Review: "ruin july" - Anderson Hao

Anderson Hao ruin july Cover Art.

This song, “ruin july” by Anderson Hao, is a rhythmic indie-pop song all about how the memories of a bad relationship can taint something you once loved. Made in a garage studio in Los Angeles, California, Hao wrote and recorded this to process what’d happened to her the year before, and ended up creating a song that touches at the heart of what so many people experience. With lyrics like “stuck in time with the months running away,” “I don’t think I’ll ever get to explain,” and the titular “you ruined july for me,” this song so poignantly describes how one person can mar something that was once such a big part of you. But with time, you find yourself and your peace again.

“ruin july” relies on rhythmic beats mixed with soft vocals to create a moody atmosphere that perfectly carries the message of the song. Starting right off the bat with catchy percussion, you’re pulled into it immediately, bopping your head and tapping your foot. The almost lighthearted instrumentals are a perfect contrast to the darker lyrics, keeping you engaged and always listening for something new every time you hit play. The two and a half minute length leaves you wanting more, a perfect length to keep you coming back. Overall, the slightly experimental, but familiar sound is soothing for all fans of sad music, and it’s already become a favorite of mine.
