- Review: "The Call I Never Made" - Shivani
Following the powerful lead single, “You’re Not Coming,” Shivani followed up with her stunning sophomore ballad, “The Call I Never Made.” The new track is a whimsical journey through heartbreak, longing, and nostalgia. She takes the listener through her experience of missing that one person who once held the most special and sacred place in her heart. They once told her everything – their hopes and dreams, and how Shivani was weaved into their future. But now they don’t even talk, and the singer finds herself hoping for a phone call that will never come. Throughout the song, she expresses this unrelenting sorrow with powerful imagery that shows her strong emotions and skilled songwriting. Click here to listen to "The Call I Never Made" “The Call I Never Made” by Shivani is an ethereal indie-pop ballad that beautifully blends the sounds of modern Western indie-pop with classical runs and Indian instruments. The soft piano, airy synth waves, and Shivani’s stunning vocals work together to make a flawless track that tugs on the listener’s heartstrings and transports them into her emotional mindset. While the music is wonderfully produced, my favorite aspect of Shivani’s unique genre-blending was the two lines in the second verse where the artist sings in her native tongue. In Hindi, she sings: “Pal vo mujhe sataye jinme Tum ghar na aaye,” which translates to “Those moments torment me when you don’t come home.” Her switching from English to Hindi is a wonderful moment of vulnerability, shielding herself in the comfort of her homeland. Furthermore, it also exemplifies that Shivani has perfected her captivating mix of sounds and genres, proving herself to be one of the best new indie artists in the industry. Shivani Sen, also known as simply Shivani, is a multi-disciplinary artist, singer-songwriter, artist, and composer born and raised in New Delhi, India, now based in the UK. Her music is an effortless blend of genres, cultural identities, and emotions that makes her art uniquely hers. She aspires to break tradition-based boundaries and share her story in a way that is special to her. For twenty years, she has trained in Hindustani Classical music and currently focuses on vilambit khyal. She also studied piano at Trinity College London and has performed in New Delhi and London. Alongside her music, she is also a poet with her debut poetry book, To the Homes that We Are, sold internationally . Her poetry has been widely read at festivals and exhibitions, printed in magazines, and shared in universities in the UK. - Review: "Suburbia" - Emily James
Capturing the haunting feeling a first love leaves you with even years later is no easy feat, and yet Emily James’ latest song “Suburbia” does just this. The first and only released track on James’ upcoming six song project “Summer Nostalgia”, “Suburbia” sets the stage between the two past lovers, recounting the love they used to share when they were young and carefree. She details classic tales of teenage romance, sneaking out into midnights together, and buying cheap alcohol with fake IDs. She wonders if he remembers these things too, and thinks about them as much as she does. The soundscape is simplistic and really lends the listeners to focus on the picture being painted by James’ lyrics. In the intro and outro, there are harmonies layers and soaring vocals, but other than that there is little masking the James’ storyline. What makes this song so enticing and heartfelt is the real life examples that James litters throughout the lyrics. She sings wistfully about the time they swam in the warm river after drinking the aforementioned cheap alcohol, and milestones in their relationship so deep in their memories. In the second verse, she sings “Did they give away the leather couch? / The red one where we first made out?” It has been so long that her ex’s parents have moved out of the childhood house they spent so much time in, but the memories and landmarks remain in her head. In the chorus, she asks if he thinks about her as much as she does, explaining, “'Cause in my mind it's glorified / You and I, together, ohh / 'Cause in my mind we have more time / To dance with each other”. She feels as if their time was not up, and the end of the song slowly fades out with one last question she can’t help but ask “Does it have a hold on you?”. Emily James is a singer-songwriter born and raised in New York. She recently moved back there after spending time in Los Angeles and in London. She credits her return home and the nostalgia she endured as the inspiration behind “Summer Nostalgia”, as it highlights the feeling of returning to a place you once knew, and all of the emotions that come with this. The excitement of returning home, the flood back of amazing memories, but the heartbreak of all that has changed in the time you were away. James has a similar musical style to that of Maggie Rogers and Holly Humberstone, a light voice and calming soundscapes tied with heartfelt lyrics. - Review: "dust dog" - TEHYA
With Tehya’s new release “Dust Dog” (stylized as “dust dog”), the analogy of being like a dog shines with metaphors and references. Going through a breakup at the time of writing this song, Tehya writes about the “long leashes” in her relationship and how she can be found “by the door / waitin’ for [her partner].” It’s infuriating to Tehya, writing that “[her partner] has some nerve” and that they can go “find [their] own damn pot to piss in.” With the relationship stagnant and staying in the toxic cycle, Tehya is begging, needing a “sign that [she’s] moving forward.” The annoyance and impatience Tehya expresses throughout the song comes through and with it Tehya’s perspective of herself in this relationship falls perfectly into the analogy created. I wouldn’t have thought to compare a toxic relationship or someone’s role in a relationship to a dog, but through Tehya’s simple metaphors, I actually really enjoy it. The simple references about keeping guard and tight collars really shine and keep the song grounded in the analogy Tehya has, making it easy to follow for listeners and keep up without getting confused. Not only that, Tehya also doesn’t over explain it and lets the analogy tell itself. It’s simple and to-the-point, something that I really enjoyed. While the lyrics are the main point of the song, the instrumentals mesh well. With a simple beat and horns coming in throughout the chorus, the simplicity of the music doesn’t take away from the analogy and doesn’t overwhelm the listener. With the release of “Dust Dog,” Tehya has also released her new EP, “Sorry for the Wait.” With the EP being centered around her coming of age in the music industry, Tehya has found her footing. The 24-year-old songwriter hails from the Pacific Northwest, with inspiration from her music coming from her background as a Filipino-Native American and her father, a funk drummer. A self-taught instrumentalist and songwriter, Tehya’s work is uniquely her own. Having graced the cover of both NME magazine and Spotify’s “Fresh Finds” playlist, Tehya has gained a following of over 63,000 monthly listeners on Spotify as well as over 11,000 followers on Instagram. - Review: "Good with Goodbye (feat. Chloe Parché)" - PEPTALK
Cover art by: Phoebe Sinclair Leaving a relationship with a toxic partner is what makes up the lyrics in PEPTALK and Chloe Parché ’s “Good with Goodbye”. The person being referred to in the single is the exact opposite of an ideal romantic interest, therefore it is imperative that they are broken up with. The title and the main theme of the song takes on a different point of view with the phrase “good at goodbyes”, usually spoken in a negative light in wishing that letting go of people wasn’t so easy. However, in this instance, “Good with Goodbye” approaches the phrase differently, as it’s essential to get rid of this bad energy from your life in order to be happy. “Good with Goodbye” contains upbeat pop guitar-centric production and instrumentation. It also features distinctive sound effects; after the line “Stay out here in space // Consider alienating me a total success” is sung, futuristic and sci-if-esque sound effects can be heard. In the second verse, the production shifts temporarily into a new sound, adjacent to industrial pop with now different sci-fi sound effects. PEPTALK and Parché are amazing vocalists and there are amazing harmonies throughout the song. Overall, the single has a very fun and summery sound, and is reminiscent of alternative, alt-pop, and electronic subgenres. PEPTALK is a music group that hails from Australia, consisting of lead vocalist Phoebe Sinclair, bassist Lara Frew, and keyboardist Jay-Lee Kwan. The group released their first song “White Sneakers” in May 2022. They have released other amazing music as well, such as their debut EP Dumb Teen Heartache in 2023 and multiple collaborations in addition to “Good with Goodbye”. Chloe Parché is a music artist from Sydney, Australia, and is based in New South Wales. She began releasing music in March 2021 with her debut single “Moneymaker”. Since then, she’s released her 2023 debut EP Crooked and her two other EPs, Bad With Words and Split Ends . PEPTALK and Chloe Parché are incredible and very talented artists! - Review: "My Friends Don't Like You" - MNERVA
Getting your friends and significant other to find mutual respect can be difficult, especially when your friends seem to be against the flourishing relationship you share with your partner. Perhaps it’s simply because they believe you deserve better. However, at times, it could be out of pure jealousy. Jealousy that fogs up their senses, a nebulous cloud hindering their ability to truly discern your relationship. This sense of jealousy they contain taints what was once a friendship, creating something contentious and fabricated. It makes us realize that these people we had once considered friends were never truly looking out for us if they don’t care enough to recognize and commemorate the happiness of a love that's vehement. “My Friends Don’t Like You” by MNERVA is a song that touches common ground with a similar debacle. Our singer finds himself in a friend group where they don’t seem to share the likeness of his partner, which inspires the lyrics of this alternative-like song. “They hate how our spark turned into a flame”, “they wish they were happy too” are lyrics that indicate these friends are jealous of the relationship, and are merely too unhappy with themselves to reveal in their friend's newly found love. The song opens up in a way that sets a very clear stage, it reels the listeners in almost immediately, catching our attention as the drums and riffs of a guitar create the perfect blend of sound. It then meticulously decreases as the voice of our artist settles in, which creates an open opportunity for his voice to be the main instrument, the message of the lyrics getting across to us in a clear and perspicuous way. As the song unfolds, I can’t help but notice how beautifully our singer's voice pairs with the instruments, creating a song that allows us to not only reflect on the lyrics, but enjoy the song for what it is, which is simply just music. Those who like alternative pop would undoubtedly find interest in a song like My Friends Don’t Like You. Not only do the lyrics hold meaning, but it’s a song that can be played essentially anywhere. I find the lyrics to be admirable, despite the bitter feelings the friends feel against the relationship our singer has– he disregards their jealousy and doesn’t allow it to spoil the relationship he has with his partner. MNERVA, the artist behind this exceptionally crafted song, is a singer and songwriter based in Washington, D.C. He had moved to Nashville with a soaring dream to enter the music industry, wishing to make an impact on music and what it means to have a fervent passion for making music. After finding himself pelted by his incessant anxiety and self-doubt, he discovered the true meaning of transferring the depths of his emotions to his lyrics. Tying realism to them along with genuine emotion that can translate to those who also relate to such impactful words. Many of his fans took a fond liking to the authenticity of his lyrics, finding that they could share in vulnerability and embrace the sense of comfort that his music conveys. His songs take a profound step into the realities that a plethora of us face with our struggles, not only comforting us with a sense of reliability but with a sense of hope and optimism. As MNERVA continues to touch the heart of other listeners, I can’t wait to see what he has in store for his fans, MNERD’s, and the entire music industry! - Review: "Wolf" - Vanna Pacella
Have you ever loved someone so deeply that even in their darkest hour you find a way to overcome the hardship? It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of their ever-changing ways but somewhere along the way the unthinkable happens. We can tell ourselves a million times that we will not lose the person we are, but actions speak louder than words ever will. It’s hard to connect with someone on an intimate level when all you’ve ever experienced was disappointment, anger and fear. It becomes this cycle that is comfortable, and we see no point in veering away from that. But through Vanna Pacella’s newest track “Wolf” we hear these same experiences and understand that losing yourself is never the answer. From the start of the track, I could instantly feel how intense the emotion was. With the crisp, deep piano keys being played paired with her ethereal vocals. She carried her voice so passionately throughout and the way she elongated specific notes, really showed the meaningful depth. While it’s a heartfelt song in the beginning I found that when the melody shifted towards the middle it became a more serious upbeat tone. The entire song was extremely moving with lyrics like “When I built you into home” and “I miss my life, I mourn my soul.” Towards the end there was a guitar solo that was my personal favorite as it gave off this hauntingly raw feeling that perfectly ended the track. Vanna Pacella is an 18-year-old singer/songwriter from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Where she leads her band with help from Tom Davis a flawless guitarist and Nick Simpson who is a master on the drums. Pacella has been playing the piano since she was a little girl and continues to do so till this day. While she composes music, she also takes part in making amazing sounds with synthesizers, creating a unique sound for her band. She has taken part in many shows over the course of her musical career and plans to continue those shows this year. - Review: "Obsessed" - Luna Jones
Love and dating have never been exactly easy. Modern day dating, with all the dating apps and an influx of complicated “rules”, is difficult to navigate for many people. Luna Jones dives into this more in her latest song “Obsessed”. Dating alone can bring about many complex emotions, whether positive or negative. When you add in social media, dating apps, and other modern pressures it only becomes increasingly more difficult. Finding meaningful romantic experiences during an era that treats love like something of fiction and “situationships” as something more attainable can feel nearly impossible. “Obsessed” is brutally honest, revealing the struggles and frustrations that come with the modern dating scene that prioritizes short-term, casual flings and pushes them onto people who desire long-term, committed relationships. Luna Jones is very candid in “Obsessed”. Luna Jones makes it clear that vulnerability is not something to be feared or ashamed of but is a powerful move that shows strength and builds connections. She creates an open, vulnerable space with “Obsessed” for listeners to reflect on their personal experiences and challenges with dating. Luna Jones also openly gives listeners bits of herself and her experiences in the song which builds a mutual, powerful connection that shows listeners they are not alone when it comes to the relatable struggles of dating. “Obsessed” is an upbeat song with an indie pop vibe. The beat throughout and background instrumentals are extremely catchy, especially during the chorus when the song’s melody and tempo picks up and becomes brighter. During the versus, the simple, quiet sounds of a strumming guitar let Luna Jones’ beautiful, soulful voice really shine through. Luna Jones' soft and passionate vocals remind me somewhat of Clairo. The song itself reminds me of something you might hear from Olivia Rodrigo. Its vulnerable with catchy background instruments, clear melodies, and so relatable that it feels like Luna Jones took your personal life experiences and put them directly into her song. The laid-back vibe of the song makes it perfect to listen to at night when your thoughts might be running astray, but the emotion packed lyrics would also make you want to scream out your frustrations with dating alongside Luna Jones. Luna Jones discovered her passion for music early in life. She creates music and lyrics that showcase deep emotions of love and freedom. She is an authentic musician with a distinct message in all her songs, making her songs go beyond just being music, but a movement. Luna Jones is on a mission to start a revolution through her music where people can find a safe space to be free, feel, and live life to its fullest. Luna Jones never hesitates to reveal her personal experiences and truths in her music, encouraging her loyal listeners to do the same. Luna Jones latest single “Obsessed” was released on March 21st, 2025, and follows her previous releases “Celadon Comet” and “LoveBomb” which gained incredible attention. Her music gives people an outlet and encourages them to find their unique voice to live freely. Luna Jones is already on her way to becoming one of the greatest, most adored musicians of a generation. Her music gives people an outlet, and with each new song she releases, she is one step closer to starting a revolution by encouraging listers to find their voice through her empowering music. - Top 10 Most Iconic Girl Bands of All Time
To send off this year's Women's History Month with a bang, we thought it would be pretty cool to show you some of the most iconic girl bands of all time. Contrary to popular belief, women have always been a part of the music industry. In fact, the concept of a commercial all-female musical act has been around since the 1920s, beginning with the Hamilton Sisters and Fordyce. The trio paved the way for women in music and set the tone of the modern girl group we have today. Sound interesting? Well, read on, because we've got some even cooler connections you'll definitely want to hear about. 10. The Pussycat Dolls If you grew up in the 2000s, you certainly remember The Pussycat Dolls. Their signature 'bad girl' sound was the soundtrack of the decade. Their 2006 hit, "Buttons" was living rent-free in everyone's head, and honestly, it still does for many of us. However, these girls were versatile. While they produced confident pop hits like "Buttons" and "Don't Cha", they also released deeply emotional tracks like, "I Hate This Part" and "Stickwitu". This is a group that proved they had insane range and they weren't fooling around. 9. Twice We can't talk about girl groups without talking about Twice. This innovative hyper-girly K-pop group took girl power to another level with their debut in 2015. While they weren't the first or last group to include both Korean and Japanese members, the band is well-known for being one of the most accepting of different cultures. The friendships between group members are known to be some of the strongest, leading to Twice's genuine empowering sound. Additionally, the group isn't afraid to experiment with different genres and themes. In a short ten years, Twice has influenced the new wave of K-pop in ways they might have never expected, cutting a path for artists to be more creative in the mainstream. 8. Fifth Harmony Are you a Camila Cabello fan? Well, did you know she got her start in a little five-girl group called Fifth Harmony? If you aren't familiar with the band, they debuted in 2013 after forming on the music television show, The X Factor . And let me tell you, these are some of the most incredible live vocalists you will ever hear. The group's existence was a godsend for those who appreciate genuine vocal talent. Despite the group's falling out in 2018, each of Fifth Harmony's members have created vibrant and impressive solo projects. Camila Cabello has produced several radio hits while Normani is working with big names like Calvin Harris. Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Ally Brooke continue to release music too, and ALL of it is good. So if you haven't heard those solo tracks, give them a listen! There's your homework for today! 7. Le Sserafim Remember that new wave of K-pop we talked about earlier? Okay, Le Sserafim is the embodiment of that new wave. The only reason this group ranks higher than Twice is because they took Twice's cultural influence to another level. As a very new group debuting in 2022, Le Sserafim has already shattered several glass ceilings. The band is comprised of five members hailing from Korea, Japan, and the United States. Using their unique blend of cultures, Le Sserafim is known for recording in three languages. And I don't mean different versions of the same song (although, they do that too.). No, this group is known to switch languages as frequently as every other line. It keeps the music fresh and understandable from multiple perspectives. This is a group you NEED to watch, as they exude that creative energy of Hallyu 4.0. 6. Little Mix Remember that show where Fifth Harmony was formed, The X Factor ? Well, here's another brilliant group who rose to stardom on the platform. As a matter of fact, Little Mix actually won the competition in 2011. They broke ground as the first group to do so, as all previous winners had been solo artists. Following their success, they went on to release six studio albums and six UK Top 5 hits with, "Cannonball", "Wings", "Shoutout to My Ex", "Sweet Melody", and "Black Magic". Additionally, Little Mix is credited with reigniting a girl group renaissance throughout the 2010s in the UK and even created their own talent-based series, Little Mix: The Search in 2020. Although the iconic quartet has been on hiatus since the end of their "Confetti" tour in 2022, the band is still very much together. So, don't worry, there's always hope for a comeback! 5. TLC Okay, this one's for our 90s kids. Debuting in 1990, TLC released some of the most memorable girl power hits to date. This is a group that really sparked a sense of independence in girls and inspired us to know our worth. While a lot of music at the time was about loving others, TLC made music about loving yourself . With hits like "No Scrubs" teaching listeners never to settle for less and "Unpretty" diving into the pressures of modern beauty standards, TLC proved to be much more than a group of talented singers and dancers. They had real depth in their lyrics. They taught us 90s babies how to be stubborn and strong, and we're forever grateful. 4. BlackPink The ever-legendary girl group, BlackPink stands proud as the world's most popular all-female K-pop group, and second-most popular K-pop group of all time, just behind BTS. The group debuted in 2016, showcasing their signature style in the form of loud, energetic pop bangers like "Boombayah" and "Whistle". However, that's only half of the hype. BlackPink is often praised for its members' unique vocal talent. They provide more of a 'cursive' vocal sound than other girl groups, with diverse cultures similar to that of Le Sserafim. Each of the band's four members hails from South Korea, Thailand, and New Zealand, bringing a unique blend of talent and experience to the fold. BlackPink runs so Le Sserafim can sprint, and to be fair, they're both impeccably amazing artists. However, we have to rank BlackPink higher for their sheer impact on K-pop and pop music as a whole. 3. The Supremes Of course, the modern girl band wouldn't exist without the efforts of classic icons like The Supremes. That's why these gorgeous girls are at number three. The soulful group rose to fame in the 1960s during the Motown era. With Diana Ross as a prominent member, it's no surprise their music has been beloved for roughly seven decades. The Supremes are credited with paving the way for African-American artists, and especially women, to shine in the spotlight. Even if you don't think you know The Supremes, you know The Supremes. With hits like "You Can't Hurry Love", "Baby Love", and "Stop! In the Name of Love", this band's sound is completely synonymous with the late-60s sound. Their legacy is truly unforgettable. 2. Destiny's Child Okay, we know you've been waiting for this. Let's talk about Destiny's Child. We all know Beyonce. We all love Beyonce. But are you aware of how she got her start? Destiny's Child was a pop/R&B group consisting of three members, including the Queen Bey herself. Similarly to TLC and even debuting the same year (1990), Destiny's Child focused many of their lyrical themes around independence and self-worth. Hits like "Survivor", "Independent Woman", and "Say My Name", kept up the 90s and 2000s' girl power that still flows through our veins today. Of course, let's talk about the obvious impact. If you're reading this blog, you already know. The legendary Beyonce Knowles is the most Grammy-awarded artist in history with 35 awards. She has charmed decades with genre-breaking, earth-shattering talent, and it all started because of a little girl group called Destiny's Child. 1. Spice Girls Finally, the moment you've been waiting for, it's time to talk about the most iconic girl group of all time, The Spice Girls! If you think somehow, you've missed this UK icon, let me refresh your memory. The Spice Girls were formed in 1993 via auditions for a girl group to compete with the mega-popular boy bands of the 90s. In 1996, they produced one of the most successful pop songs of all time, "WannaBe". But the group was more than their music. The Spice Girls gave women and girls someone to identify with. Each member had a unique appearance and personality, leading to audiences choose a member to represent them personally. You might have seen those online quizzes before. Which Spice Girl are you? Are you Baby Spice, Sporty Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice, or Posh Spice? The concept of the group was so popular that it made them the top touring all-female group from 1998 all the way to 2020. There are so many more iconic girl bands that we hated to leave off of this list, so it was a tough decision. There are just too many talented groups! However, I'd like to give some honorable mentions to NewJeans, 2ne1, The Ronettes, The Shirelles, Girls' Generation, and every other girl band out there who deserves all the same love! So, what did you think of our list? Let us know on any of our socials below! Written By Shelbi Baker Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Spotify | TikTok | YouTube *copyright not intended. - Review: "Two Tickets" - Darrian Gerard
Photo Credits: Unfolding Creative Photos The feeling of disappointment is inevitable when someone you thought always had your back fails to be there for you when it matters most, even when you're on stage being praised by fans, all you want is to see that one face in the crowd. "Two Tickets" by artist Darrian Gerard explores these emotions of longing for that one person to always be by your side when you need them most but being let down by their absence. The song is filled with rage and yearning for that plus one and it does so in that edgy alternative rock style. The song is incredibly vivid as it portrays this story of a performance, bright lights and all. Darrian Gerard's performance matches the rage of the guitars as "Two Tickets" slams into listeners' ears, and with this, pure raw energy completely sells us on her work. From the start, you can definitely hear that pop punk inspired sound based on the tone of the guitars. The song begins with a full description of how this other person has been shaped into a new person, completely unrecognizable to the narrator. The speaker then goes on to express the silence on the other line. That absence is ever more present even amongst the crowd of fans at the speaker's performance. Darrian Gerard does an excellent job in painting this image, expressing how this ghost is all that runs through their head, haunting them for so long. The concept of the two tickets being aside with this person's name is a direct way to express the narrator's unwavering devotion to them even as the distance continues to grow. The way the chorus explodes with raw emotions reflects the imbalance in the relationship between these two people. What's really nice about the bridge is the choice to make it quieter than the rest to really portray how loud the silence from the other person is, also noted by the lyric "your absence was the loudest sound." Overall, "Two Tickets" does a great job of portraying what it's like for someone you used to hold so close growing away from you and how that absence never really leaves your mind. Darrian Gerard is an artist originally from British Columbia, Canada who has been releasing music since 2021. Over the year, she has released multiple singles and in 2023 she dropped her first EP "Basement Stadium" after receiving the Creative BC's Career Development grant. Her EP reached over 200k streams on Spotify and received recognition from multiple outlets. When it comes to her work, Darrian Gerard is very hands on, especially with "Two Tickets" in the writing, recording and producing process. The song was heavily inspired by blink-182's album, "One More Time" and you can definitely hear that classic pop-punk sound in this project. There's a very cool essence when it comes to Darrian Gerard and it will certainly be exciting to see what else she has in store for us.
