass and some little moments of synth. It has such a classic and raw indie pop sound with 60's soft rock influence, perfect for a melancholic romance song. run it all back "run it all back" is an electro-pop/rock song about when your relationship is on the rocks... and it's driving you absolutely nuts. You're suspicious that things might already be over, and they just haven't told you yet. They might even be seeing someone else already; after all, they're ignoring all of your calls and still posting on their Instagram Story like nothing is wrong. At this point you just wish you could take back everything that happened to get you to this point, because you don't want to lose them. "run it all back" starts with an acoustic picking pattern, but picks up into this super fun and catchy mixture of rock instrumentation and electro-pop production. adan sings a melody that is 1,000% going to get stuck in your head for days, so fair warning on this one. young picasso We close out the EP with the focus track, "young picasso", a stunning shift away from the modern indie rock sound and into a beautiful piano ballad with classic tones. This track is meant to showcase adan's evergrowing and evolving sound and maturity, both personally and musically. "young piscasso" sings of falling in love in a way that feels brand new. This person is so perfectly special, that you couldn't possibly have the heart to hate them if they ever left you, because at least you had the honor of loving them while you had the chance. This song is one of adan's most lyrically complex, poetic, and vulnerable. The instrumentation consists of piano, light drums, and orchestral strings. adan sings so soft and gentle, with moments of falsetto and lovely harmonies to back him up as well. I have to say, the orchestral instrumental outro was so incredibly beautiful, it just about brought me to tears. adan diaz is making a impressively huge imprint in the indie music scene right now. His writing and his sound are unique and it connects with people on a level that you don't see very often anymore. It's a new generation of real, emotionally impactful music that is needed. adan seems to think that this EP is his artistic prime, but let me remind him that he is only 20-years-old right now. Yes, he is absolutely, out of this world talented, and this EP proves it, but there are so many years of music ahead. This EP is still only the beginning of what is to come for adan diaz. The fact that he is already making waves this big, means it's only going to go up from here. He's already found new ways to develop and mature his sound, and that will only continue to grow along with him as the years go on. I can't wait to hear what's next. - Concert Review: Taylor Swift - The Eras Tour in Toronto
The Era’s Tour is the most magical, sentimental, and community-oriented place on earth. It’s a place where all Swifties, new and old, come together where we all share one common interest: the one and only Taylor Swift. Taylor has had a long and successful career that has spanned over eighteen years long. Luckily for those in attendance, we’re brought on her musical journey following her different career eras. The Eras Tour is her sixth concert tour and has been going on for two years now. This tour is going to go down in history as one of the most successful, groundbreaking, iconic, as well as the most impossible to get tickets to. You have to fight "The Great War" to get tickets, quite literally, but thank gosh there’s a Taylor song for that. I’m lucky enough to have been to the tour twice. The first time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It was still during the earlier stages of the tour. “Nothing New” was on the setlist, and “The Tortured Poets Department” didn’t even exist in our wildest dreams. Surprise songs are iconic so mine that day were “Holy Ground” and “False God”. As a “Getaway Car” super fan my heart did hurt after she sang it the night before my show, but now every time I listen to my surprise songs I am transported back to that day. Anyways, as a student at Syracuse University, once the Toronto tour dates were announced I knew it was close enough to make a trip happen, but let’s be honest I’d do anything for Taylor Swift. For both tour dates I couldn’t even win the fight for tickets, but luckily my friends did. I am so beyond grateful I even had the opportunity to go once, let alone twice. The drive to Toronto was one I’ll never forget. Cars filling up the highway with Taylor themed decorations and quotes, windows rolled down blasting her music, and border patrol not even being surprised that we were another group to make the journey to see this amazing show. I just kept saying “today’s the day!” over and over again because I couldn’t believe I’d be seeing my favorite artist put on what I consider the greatest show of all time. All the countless nights spent watching grainy live streams of the show would finally be coming to an end. The whole city of Toronto looked like one big Taylor Swift ad, and I’m not complaining. It was amazing to see the impact Taylor has on the world, not just the Swifties. It felt like one big community coming together to celebrate the joy we all have listening to Taylor. The Eras Tour is not just a concert. Its impact on fans has been something I’ve never seen before. It’s hard to pick a favorite album, or even a concept to dress up as for the concert, but as a huge “Reputation” fan, I knew I had to dress up as that era again. I love the creativity that comes from the costumes and accessories Swifties wear, it makes everything so much more fun. As I entered the Rogers Center my whole body was tingling, the butterflies in my stomach were flipping, and I couldn’t even process that I was about to see Taylor Swift perform on stage for a glorious three-hour long set. My friends and I did not have enough time to make our own friendship bracelets, but of course I left the stadium with a full stack on both arms. The friendship bracelet trading is just another sign of how much of a strong community we are as a fanbase, as well as proving how hilarious some members are because these bracelets can get out of hand (in the best way possible). Before I knew it the crowd was cheering and Gracie Abrams was walking on stage. This was my second time seeing her, the first being when she opened the other Eras night I attended. This time, I was an even bigger Gracie fan than before, so I immediately stood up and started screaming with the crowd. This time around, I felt more of the crowd knew her songs and lyrics which made me so happy to see. I genuinely thought I was going to lose my voice after I sang along to “Free Now” with Gracie. Little time went by before the infamous clock was projected on the stage. The pre-show playlist was starting to dwindle down and as soon as “Applause” by Lady Gaga started playing you could already hear screams. That’s how we all knew the show was about to start. Taylor makes a three hour show feel like three minutes. It is insanely impressive how she is able to give the performance of a lifetime for each era and captivate the audience with stunning visuals, sets, and stellar choreographed dance routines. There was a lot of screaming, singing, and tears on my behalf, but before I knew it I was about to experience “The Tortured Poets Department” set for the first time. You don’t know how much I needed to hear “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” live. It was truly life changing. Seriously. I mean, who hurt us all? You can hear every single person scream the lyrics at the top of their lungs and what a healing moment that was for us all. I was so lucky that now for this surprise song section she started doing mashups. Taylor came out and by the way she was talking I had a gut feeling Gracie was going to come back out, and she DID! They sang their Grammy nominated duet “us.” and mashed it with “Out Of The Woods” on the acoustic guitar. Then when Taylor sat down at the piano and started playing “You’re On Your Own Kid” I was crying. Some people complain that she sings that song too much, but I couldn’t be more thrilled. I really resonate with that song for many reasons. As a big Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks fan, Stevie has dedicated that song to her former bandmate Christine McVie. That was mashed with “Long Story Short”. I got to hear the lyrics “You’re on your own, kid, you can face this. So long story short I survived”. Are we kidding? Genius. The “Midnights” set is bittersweet. It is an amazing album and one of my favorites, but it’s also a signal that the show is almost over. I would insert videos that I took throughout the show, but instead of hearing Taylor’s beautiful voice, you’ll hear my unfortunate singing. Regardless, if you aren't as big of a Swiftie as I am, you can’t argue with the fact that Taylor is a captivating performer and one of the best to ever do it. She has changed the music industry; in fact, she IS the music industry. I was so overwhelmed with emotions that at some points I just had to stand with my jaw open in awe of her artistry. As someone who wants to work in the music industry, I kept thinking of how much work goes into a production like this and how impressive every member of her team is. The Eras Tour will go down in history and its impact will be studied for years to come. I wish I could be at The Eras Tour every day, but luckily there’s a film available for streaming (that I watch quite frequently). There's a reason why so many people want to attend this show. I will never forget the memories I made at The Eras Tour in Toronto. Written By Alexa LaMalfa Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Spotify | TikTok | YouTube *copyright not intended. - Review: "Last December" - Cassie Ann
Nothing hurts worse than that moment the rose colored glasses shatter, and you realize the person you thought you'd spend the rest of your life with isn't who you thought they were. It's like a knife straight to the heart, and you feel like a fool for getting played, but it's time to dust off your shoulders, take a deep breath and move on. "Last December" by Cassie Ann is about finally seeing the person you've been with for who they really are, and the facade they've been putting on. Come to find, this relationship was completely built on lies by a broken person who was just using you to play their game. "Last December" is a gorgeously sad electro-pop bop. This song is filled to the brim with detailed production work. A variety of synths and piano take the forefront of the instrumentation, creating this stunning, almost whimsical soundscape. The rhythm and beat has a nostalgic groove, with a little bit of an old-school hip-hop vibe. There's even what sounds like raindrops in the background, which really adds to the ambience and mood of the song. The vocals have layers of synthesized harmonies which I thought was the perfect touch, giving "Last December" an even bigger sense of catharsis when you hear the etherealism of this production technique. Cassie Ann grew up near Munich, Germany where she gained a love for music at a very young age. She took lessons for singing, piano and flute and perform in the local area. At the age of 18, she moved to Berlin to further her studies in music. She then went on to live in places such as Los Angeles, Vancouver and Costa Rica, working with different artists, producers, DJs, and songwriters all around the world to help expand and diversify her sound. She even took some courses in Boston at the very well-known Berklee College of Music . Cassie Ann's sound uniquely blends a dance-pop production with meaningful lyricism. Some of her biggest influences are Tate McRae , Ariana Grande , Dua Lipa and Camila Cabello . "Last December" is only her second single release, her first being "Possibilities" which just debuted earlier this year. This is only the beginning for Cassie Ann, so make sure to follow her below to see what's to come! Written By Kaitlyn Nicole FOLLOW CASSIE ANN: Instagram | Spotify
- Review: "Harsh Reality" - Moniah
London-based singer-songwriter Moniah is back with her latest single, "Harsh Reality." "Harsh Reality" is a mellow contemporary piece of R&B. Sonically, the track is smooth and buttery, seeping with lush instrumentation and gorgeous strings. Lyrically, the song is an honest look at our relationship to the past. It is a melancholy ballad about longing over relationships now far gone as a way to distract from present life. It is a universal sentiment penned and performed dazzlingly by Moniah. "Harsh Reality" is a song that is beautiful aesthetically and even more beautiful lyrically. "Harsh Reality" captures the feelings of going through past photos with someone no longer in your life. Lines like "Don't you just hate, when the memories we create, the pictures, go to waste?" capture the brief joy and subsequent disappointment of reliving the past. Moniah states that this is one of her most honest songs; "Harsh Reality is an open wound--like you're listening to a page straight from my diary," which comes through evidently. The song is a story of heartbreak and wishfulness relatable to virtually everyone. And Moniah's performance only adds to its emotional resonance. Her passionate belting, accompanied by the rich instrumentation, makes for a dynamic quality. "Harsh Reality" is a song impossible not to feel moved by. As an artist, Moniah's work focuses on honest lyricism and genre variation. Though she was a songwriter since she was a child, Moniah honed in on her skills in 2017 when she enlisted in writing boot camps in Kent. Since then, she has been working on her discography, with her first official release debuting in 2021. Moniah currently has six singles out, all of which have been played on radio stations from the BBC 6 to Croydon FM. On Spotify, Moniah holds over 10,000 streams and 3600 monthly listeners. Her previous single, "Sweet Escape," saw particular acclaim, garnering features from publications like Get In Her Ear, among others. Moniah is planning on releasing her debut EP in spring of 2025, and in the meantime you can listen to her music, including, "Harsh Reality" on all major streaming services now. - Review: "idk2" - Gina Livia
An empowering message of self-respect, even in the midst of an uncertain relationship, Gina Livia's song "idk2" will inspire you with its poetic honesty and healthy approach to love. The lyrics work through the nuances of a connection, acknowledging the intensity the speaker feels when they are with a certain someone while recognizing the truth, that "if you wanted to be with me, you'd be". Telling listeners not to remain an option for someone who does not prioritize your relationship over the possibility of another, this song encourages strength and perseverance even when you're still in love. Captivatingly grappling with romance and peace, this song will motivate listeners to say goodbye to those they love who cannot give them the relationship they deserve. This track carries a genuine sound of romantic mourning and moving on. Strings and piano work through this song with a powerful and somber simplicity, and instrumentals build progressively throughout the track as through the resolution in its message takes hold over the sound. Gina's soulful vocals are strong and expressive, moving through depths and emotive highs that hit the ear in a profoundly touching way. Determination and pain blend through the sound of the chorus as piano compliments the power of the lyrics. Percussion joins in the second verse, empowering the track with a sense of strength. This emotional pop song will strike you with its beauty, depth, and power. Gina Livia is a German artist who has been practicing music since the age of 5.
