Review: "Holy Garden" - Madalen Duke

In an exciting and electronic new EP, Madalen Duke feeds her fans yet again. Five songs all with her dark pop sound, From the Tower has been a massive hit since its release 10 days ago. She has said that this EP is about “coming into your own power”, a lesson every young woman should learn. Her single “Holy Garden'' explains this very feat, alluding to her own personal power by comparing it to a holy garden. Through different motifs of apples and vines, Duke tells a story about her garden growing strength and becoming her personal fortress, giving her power as she comes into her own as a young adult. The song itself is electronic pop, full of dark synths and heavily produced vocals that add to her eerie vibe.

The song starts in a slow, synth filled void, slowly gathering speed and strength until the chorus hits. She sings about slowly rising to the top of all of those around her, and assuming her position at the top of the garden. In her chorus, she sings, “I look you dead in the eyes / lost in heavenly vines / there is nowhere to hide / in my holy garden”. Such strong lyrics with such a girl boss attitude, you can almost see Duke placed in the center of a luxurious and growing garden, all of her enemies stuck beneath her. Different lyrics again reinforce her power, when she sings lines such as “They fall one by one / so easily” and “these roses / they grow eternal”. She recently released a music video for this track as well, which depicts Duke sulking around her large and luxurious castle, making eyes at the camera and taking power stances.

Madalen Duke has been releasing music since 2017, and has almost reached 1 million monthly listeners. The name of this recent EP comes from the meaning behind her name, Madalen, which means ‘from the tower’. She took this as the EP’s title, and has stated that it feels like coming into her own power. Duke is a singer-songwriter based in Vancouver, Canada, and has fans as far away as Asia and South America. She has opened for Post Malone, and has placed her songs in various video games and on Monday Night Football.
