- Review: "Scars" - Kristen Anzelc
Our experiences are what make us who we are, but they can sometimes leave us wounded. Kristen Anzelc's song "Scars" follows a speaker hoping to hide the emotional damage done to her in a previous relationship from her current partner. The lyrics "I don't want you to see it, but it's part of my history" are very emotionally loaded, trying to keep her new romance from knowing about the struggles she has been through. Taking control over her self image while holding a part of her identity back, the meaning of this intense track truly feels like someone trying to do what is best for them. Some people can't truly be close to someone without sharing their experiences, while others don't want to be defined by them. In an open expression of fear that her past will impact her present, the chorus puts force and emotion behind the words it repeats: "I hope you don't see my scars." This impactful song lets listeners know that they hold the power over what people know about them, and that fear is a part of the healing journey. This immersive alt-pop track boldly grapples with fear and control through its multi-faceted sound. Ambient instrumentals support Kristen's deep and entrancing vocals through the verse, creating a narrative sound through her singing. Taking on the way the past seems ever-present in this song, a deep vocal echo joins the prechorus through lyrics of hesitance and fear. Hammering percussion and a spookily resonant combination of keys and guitar join Kristen's voice belting through the chorus, with emotion pushing through the incredible high notes. Giving a sound of force to vulnerability, "Scars" is a track that will make you feel along with the song. Kristen Anzelc is a Canadian artist whose singing and songwriting skills create touching music that will carry you through themes of love and personal growth. - Review: "Someone Else" - GT_Ofice
GT_Ofice’s brand new bittersweet single entitled “Someone Else” brings dancefloor energy with a touch of emotion. At first glance this EDM track is a joyful party song with a catchy chorus, however its lyrics carry themes of loneliness and heartbreak. The all encompassing lyric and chorus of the song reads, “I’ve run out of ideas, I forgot how it feels to be someone/ But you’re someone to someone else.” Here, GT_Ofice gets vulnerable about the emptiness which came after a previous relationship found new love. Seeing someone you were once in love with find their match can be a discouraging feeling, and “Someone Else” will be relatable to anyone who feels like an outsider among other couples, or even their friends. Now that we know what it’s about, let’s get into how it sounds! This bass-driven dance hit showcases a classic EDM beat introduction which slowly builds until the main drop after its chorus. Overall, the production (some of which completed by GT_Ofice himself) is clean and polished. “Someone Else” has a relaxed tone and slower tempo. The beat is steady and dark, it contrasts nicely with its accompanying bright, euphoric vocals. This more melodic take on EDM is better suited for the reflective nature of the lyrics and themes. In its entirety, “Someone Else” is an impressive piece of music and definitely worth taking a listen to. With an impressive 20 million streams and 83,000 monthly Spotify listeners, GT_Ofice is making waves as an Electronic Dance Music artist with the support of some of its giants, Timmy Trumpet and R3HAB . Since the inception of his career in 2019, GT_Ofice’s momentum has been more than steadily increasing. Naturally, this new single is expected to receive the same buzz and radio play as his other previous EDM hits. Additionally, his recent singles “Feels Like Us” with Alwz Snny and “Tuff” with VASSY have both charted on major platforms. - Recession Pop - Why We Turn to Upbeat Pop in Times of Trouble
As we look back on the previous year in music, all eyes are on pop. Charli XCX and Chappell Roan ruled the summer 2024 airwaves, as their dance pop tracks took over the charts and the public’s mind. Upbeat, dance pop tracks have exponentially grown in popularity over the last few years, reminiscent of the Lady-Gaga-Katy-Perry-Ke$ha (to name a few) pop era. However, these eras aren’t similar just because of their sound and danceability. Surprisingly enough, in times of dance music prosperity, the economy is in a state of misfortune. Although the term “recession pop” was coined during the Great Recession in the late 2000s, this phenomenon of spectacular dance music popularity dates back to the Great Depression. So let’s take a look and see how people have been dancing through the pain for the last 100 years. Picture from The Arbiter " Outrageous loans and Chappell Roan: Recession pop is back " by Ella Van Leuven To take it back to the Great Depression, we need to take another step back to the 1920s. As you may have heard, the 20s in America were roaring. America, in the wake of World War 1, cemented itself as a powerful player in international affairs. The United States went through a second industrial revolution (mainly the electrification of industry and American homes), completely transforming what American life looked like. Simultaneously, a cultural revolution was occurring, as the “New Woman” emerged with voting rights, more economic and personal independence, more job opportunities, and maybe even a flapper dress cut at the knee. All in all, from a 1920s perspective, life in America had never been better. But as you know, this period of prosperity was abruptly ended by the Great Depression, the worst financial crisis in recent history. Americans were left in a state of economic turmoil, many without jobs and unable to provide for themselves and their families. Yet, the people still wanted to dance. Jazz became hugely popular in the 1930s, as swinging eighth notes and walking bass lines, which were perfect for dancing, took over the music scene. These upbeat and light-hearted tracks were cathartic to listen to, and provided a necessary outlet for suffering Americans. However, the United States placed a high tax on dancing nightclubs during World War II, leading to the creation of the infamous “No Dancing Allowed” signs. This only enticed Americans more, and as radio became more accessible to the average person, dance took over the American household. During this crucial time in US history, the iconic dances like the “jitterbug” and the “Lindy Hop” enlightened Americans at home and abroad fighting in the war. Picture from NPR article " Fred And Ginger Cheered Us Up During The Depression. Might They Do It Again? " by Bob Mondello Flash forward to the 1970s, you’ve got disco - big hair and flare pants combined with heavy synthesizers and drum beats created an era we truly cannot forget. Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Gloria Gaynor, and so many more legends were born in this era, and it would seem like this would be a time for true bliss. But, if we look at the US economy in the 1970s, you would see an era of “stagflation”: an economic stagnation along with high inflation rates. Through military expenses from the Vietnam War, the US was faced with increasing federal budget deficits. Simultaneously, the US was seeing its highest unemployment rate in two decades. And to put the cherry on top, the OEPAC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) oil embargo threw an ax into the US governments’ reliance on foreign oil. This caused extreme price hikes for the barrel and at the pump, high inflation, and rough international relations. Yet, the disco ball kept spinning and everyone kept on dancing. Picture from Vogue article " These $35 Pants Make Me Feel Like I’m in Saturday Night Fever " by Christian Allaire Now let’s talk about the era that the term “recession pop” was created in. If you’re reading this, you probably lived through the Great Recession of 2008. Simultaneously, the GDP in the US fell by 4.3% and house prices doubled from 1998 to 2006. These factors, among many others, led to a broader economic downturn. Yet, we saw a peak in pop music, with artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kesha, and came out swinging with their wildly addictive dance pop tracks. With themes of using parties, alcohol, drugs, and other potentially harmful coping mechanisms, they tried to distract themselves from the troubles that our country was plagued with at the time. Picture from Vogue article " Best 2000s Era Dance Songs for Weddings & Events " Let’s take a look at the data. I have circled the peaks and valleys on each graph in corresponding colors. Although the peaks and valleys in each graph don’t always align with each other perfectly, there is certainly a close year gap between each of them. The peak in the red circle is around the late 1950s, the valley in the orange circle is the late 1960s and early 1970s, the yellow circle is the early to mid 1970s, the light blue circle is the early 1980s, the dark blue circle is the early 1990s, the purple circle is the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the dark purple circle is the late 2000s. The unemployment graph also indicates when the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) declared a recession with the shaded gray regions. Graph created by the National Bureau of Economic Research Graph created by Sean Miller It is important to note that the US was not in a recession in the summer of 2024. Despite high inflation rates and high interest rates, the stock market is performing well and unemployment has remained below 5% (which is generally used as an indicator of a recession). However, Americans, especially younger Americans, are feeling the heat when it comes to finances. This resurgence in recession pop, as well as all the other peaks in the past, reflects the struggles, fears, and distrust that young people have in the economy and their wealth. But despite this, we can put these fears away from time to time, put our headphones on, and dance the night away. - Review: "Red Moon in Retrograde" - Red Moon
This song, “Red Moon in Retrograde” by Red Moon, is a hypnotic, alternative song all about the cycles we go through as people and how easy it is to blame those cycles on some cosmic force out of our control. It’s human nature to find something else to point the finger at, when maybe we should be pointing the finger at ourselves. And that’s okay. It’s okay to mess up, it’s okay to turn right back to something you said you’d leave behind. Maybe that’s a relationship you’re trying to get over, or a bad habit you’re trying to break, or whatever else may be weighing you down. As long as you recognize it and keep going, those cycles are just a part of life. “Red Moon in Retrograde” is a dreamy, experimental song that uses a combination of moody soundscapes, electronic beats, and delicate vocals to create a track that perfectly balances the instrumental with the message Red Moon is trying to share. Starting out with a smooth and mesmerizing melody, you’re drawn into the song slowly, already hooked when the vocals of the first verse start. The chorus leans more into the percussion, adding to the tension built by the consistent and drawn out background. This back and forth of softer verse with heavy-hitting chorus lasts for most of the track, until it drops off in the last fort-five seconds, leaning more into the dreaminess of the beginning. Overall, this song has an enchanting rise and fall from beginning to end, and is an entire cinematic soundscape wrapped up in three and a half minutes. Red Moon is an experimental pop artist originally from Norway, now based in both Oslo and Berlin. Self-described as a love child of Stevie Nicks and David Bowie but raised by witches, she’s mastered the art of combining and mixing different genres, testing out new sounds and making her own mark on the music industry. Drawing inspiration from mythology and history, she writes about vulnerable emotions and dramatic tales, creating worlds within her songs. Her first single, “Slow Down,” was released in 2020, followed by a series of more singles throughout 2020 and 2021. After a few years off, she returned in 2024 with “I Run.” “Red Moon in Retrograde” marks her latest release. Use the links below to explore more of her music! - Review: "Traffic" - Ro Jordan
"Traffic" by Ro Jordan tells a complex and heart-wrenching story of wanting to support someone you care about. The lyrics in this song describe a woman's experience from the perspective of someone who understands how she feels. The world can be a terrifying and overstimulating place, from loud noises to internal pressures. The speaker gives a warm and genuine offer throughout the lyrics, saying "confide in me, I promise you I'll understand." From grounding techniques to leaving an uncomfortable situation, this track is a great reminder for listeners to do what is best for them when they aren't feeling well. Listening to this song, I felt so much comfort from the meaningful way the words tell you things are going to be okay. It teaches you to accept help when it's offered to you, and will warm your heart with feelings of connection. The emotional intensity of this reassuring folk pop track is emboldened by the different musical elements of this song. - Review: "Fall At Your Feet" - CYRIL x Dean Lewis
The duo of world-famous producer CYRIL and his fellow Australian multi-platinum artist Dean Lewis have released their brand-new single “Fall at Your Feet", which is a reimagination of the 1991 song by rock band Crowded House . Let’s take a deep dive into a song which beautifully encapsulates both love and vulnerability. At its core, “Fall at your feet” is about the complexity of emotions when you’re falling in love. Many of the lyrics portray a powerful and deep-rooted romance. In particular, the pre-chorus’ “Let it go, I’ll be there when you call” and “Do you want my presence or need my help?” lyrics both emphasize the emotional intelligence hidden within the words of this song. This dance hit is about the deepening bond of two individuals falling in love . Although, not every lyric portrays sunshine and rainbows in this relationship, as the second verse also explores the strain miscommunication can have on an intimate relationship, “You’re hiding from me now / There’s something in the way that you’re talkin’.” Due to its timeless subjects and masterful lyricism, I believe this song showcases the artistry of both collaborators beautifully, and it will go on to resonate with lovers all over the globe. The major strengths of both artists are presented in the first ten seconds of this track. CYRIL and Dean Lewis’ brand new collaboration opens with a beautifully soft piano melody, followed by the impressive vocals of Lewis. The contrast between the song’s introspective lyrics and energized dance-pop beat adds a compelling layer to the track. “Fall at Your Feet '' is very danceable, and the perfect song to nod your head to in the car. Additionally, CYRIL’s production is crystal clear and amazingly smooth. From a musical experience perspective, this song feels like a summer sunset, and it is certainly one which you will want to add to your party playlist. Both hailing Australia, these two artists have seen their fair share of success. Sydney- native Dean Lewis has received platinum certifications for multiple singles (including his debut album!) and one could only describe the start of his journey towards stardom as a catapult. Within a few short months of his first releases Lewis was being recognized internationally and topping Australian music charts. He cites the English rock band, " Oasis " as a huge inspiration for his musical style today. As for "Fall at Your Feet" producer CYRIL, his discography is an impressive array of remixes to well-known songs. In the year 2021, he decided to take his DJ talents to Tiktok where just two short years later he found himself going immensely viral. A remix he created to the song "Stumblin' in," originally preformed by Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman reached huge audiences and his success has only skyrocketed from there. Combined, these collaborators boast over 40 million monthly Spotify listeners; and I think it's safe to say, they are quite the dynamic duo. With the games and detachment that come up in modern romance, dating can feel hopeless. Dezi Marie's song "Make Love, Love Again" will make you feel heard with its expression of exhaustion with the dating world, and an aspirational glimmer of hope. With trends of swiping through suitors, this track gives a voice to the romantics, asking questions like "where did the old school lovers go?" Fairytales and magic are interwoven throughout the desires of the speaker in the song, representing the hope for a happily ever after. Expressing frustrations with the lackadaisical attitude of so many in the dating world, the lyrics say, "they won't commit but always want a second chance." Set to generate excitement ahead of his highly anticipated debut album "Habits of a Complex Mind," releasing in February 2025, this energetic track captures the intricate balance of nostalgia and modern pop. - Review: "Just In Case" - Alix
“Just In Case” by Alix is a feel-good R&B pop track about longing for someone you took for granted and missing the moments you shared after the relationship ended. Intertwined in a mellow beat, Alix sings about only having what's left of the person's presence on 35 mm film. “35 millimeters on film / Is all I have of you / I hate that,” she writes. The mention of the camera film evokes nostalgia for happy moments captured and being the only reminder of what once was. Alix laments the relationship's end and looks back on where the problems could have stemmed from, believing “bad timing” could be a possible factor. “Was it never meant to be,” she sings, “Or was it just bad timing / Was there ever 'me and you?'” Despite its end, Alix still hopes for her partner to change their mind in hopes of rekindling the former flame they once had. The song is a fusion of mellow beats and smooth vocals overlapping over heartbroken lyrics of longing. Chill and fluid, “Just In Case” is catchy with an addictive rhythm and caressing tone. The soft vocals are accompanied by lowkey guitar notes and follow a simple pattern throughout the song. Soulful and modern dreamy pop sounds flow around the warm vocals. The song serves as a personal letter to the former lover, vocally inviting them to return home to remorseful arms. Alix's voice tenderly moves over each lyric, as she emphasizes just how much she misses her partner and blames herself for its end. The atmospheric melody adds to the bittersweet feeling the song emits. “Just In Case” envelopes its audience in a melancholic manner, reminiscing on old memories and hoping for love to return. - 10 Amazing Pop Albums for the Fall
Are you looking for something new to listen to before the holiday season hits? October might be over, but popular music isn't going anywhere this fall. November is a strange time. It's after Halloween, but not quite Christmas. If you don't quite feel right putting on the festive jams yet, there are still plenty of pop albums to explore. We've got a range of artists here who are topping charts and frequently releasing new music. You're bound to love one of them! Let's explore 10 amazing pop albums for the fall season. 10. Kylie Minogue - Tension II Worldwide superstar, Kylie Minogue has released her 17th studio album, Tension II . If you aren't familiar with Kylie, she's been recording dance-pop tracks since all the way back in 1988. You might know her from her most popular track of all time, "Can't Get You Out of My Head", which went platinum in multiple countries. If you were a fan of her last album, Tension, her new album, Tension II is a perfect sequel. Where Tension explored more emotional tunes, Tension II brings more traditional dance-pop tracks in Kylie's iconic 80s style. She also features several notable artists on the album, including Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo. I'll be honest, upon first glance, this album seems simple, but I promise you won't be able to put it down! 9. Hozier - Unreal Unearth Hozier's Unreal Unearth is a powerful emotional journey of self-discovery and reflection. It's more mellow than many of the albums on this list, but that doesn't discount its impact. Every time I write about this article I point out how popular its featured single, "Too Sweet" is, of course, but also how underrated the rest of the album is. The extended version, Unreal Unearth: Unaired features a full 23 tracks packed with insane instrumental talent and captivating lyrics. "Too Sweet" has been floating around the Billboard Top 20 for a while now, but it's currently sitting cozy at number 13 and there's a reason for that. I would just love to see more of the album on the radio. It's a gem hidden in plain sight. If you're a fan of Hozier's artistic, emotional style, definitely give this album a try. 8. Shaboozey - Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going Let's talk about our king, Shaboozey for a minute. This guy is making waves in the music industry right now. His country emulation of J-Kwon's 2004 hip-hop track, "Tipsy", aptly titled "Bar Song" was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 15 weeks straight. It was finally pushed aside this week in favor of Morgan Wallen's new hit (It's only number 2 now), but a 15-week streak is absolutely no easy feat. His full-length album, Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going is a phenomenal fusion of hip-hop, country, and mainstream pop music. Although this is only Shaboozey's 3rd album, his unique style sounds fresh compared to the typical pop tune. The album features 12 tracks spanning various emotions from confident to vulnerable. It's a fantastic ride and well worth your time. 7. Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft It is so easy to compliment Billie Eilish. She's an insanely talented artist with crafty approaches to both songwriting and production. So, of course, her latest album is still rising in popularity. Hit Me Hard and Soft is a compilation of songs about different people in Billie's life. Her current charting hit, "Birds of a Feather" is a beautiful, romantic piece speculated to be about her former boyfriend, Jesse Rutherford. The album follows its namesake, containing some songs that are light as a feather while others are confident and punchy. Fall is a season of reflection, and much like Hozier's album, this one offers that same retrospective feeling. It's a great album to pop on on your way to work, reading in the park, or just when you need to think. 6. Charli xcx - Brat and it's completely different but also still brat Okay, yes, Brat summer is over. It is November after all. However, Charli xcx surprised us with a complete overhaul of Brat , hilariously titled, Brat and it's completely different but also still Brat. And that title is completely accurate. The new album brings a featured artist onto every track of the original set, putting their own unique spin on each song. Charli brought some big names to the scene too. Ariana Grande, Troye Sivan, Tinashe, and Billie Eilish are just a few of the iconic line-up. While this album is technically Brat, it may as well be a completely new 17 songs. Some of the originals are morphed into completely different themes and moods. If you love Brat but haven't heard this yet, you NEED to give it a listen. 5. Zedd - Telos Back in the dance-pop category, we've got Zedd's undeservingly underrated new album, Telos . Sadly, we haven't heard much about this album since its release in August, but I think it's time to change that. In Zedd's typical fashion, he's brought on some big names like Bea Miller and John Mayer to lend their voices to incredibly heartfelt songs. Other tracks travel more down the EDM road, showcasing Zedd's production talent. Honestly, I'm not at all sure how this album has been so overlooked. It has some fantastic songs that would make excellent radio hits. Some folks speculate that since Zedd's style has changed slightly, his typical fanbase was a bit averted to the new sound. Regardless, now is your chance to give it the hype it deserves. If you like dance-pop, you're sure to love it. 4. Remi Wolf - Big Ideas Remi Wolf's 2024 album, Big Ideas is perfect for the fall season. It's got nostalgic vibes and tons of energy. It's the perfect pick-me-up if you're feeling the cold weather blues. Remi's voice is just so unique, and her bright aesthetic and style could light up a room. Songs like "Cinderella" and "Toro" make you want to get up and dance, but in a mellow way. Does that make sense? Big Ideas is a fantastic album to put on at the gym or while you're out walking your dog. It's real, it's honest, and it's brilliant. What more oculd you want? 3. Halsey - The Great Impersonator It is always a treat when Halsey releases a new album. The last time she released one was in 2022 with If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power. However, this new one, The Great Impersonator leads a completely different vibe. The album explores Halsey's journey and experience with fame. Fair warning, this one gets dark. However, sometimes that's the relatability we need from an artist. One notable song on this album is "Lucky", an emulation of Britney Spears' song of the same name. In the song, Halsey unleashes a new perspective on the song's protagonist, a celebrity struggling with her mental health. Honestly, this album is captivating and well worth a listen on a rainy day. 2. Coldplay - Moon Music Coldplay's new album, Moon Music can only be described as ethereal. It's extremely modern like the group has certainly moved on to a new era. However, it doesn't take away from all of the things we love about Coldplay. The emotional marks they leave on their music are scattered within this album's 10 songs. Songs like "Moon Music" bring an extremely somber vibe, while others are upbeat and uplifting. Compared to Coldplay's older albums, this one just seems to carry more emotion, if you can even believe that. It feels like the soundtrack of a dream. Give this work of art a chance. 1. Gwen Stefani - Bouquet Okay, so I'm placing this one at the bottom, but only because it hasn't been released yet. Gwen Stefani's new album, Bouquet is promising a lot from its 3 released singles. The album is remarkably different from her usual fare, taking on a more country sound. However, it's more reminiscent of 70s/80s pop. And that's part of the story. Her latest single released for the album, "Swallow My Tears" hits hard in a Stevie Nicks, "Landslide" kind of way. The other two songs released for the album, including a duet with her husband, Blake Shelton, promise a vulnerable, heartfelt experience. The tracks delve into Gwen's struggles with her past traumas and her journey moving forward. If the album is this good with only 3 songs, I can't wait to hear the whole thing. Bouquet is set to release on November 15th, but the three singles are available on streaming services right now. What are you waiting for?
