- Review: "In Love on My Own" - MATEO
"In Love on My Own" by MATEO is a powerful reflection on loving someone who doesn't feel the same way. Through playing back moments and weaving questioning with regret, the lyrics take you on a journey of memories, flowers, and love letters with unreturned sentiments. Still caught up in the idea of their lost romance, this song shows the bitter truth, that it's not easy to get over someone even if you know a relationship will only end in heartbreak. The lyrics are vulnerable and introspective about the reasons the speaker holds onto a love that isn't right. Experience the passionate journey of reflection and mourning that this heartache anthem has to offer. Glowing instrumentals meet comforting acoustic fingerpicking in this heartfelt, emotional pop song. MATEO's vocals are intimate and melodic, working through verse with an emotionally expressive tone. The tune raises the emotion in the track to a different level of intensity with a melismatic falsetto that embodies the soulful sadness of the lyrics. Vocal layers of powerful belting and singing bring a heart-wrenching texture to the chorus. - Review: "You're Not As Tired As I" - AICK
For AICK’s second single of 2024, they’ve released “You’re Not As Tired As I” as an exploration of the thin line between vulnerability and strength. Knowing that you can rely on yourself is often a good thing, and that independence is an important trait to have; but, oftentimes people can fall into the pitfall of believing that they’re the only ones they can depend on, and end up denying the help of those around them. We close ourselves off and turn away, believing that to be the best option for ourselves. AICK’s single points out the inner turmoil we go through when that’s the case. It takes a lot of strength to be open and vulnerable, and with the track’s eclectic mixture of disjointed synth and heavy percussion, this is a song whose soundscape is original and message integral. I think what’s going to be most prominent to people when listening to “You’re Not As Tired As I” is the soundscape. Its complexity is so much fun to listen to with its layers of synth and percussion, all being tied together with smoother-than-butter vocals. Around the song’s middle, there is a sudden split in tone, and listeners get treated to a super slick bass as the track becomes a little more lighter, energetic; I love the change, and I think that it keeps the track fresh and original. Listeners are able to hear two fairly different soundscapes, one being lower and the other far more upbeat, but they match one another so well with their instrumentals and vocals keeping them in the same realm. And then AICK adds those amazing lyrics to an already amazing track, and now you get a song with both a fantastic soundscape and meaningful lyrics. “You’re Not As Tired As I” comments on our wants and needs to lean on another person for help, but the resistance we put up against it. The line “In the dark you won’t see me cry” emphasizes our need to hide our fears, our need for help. The rest of the lyrics follow a similar pattern of the narrator both asking and resisting help, at once wanting someone to hold their hand but then turning around to say that they won’t see them cry. “You’re Not As Tired As I” is just one of those songs that has a million ways you can listen to it, and it’s definitely a track for those of you who like a varied listening experience with songwriting that speaks from the heart. Composed of guitarist Eik Buhl Petterson and dancer and pianist Helene Høier, AICK is an alt-pop duo that hails from Copenhagen. The high school friends focus their music on youth, confusion, and stubbornness, while combining dreamily bold soundscapes that have their listeners getting lost in. While Petterson is most comfortable in the studio, Høier enchants stages with her presence and contemporary dance moves. The duo debuted in 2021 with their eponymous EP “AICK”, which was later followed by a few singles in 2023, as well as another EP entitled “Long Intermission”. “You’re Not As Tired As I” follows AICK’s second single of 2024, “Actor”. You should absolutely be listening to the rest of AICK’s discography if you enjoyed “You’re Not As Tired As I”! Written By Alexa Leung FOLLOW AICK: Instagram | Spotify | Facebook
- Review: "We're Over Now" - Cece Benz
Although sometimes we might not want certain relationships to end, if that’s what's for the better they eventually do. It doesn’t mean we won’t reminisce on memories and hope for one more second with the person we lost. “We’re Over Now” by Cece Benz is about coping with your ex moving on with someone new and realizing your relationship has truly ended. Watching someone you love fall in love with someone else is one of the most gut wrenching feelings, especially when it seems like their relationship is better than yours was. Although looks may be deceiving, watching your ex pine over someone else where it seems like they are a completely different person (when it comes to relationships) hurts. Watching them give someone else the treatment you wanted but never received stings. Cece thought her ex wasn’t capable of love, but then she questions if maybe he just wasn’t in love with her because he didn’t show it very well. This song is about wanting more. Cece saw right through his flaws and called him out on his act. She thinks that might be a reason why the relationship ended. There’s also a lyric in the song that I really resonate with, “'Tis the Damn Season”, for many reasons. First of all, I’m a huge swiftie so this lyric being a subtle nod to Swift’s song (of the same name) is very exciting. “'Tis the Damn Season” by Taylor Swift is about going back to your hometown and seeing someone from your past that you used to be very connected with. Time stops moving when you are reconnecting with your past, but everyone else continues to move. When you leave your hometown and are finally snapped back into reality your world begins to start again, but now you have an open wound. Cece does a great job connecting Swift’s meaning to her own song, which is very fitting to the theme of “We’re Over Now.” Now, Cece is back in her hometown reminiscing on the past and is filled with memories and overwhelming feelings about people from a certain time in her life. “We’re Over Now” is a beautifully layered acoustic indie track about time moving on but being stuck in the past. It’s also about realizing that a past relationship is truly over because your ex is currently moving on with someone else. Produced by Luke Giles, “We’re Over Now” is a great song to listen to when you’re in your feels. Cece really opens up through her lyrics. She expresses true vulnerability, especially by the way she sings. I love that the acoustic guitar is the foundation of the instrumentation. As the song progresses, more elements like shakers and upbeat tones are added to the track. Cece’s tone and voice are so unique and so easy to listen to, because she’s that good. Cece Benz is a singer-songwriter from Atlanta. She began writing and performing original music at twelve years old so it’s safe to say she had her talents from a very young age. Right now, she is a student at Berklee College of Music where she continues to grow her abilities as a musician. She’s performed all over Atlanta, Nashville, and Boston playing at a variety of different venue types. Cece’s lyrics are personal yet relatable. She is definitely a rising star and one to look out for. Check out “We’re Over Now” and give it a listen! Written By Alexa LaMalfa FOLLOW CECE BENZ: Instagram | Spotify | TikTok | YouTube

- Review: "Where The Pitiful Reside" - Koala Bar
"Where The Pitiful Reside" by Koala Bar is an introspective track that deals with the dark emotions that arise from rejection. This song weaves its poeticism into feelings of resentment with lyrics like "there's more than meets the eye for an eye" at the beginning, delving listeners into ideas of nuances buried under the surface and a need for retaliation. Demonstrating the way these spiteful feelings can age you, beautiful metaphors powerfully work through the track, calling the speaker "a mayfly growing old". This singular dark reflection takes a unique journey through precise turns of phrase that will leave you haunted. Gloomy & reflective, "Where The Pitiful Reside" will move you with its intimately dark sound. Bold percussion creates an ominous feeling throughout the tune and piano follows the melody of the vocals with a repeating pattern consistent throughout the song. Soft male vocals bring a hazy sense of reflection to the track what will have you hanging onto every single word. - Review: "Orion" - Tobi LaCroix
With knowledge beyond his years, 16 year old Tobi LaCroix released his latest single “Orion” on November 22nd, and the track has already gained over 3,000 streams. The lyrics follow LaCroix’s point of view of growing up and settling into adulthood, while mourning the loss of childhood and innocence. He begins to realize that there is always another shoe to drop, a downside to every goodside, and that nothing is ever as bright as it was as a child. For his whole life he would sing to the constellation Orion, and now he asks the stars to watch over him, but also wishes that they had told him about what was to come in the future. The lyrics of this track are heartfelt and extremely emotional, and while the soundscape is somewhat pop, there are underlying tones of nostalgia and wistfulness. LaCroix’s first verse talks about how he has grown up, now sports grey hairs, and has an inner sense of guilt so commonly felt in young adults. The electronic background comes together into a cymbal drop, and LaCroix sings the chorus, “Orion / Watch over my foolish head / I was a kid who didn’t know / That I would end up dead”. In the next verse, he compares things of when he was a child and how they have lost all of their light: daisies and his “seven-year-old zeal”. This message is strung throughout the rest of the track, and LaCroix’s emotive voice tells the tale of growing up but wishing to grow back down. A student at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, Tobi LaCroix wrote his first song at just age four. Since then, he has studied piano, performed at various festivals, and amassed a large following online. Garnering support from artists such as Halsey, AZA, and Alanis Morissette via his social media content, his career is only on the up. Also dabbling in the theater world, LaCroix dreams of performing on Broadway one day, and is currently creating his own musical production. - Review: "Would've Been Beautiful" - Sam Drysdale
"Would've Been Beautiful" by Sam Drysdale is a heart-wrenching dive into fantasies of what life may have been had the speaker started a life and family with the romance of their youth. Longing tangles with reminiscence in these emotional lyrics warming listeners into the idea of what the relationship had been: two people who were only kids when they feel in love. The speaker of the song mourns the life they never started together, growing at deep as to imagine their children would have had their mother's eyes, before reflecting on the distance between them now. When a break up isn't mutual, it can lock you into those cycles of 'what ifs', and this track flips between those moments of wondering and periods of acceptance with lyrics like "I'm afraid to give up on this, but I don't blame you for being honest." Get lost in this intense exploration of struggling to move on with this vulnerable track. Slow, simple guitar fingerpicking open the song, continuing its gentle sound throughout the track. Carrying the raw and authentic spirit of the lyrics, the only instrumentals that fold in are deliberate with glowing ambient chords used sparingly to emphasize the vulnerability in the tune. Sam's soulful vocals are slightly raspy and hit the ear with an extremely expressive narrative sound. Reaching incredibly impactful high notes and vocal layering, the singing is extremely deliberate in coloring mentions of the past with a glowing warmth. With bold ventures into throaty passion, Sam's singing plays with your heart strings. - Review: "Caught In The Rain" - Alvin Weise
“Caught In The Rain” is yet another example of just how raw and vulnerable Alvin Weise is willing to get. As open as Weise was in this song, the lyrics tell a different story of someone who was used to running away from vulnerability. Oftentimes, people view showing emotion as a sign of weakness, but in reality it’s one of the most powerful and freeing things you can do. This song symbolizes how lonely and heavy it can feel when you force yourself to hold everything in. The title “Caught In The Rain” even serves as a metaphor of being stuck in a figurative storm of emotions that seem never ending. But in many cases, the clouds tend to dissipate when we talk about our feelings and seek the necessary help to navigate them. Speaking about what the song means to him, Weise said, “‘Caught In the Rain’ takes me back to a time of loneliness and self-doubt. I was afraid to show weakness, which made me even more isolated. I tried masking my pain, but it all came crashing down. Writing ‘Caught In the Rain’ was both a cry for help and a moment and a moment of clarity.” Weise’s new single is a song that hits you right in the feels. The track starts off with sounds of rain that are met with a beautiful piano melody that draws you in immediately. As Weise’s vocals came in, I was immediately captivated. His voice was powerful, and also had an endearing warmth to it as well. Weise’s vocals remind me a bit of Lewis Capaldi , whose voice has a similar ache and echoey sound that I heard in “Caught In The Rain.” Along with the piano, the song also incorporated a fun drumbeat that helped build the climactic tension in certain parts of the song. Written, mixed, and produced entirely by Weise himself, “Caught In The Rain,” is a reflective pop gem that everyone should hear. Alvin Weise is a 25-year-old Swedish pop artist, who has proven himself to be a musical triple threat. Growing up in Stockholm, Weise always had music around him. The artist began playing the guitar at the age of 10 and has never looked back. Weise is also currently finishing his final semester at the Musikmakarna, which is known as The Songwriting Academy of Sweden. Although Weise is still a fairly new artist, he’s already had the opportunity to have his songs attached to some musically historic places. His single, “Starting Over,” which he wrote and produced himself, was mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. Weise has made a name for himself as a pop artist who’s not afraid to get vulnerable and his latest single, “Caught In The Rain” is no different. “Caught In The Rain” is out now on all music streaming platforms.
