She Is Jules’s latest single “Dream Killer” frames the struggle of losing passion. Instagram influencers, trending podcasts, and childhood fairytales tell people to chase their dreams. But it’s getting harder and harder. In competition with AI, nepotism, and budget cuts, the road ahead wears She Is Jules down to couch surfing, skipping meals, and feeling hopeless. Although she wants to prove that music is what she loves, there’s no denying the physical and mental tolls. Pursuing her dream is killing her—the eye of the beholder and creator of the dreams.
The tension between soft verses and energetic choruses reflect the electric moments of hope among the hopeless in “Dream Killer.” The muted keyboard plays like the efforts constantly silenced by challenges. An upbeat pattern of snares and kick drums burst into the lines, “Maybe my dreams/ Are just dreams.” She tastefully uses autotune in the chorus, with a Charli XCX “Sympathy is a Knife.” There’s a sense of release. Despite how heartbreaking the honesty feels, it lets go of all the anxiety and celebrates expressing the truth—bringing artists back to what matters.
Julianna Pollifrone, known as She Is Jules, has been pursuing her dream since she was eight years old. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, she picked up a guitar and started writing music. Her influences are Julia Michaels, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Ellie Goulding. She played in church events, released her debut single Eyes Shut in 2017, and extended beyond her genre, singing vocals for EDM artists like Lost Sky.
