- Review: "Be Mine" - GIO DARA
Photo: Sammy Jones (@shotbysammy_) You can't put a timestamp on love. When you know, you just know. It doesn't matter if it's been a week, a month, or two days. When you meet the right person, you can truly feel it in your heart that they are the one. In GIO DARA's new song "Be Mine", he sings of a love like this - and he doesn't want to waste any more time not being by their side. This connection is so strong, it almost becomes a need for them to be around in order to thrive and be happy. GIO sings, "What is a lake without the water? What is a heart without a beat? What is a life without a lover?", really emphasizing the importance of having this person in his life, like as important as needing air to breath. "Be Mine" is both nostalgic and cathartic in it's soundscape. It holds a lot of detail, and reminds me of the early 2010's when folk rock was rising into mainstream. "Be Mine" has a strong stomping beat with acoustic guitar, piano and banjo taking the forefront of the instrumentation. It reminds me a lot of the likes of Mumford and Sons with the slight Celtic tone mixed with Americana Folk, but still keeping a modern flare. GIO's vocals are strong and passionate, but perhaps one of my favorite parts are the backup harmonies. They have these gorgeous dissonant moments that give you chills down your spine in the best way possible; and the added reverb gives the perfect heavenly touch. GIO DARA is a singer/songwriter originally from Georgia, but he spent most of his life in Ukraine. Two years ago, he made the decision to move to London, England to pursue his dream of being a music artist. He started out by busking all around London, performing live with his guitar on the streets and drawing attention from the busy crowds, gaining an audience for himself. He started releasing music in 2020, beginning with his debut single, "Feeling so Lost", but it was this year (2024) that GIO DARA really began to gain traction on streaming services, especially with his single "Now That I Found Her" which is about to surpass 1 million streams on Spotify alone. GIO DARA is heavily influenced by Ed Sheeran , and has a very authentic folk pop sound with meaningful lyrics and soaring raw vocals. - Review: "Walls Down" - JDimock
We already live in a world where it's super hard to trust people - so when you get close to someone and they finally convince you to be vulnerable, and then they stab you in the back anyway, it's literally the worst, most mentally debilitating feeling ever. "Walls Down" by JDimock is about letting somebody in, and then they turn out not to be who you thought they were. The sad, unfortunate part of it all is the more people break our trust, the bigger and stronger we build our walls back up once all the pain is over. The craziest part of it all is sometimes these people expect us to keep them in our lives, let alone ever trust them again. JDimock sings, "Promise you I'm not gonna stick around / Letting it go, I'm forgetting it all / This is what I get for dropping my walls". "Walls Down" is a soft acoustic ballad, using acoustic guitar as it's main instrument. There are multiple guitar parts throughout the song, some happening at the same time that gorgeously intertwine with each other. My personal favorite is the gentle, bright picking pattern that you can faintly hear in the background underneath the primary strumming. With minimal production, this song is meant to be very raw and emotional. JDimock sings with pure soul and feeling, singing his lead flawlessly while reverbed falsetto vocals and moments of harmony accompany him in the background. Co-Written with Kolbe Ballard , this song comes along with heart-wrenching, relatable lyrics about what it's like to regrettably let your guard down with the wrong person. JDimock is a passionate singer/songwriter who draws inspiration from a wide variety of artists, but uses mostly pop and hip-hop elements within his unique style of music. "Walls Down" was his debut single, which was released last year in 2023. He has done a lot since then including releasing his first ever album, titled "ON ICE". He has also released two fan favorite singles, "Not Freaking Out" and "Logical" which have both gained streams in the 10's of thousands. He is a person of faith, and loves to take the negative and turn it into a positive through his music to share with others and hopefully, help them through his words and melodies. JDimock is only getting started, so make sure to follow him on his socials below to see what's to come. - Review: "The High Road" - Essy
Essy’s latest single “The High Road” describes how the nuances and regrets of two parents' lives can congrue and influence the life of their children. Told from the perspective of a grown child, the lives of two people once intersected and completely altered the course of their hopes and dreams. The father once dreamed of a life different than the one he eventually grew into. Hopes of forming his own identity disintegrated in the wake of familial tragedy, and he eventually found himself empty-nested and keeping the company of his wife who once dreamed similarly to him. The mother, who spent her youth fantasizing about the influential screenplays she would write, now reads stories of fictional women who achieved dreams reminiscent of her own. Amidst the aftermath of their shared failed dreams, this pair who were once aspiring young dreamers are now left to influence their child in whatever ways they can. They taught their child to worry less about their future, and that would leave a lasting impression on our narrator. They look to the future and are forever comforted and empowered by their parents’ influence motivating them to not repeat their same mistakes. Because of their lessons, their child will always take the higher road and leave their past life for a better one. Click here to listen to "The High Road"! “The High Road” is an indie rock anthem with synthpop elements which blend together to form a modern single heavily influenced by nostalgic musical themes. We are kickstarted into a piece that immediately utilizes synthesizers to form the instrumental base. These synthesizers are prominent in the beginning and are gradually pushed aside. This allows the rock elements of the single to be less of a focal point and serve more as an ever-present foundation. Electric guitars are integrated throughout the entire piece, but they do not shine on their own until Essy’s easy-listening vocals are cut away. These guitars only occasionally jump to the forefront and briefly completely reformat the entire song. The instrumental forms a single that is heavily influenced by the past, but is recontextualized for the modern day with its production and almost sweet story-telling nature of the vocals. Essy is an American singer-songwriter who has been intertwined with music from a very young age. At just 11 years old, she taught herself how to play the piano. This allowed her to thrive in music and be accepted into NYU’s summer program and be taught by industry legends such as Barry Eastmond (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin). Since graduating from University, she has integrated herself into the music industry by writing for both herself and others. Her writing has been sung by artists such as Hunter Hayes and has skyrocketed her image and influence. The music she writes for herself has done considerably well and has established her as a cemented artist. Make sure to follow her on social media and give “The High Road” a listen! - Review: "Ephemeral" - Sara Ángel
Sara Ángel’s latest single, “Ephemeral”, dives into the depths of the human psyche, beautifully capturing the simultaneous struggle of trying to escape and searching for a remedy. Ángel draws us into her deeply creative mind with the title alone, prefacing the very nature of life itself: it’s impermanence. As she sings through her hardships, there’s a resounding theme of resilience that underlies the track, showing that there is strength, power, and liberation in art and music. While we may deeply resonate with being stuck in a seemingly never-ending rough patch, Ángel reminds us that we are not alone. The balance between the highs and lows may inevitably become skewed, but even so, they both pass, a gripping message that Ángel leaves us to sit with while listening. With a delicate, yet powerful delivery, Ángel pulls the listener in from the very beginning with her ethereal vocals. The phrasing, slow builds, and smooth tone allow the listener to absorb every one of Ángel’s thoughtfully heartfelt lyrics. One particularly special effect we get to hear throughout this track is the use of overlapping vocals. Not only is this choice compelling, making the sweet moments where the separate voices come together to harmonize so much more impactful, but it’s also sufficiently satisfying for the ear. Leaving no better way to tell her story and the shared narratives of many others, Ángel reinforces her position as a powerhouse vocalist and mesmerizes us with her masterfully conveyed emotion. In all its sorrow, sincerity, and beauty, "Ephemeral" is an inspiring piece that comforts those willing to open their hearts to Ángel's sound. - Review: "Weapons" - Cass Reinhardt
"Weapons" by Cass Reinhardt confronts the harsh realities of loving someone who doesn't treat you right. Exploring the manipulative words the speaker's partner has used to tear her down, listeners can feel the vulnerability in the lyrics. There's a grim catharsis felt through the accusatory questions in this track like "how does it feel to wound me?" The heart-wrenching truth of the song is that the speaker is severely hurt by the way she is constantly being spoken to, and the title of the song is used throughout the chorus as a powerful metaphor for the destructive thoughts and language forced upon the her. With a painful lack of autonomy, the lyrics "trying to live while I'm in your possession" take on the struggle of not being in control of your life. An emotional exploration of a toxic romance and a motivating message to leave a relationship that drags you down, this track will have you struck with its poetic honesty and vulnerability. Taking the raw truth from the lyrics and making them all the more impactful with sound, this somber tune beautifully explores what its like to be hurt by someone you love. Glowing acoustic guitar fingerpicking and Cass's reflective, high vocals open the track, with each word through the verse supported by a resonant echo. Layers of vocals harmonize with expressive high vocals, climbing towards the chorus alongside powerful percussion. As her singing soars comfortably into high notes, angelic vocalizing works softly in the background, supporting the intense feelings of vulnerability in the song. This indie folk-pop track uses the simplicity of its sad instrumentals and the beautiful expression of Cass's vocals to create a truly touching emotional experience. Cass Reinhardt is a New York-based pop artist with talents as a vocalist, lyricist, and music producer. - Review: "5 Stages of Grief" - Hutton
In Hutton’s aptly titled breakup anthem “5 Stages of Grief”, Hutton muses on what we go through after the breakup is all said and done. As a breakup is the end of something, it is only natural that we grieve what the relationship was and will not ever be– with soft strings and gentle percussion, listeners are treated to a gorgeously passionate track that details how we eventually get over and through the grief of that relationship’s end. All the denial, anger, bargaining, and depression will always end with acceptance. “5 Stages of Grief” takes us through that journey, but ultimately focuses on being okay with losing that once-special someone. If soft heartbreak is your thing, you’re going to love “5 Stages of Grief”. There’s something really special about this single; Hutton manages to infuse so much emotion into each line she sings, and as a listener you can really feel the weight of the relationship in the song. Each verse details a little bit about about said relationship and the corresponding stage of grief that the narrator is going through. And in the bridge, all of it comes to a head as Hutton sings, “It started with denial / you let me take the blame” and so on with anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. I love how the instrumentals swell here, gathering energy in this last burst of emotion before plateauing out into serene acceptance. The track remains consistent in its instrumentals throughout the runtime with a lovely guitar and temperate percussion, but I always love a song that increases its intensity in tandem with its lyrics. “5 Stages of Grief” is a beautiful song that, while about downs we go through during a breakup, truly highlights how we are always able to move on from it. Singer-songwriter Hutton has forever been an artist at heart. For her, creating music is a form of therapy, and a way to put emotions into words. Originally from Telluride, Colorado, at eighteen she moved to Los Angeles, and has spent the last two years working on developing her artist project. Working alongside producers Austen Healey, Runnner, Stephen Conley, and Derek Ted, Hutton has written a multitude of songs that are inspired by the sounds of the late 90s to early 2000s, as well as today’s pop artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Phoebe Bridgers, and Chappell Roan. 2024 saw Hutton’s debut single “COOL!”, as well as her second single “Afterparty”. “5 Stages of Grief” is Hutton’s third single, but is definitely not the last. - Review: "breaking like a heart" - dramaclub
Stuck in a bland and unfulfilling state of mind and reaching for a change, dramaclub's debut single "breaking like a heart" hits hard for listeners with its relatable search for connection and stimulation. The lyrics start off strong with "lost all my colors and it's grey right now," expressing the bleakness the speaker feels through poetic imagery. The song then delves into cravings of personal growth and a break from isolation, with the chorus moving through relatable wants to have meaningful experiences. Listeners will love the resonant expression of a dreamer who wants to live bolder in this expressive track. Ambient, slow strumming opens this atmospheric track before percussion, synth chords, and calm vocals join in. The verse is fast-paced with soft pop singing that blends into the chorus. Electronic instrumentals create a cool and exciting atmosphere as the song goes on with interesting interludes of synth notes and sounds that add to the hazy mood of this song. The experience of listening to this track feels like a floaty journey, embodying the detachment expressed in the lyrics. With the way the instrumentals build, there is a sonic break in the stagnant feelings represented in the lyrics with the alternative style of this song acting like a spark, igniting the lyrics with a textured infusion of sound. dramaclub is a music group from Florida whose genre-blending sound envelops emotional lyricism with a synth-heavy early-2000's influence to their style. - Review: "Softie" - MILA
MILA has released her debut single, “Softie,” which is part of an upcoming EP set to release next year. Let’s break down the genius of “Softie” and why you’ll probably end up relating to its lyrics. Initially, MILA portrays herself as “bulletproof”. In fact, she begins the song by describing herself as such, only to explain her current relationship has broken through this metaphorical armor. The Pre-Chorus of “Softie” only deepens the narrative of this relationship being transformative for the singer. It references magical concepts such as “voodoo” and describes this new love as “coming out of the blue.” The emotional tone of the song does an excellent job of balancing that intoxicating feeling of brand new love with lighthearted infatuation. As a result, anyone feeling giddy from a new crush or relationship will surely feel the emotional impact of this song. Reminiscent of Britney Spears’ Circus-era, “Softie” possesses bold production and unique instrumentation. The single excels at blending cutting-edge pop elements with nostalgic ones. Its tempo is quite fast, and when paired with a pulsating beat; the song nears electronic dance territory. MILA brings silky smooth vocals which act as the centerpiece of the single; they are delivered with sensuality and confidence. The bridge feels climatic, as it effectively pulls away a lot of the production’s layers to allow for the emotional themes of “Softie” to shine through.
