  • Review: "Don't Give Up" - Pelch

“I don’t have nothing if I don’t have us.” This line solidifies the overall theme of this ballad. The piano accompanies Pelch as he counts the reasons why he loves his person. Pelch’s soulful and sincere voice amplifies the overall tone of the song which is gratitude as well as admiration. “This infinite flame, I want to ignite.” Pelch is singing of forever with this person who has shown him that they want forever as well. It’s always a great feeling when you’re on the same page with a person and you don’t have to second guess their feelings for you. There’s this tone of admiration while painting the picture of what led to this point in the relationship where relying on this person is as easy as breathing because you’ve been through the fire with this person and you both have scars from it, but it only made you stronger. “I fell for you once, I’ll fall for you twice.” These lyrics serve the same purpose as wedding vows in the promises they make and the love they’re conveying. Pelch is saying I’d choose you, every single time, no hesitation, no questions asked. Describing the inspiration behind this song, Pelch notes ““Sometimes I wonder why I want to be an artist but I got someone in my life who never gave up on me. That someone waited for me, cause I wasn’t ready! She’s an inspiration, the song is for her.” So, the waiting that Pelch sings about is true to life in that this person displayed patience while waiting for Pelch in that capacity, having that patience and letting love be the driving force. “Ashes to ashes I’ll love you to dust.” The words that Pelch uses to describe his love for this person and the overall theme of not giving up, loving someone to dust is considered the ultimate love because it’s saying that you’ll love them to death. “Ashes to ashes” is, of course, the words that are heard the most at funerals and the saying also talks about our bodies returning to the dust for when we die. Pelch also sings of “taking the bullet” and “being on the front lines”. These are words that aren’t meant to be taken lightly. This song appears to be Pelch’s love letter to himself as well as his lover to not give up, so he’s asking his love to keep the faith while also inspiring himself to hold on and that everything will be alright. The addition of the choir further drives home Pelch’s statements of loving this person with every ounce of his being and wanting to show them that and also thank them for loving him just that much, if not more. Pelch is a Canadian singer/songwriter. The 23-year-old vocalist is said to be inspired by artists such as Dermot Kennedy, Lewis Capaldi and Morgan Wallen. At such a young age, it is apparent that Pelch has a hold on his voice and knows the ins and outs of how to use it to produce feelings in songs and how to resonate with people. About his songs, Pelch states “I want to reach as many people as possible.” Well, with a voice like his and with lyrics like those in “Don’t Give Up”, I do not believe that that will be a problem for Pelch. Pelch’s online presence is seemingly the perfect balance of glimpses into his personal life as well as keeping his fans up to date with all things his music. Pelch has an online following of hundreds of thousands of followers across social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok also amassing 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. • Review: "Attention" - Galloway

Galloway’s new song “Attention” gives an anxiety-ridden mind a break, getting lost in sensation. The lyrics take listeners through the over-thinking, self-critical, and hyper-analytical mind set of the speaker, highlighting behaviors through lyrics like “stockpile all the missteps” and “you’re just confused, I’m in hell”. These words resonate deeply with anyone who gets stuck in their head, with a stark comparison of confusion and distress. That grasping for a tangible answer while getting stuck in a cycle of maybe’s and what if’s can become a constant, and the lyrics “I’ll just pretend I’m alright” feel like that relatable mask we put on when we are not okay. The chorus takes us into touch, allowing the speaker to ground themself in sensation, and saying “I like the feeling when you’re giving me too much attention”. This stimulation, while not taking away the person’s stresses, allows for solace in a moment of escape. Telling listeners that they are not alone in racing thoughts and worries, this song lets people know that you can enjoy life’s pleasures even while anxieties exist. Fast-paced, deep, and twangy layers of synth instrumentals bring an edgy and stimulating opening to this song. The sound emulates the continuous thoughts portrayed by the speaker in the lyrics. The vocals are calm and flowy, and background vocals echo the lyrics like reverberating thoughts. Percussion joins the instrumentals, punctuating the song with gentle pulses, and the lyrics speed up during the pre-chorus. Every layer of the song gets louder and more defined as instrumentals drop the electronic sound and the vocals brightly coast through the positive feeling of the chorus. In an exciting blend of thoughtful and uplifting sounds, "Attention" is a calm song in a storm of racing thoughts. Galloway is a LGBTQ+ independent alt-pop band from North Carolina. In 2017, Lawson Galloway began his musical pursuits solo, but since then, the band has grown to include Robert Redfield on guitar, Travis Hayes on keys and guitar, Nick Williams on bass and keys, and Daniel Crump on drums. • Review: "Money" - Brother Vice

In a world wrought with everyday worries, Brother Vice’s song “Money” embraces a relationship as an uplifting escape. The lyrics delight in the potential they share with their partner, before dreaming of what their lives could be if they were unburdened by financial restrictions. The song pulled on my heartstrings with the relatable and passionate feeling of wanting to give your partner the life they deserve. The song expresses the speaker’s want for their partner, to “watch you bloom and break the curse where worry can’t find us and wake us from our dreams”. This line understands that the restraints that hold them back are as dooming as though supernatural forces are against them. By contrast, money is the magical answer to solve this problem, as the chorus moves through its liberating hopes, saying “if I had the money, we’d fly away. Get married in Vegas and live in LA”. I was struck with how much these lyrics apply to me, or to anyone who wants to build their lives free of restriction. The hope of starting a future together paired with a desire to show their partner a different part of the world is an emotional and touching message that will make you want to sing along. Vocals open the song with a soft throaty, early 2000’s alt-esque emotion. Pulsing, palm-muted guitar plunges listeners into a nostalgic and uplifting feeling, before electric guitar patterns and percussion join in. An energizing electricity lifts you up with the way the instrumentals grow in sound and complexity. The vocals are projected louder, and that throaty passion gains even more force, working up to the chorus with an articulate intensity. A fast-paced and rounded sound boldly expresses the lyrics in the chorus. Through the next verse, the vocals layer frustration and want in their sound, having abandoned all softness. Drawing inspiration and strength from hopes and dreams, “Money” brings an emboldened sound that will leave you feeling fulfilled. Brother Vice is a Belfast-based independent rock band with an exciting and resonant sound. The band is made up of vocalist and guitarist, James Feely; lead guitarist, Neil Mone; and Aidan Watters on drums. The group has been featured by programs like the Sounds of NI Radio Show , and has received praise from stations including Future Hits Radio , Chordblossom , and BBC Introducing . • Review: "4:05" - Rohin

Rohin’s latest single “4:05” delves into the mindset behind letting go of your stability and giving into an intoxicating lifestyle. There aren’t many things to look forward to in recent days. Every late night seeps blends into the morning until they’re indistinguishable. After weeks of hanging onto happier childhood days, you wonder if there is really a point in changing how you’ve been. It feels as though there is nothing wrong with letting intoxicating fumes consume you and do things you’ll forget the next day. You never truly enjoy the morning and the responsibility each day brings you. You can only dread the days as you crawl through them and crash each night. All you can do is forget each night and wait for the next one to creep ever closer to you. Click here to listen to "4:05"! “4:05” is an indie pop rock anthem that remains consistently fast paced throughout its entirety. From the first note, a fast tempo instrumental leads the charge of this piece. This appears reminiscent of one of the lyrics “It’s slow days, fast nights”, linking its melodic tempo and the overall narrative. This speed is encompassed by the percussive elements that remain largely unchanging until the bridge. The impressive vocal performance by Rohin largely keeps pace and is consistent with each instrumental addition and verse change. During each chorus, more vocal stems and harmonizations are seamlessly incorporated. Each element curates a melodic experience reminiscent of its overall story and themes. Rohin is a Canadian singer-songwriter currently based in Toronto, Canada. When Rohin was just 18, he wholeheartedly began his pursuit into the music industry and moved to Toronto. He began recording his first few songs, but felt isolated and confused. He used this difficult time adjusting by incorporating his thoughts and emotions into his music. By collaborating with other musicians, he was able to release his music into Part 1 of his debut EP, “so follow me down”. He regularly documents his musical journey on social media sites such as Tiktok and Instagram. Some of his posts include covers of songs by bands such as Bon Iver and Coldplay. • Review: "Take Your Time" - Chloe Copoloff

Hitting hard for all the people who can trace a lost romance back to a single mistake, Chloe Copoloff’s song “Take Your Time” helps listeners understand that you can’t rush someone when it comes to love. The song takes us through the precise moment that the speaker of the song pushed too far in the form of a goodnight kiss. It’s hard to know when feelings are one-sided, or even just when they need time to level out for another person. The lyrics take us into the speaker’s mind state, saying “the rush, your skin, the feelings in my bones”. These words express those solid and certain feelings that can stop you from seeing another perspective. There’s a lesson in the lyrics, telling listeners not to speed into actions just because their emotions call for it. The song encourages people to let romance develop organically as heartache, regret, and longing bleed through the words. Dwelling on what the speaker could have done better, the chorus says “I wish I would’ve let you miss me, and let you take your time”. When you're reeling from the pain of heartbreak, or even just in need of an emotional outlet for feeling, this song will take you through thoughts and experiences that let you know that people make mistakes in relationships, and you are not alone. In a passionate expression of regret and self-reflection, “Take Your Time” copes with the hurt that comes with rushing the delicate beginning of a romance. Acoustic guitar strums are slow, and you can hear the sound of fingers sliding across the strings, adding to the muddled emotions felt through the song. Sad and simple piano chords accompany Chloe’s expressive vocals. Her voice carries a somber quality through the verse, bringing a confessional depth to the tune. Chloe's vocals lift to a hazy feeling like a memory through high, layered singing through the pre-chorus. The layered vocals continue through the chorus, blending levels of pop and folk sounds that hit the ear like a combination of Maisie Peters and Kacey Musgraves. Vocalizing at the end of the chorus gave me time to absorb the regret and questioning felt through the lyrics, like a musical reflection. A more uplifting sound comes in layered instrumentals in the bridge, teasing listeners with a positive sound as the lyrics contemplate what could have been. With a longing and vulnerable sound, “Take Your Time” will allow you to reflect, and make a touching addition to your heartbreak playlists. • Review: "Complicate This" - Rainbow City Park

“Complicate This” by Rainbow City Park begs to take a relationship in the direction of romance through moments of vulnerability and intimate intensity. This song captures that feeling when you’re so close to getting together with someone, but you’ve got that lingering fear that you’ve misread the signs. The song begins by laying the speaker’s hesitancy on the line, fearing a lack of reciprocation, and quickly squashes those doubts through the lyrics, “I see red flushing your cheeks and it’s no question to me”. From the very first verse, the lyrics had me rooting for the couple, inspiring excitement in my chest. Shifting to a feeling of certainty, the pre-chorus asks the question, “who’s gonna be the first one to make a move?” These words take listeners into the intensity of the moment as these people sit in their attraction to one another. These words tell listeners that yes, romance is more complex, but it’s definitely worth giving it a go. Gaining a soothing excitement, the vocals work slowly through the questions through the pre-chorus, prolonging the intensity of the want that is buzzing through the words. With immense poetics and an intoxicating expression of art, Alas de Liona’s new release “Vine Song” takes an introspective trip of love and vulnerability. From the very start, the lyrics entrance listeners with a sacred level of imagery. “A vine tendrils on your face” brings our perspective into the eyes of the speaker, beautifying this person through the caress of nature’s touch. Furthering a feeling of adoring connection, the lyrics say “my dreams compress me with your atmosphere”. From the cosmic language of attraction to delves into the actions of the speaker’s unconscious mind, these words place the relationship on a higher plane of existence. Beyond the beautification of one connection, the lyrics show the speaker’s deep need for togetherness, saying “I hold onto the ghost of anyone”. Taking these words into their minds, listeners are brought to think about what people mean to them. With a divine sensation of love and connection, this song will take you into another realm through its ethereal imagery and poetic lyrics. Combining an introspective and resonant sound like AURORA, and a special sentiment of Alas de Liona’s own, “Vine Song” is the type of track you listen to while lying down with your eyes closed so you can appreciate every moment. The instrumentals are very quiet as Alas’s hauntingly atmospheric vocals begin, reaching a high and soothing pitch that lulls your ears into a state of calm fascination. With an entrancing and holy sound, the vocals transfix you and take time with the lyrics, allowing listeners to bask in the meaning. A pattern of notes repeats as the vocals get lower before the chorus, conveying the vulnerability of the lyrics. • Review: "Caffeine" - Hannah Duckworth

Coming in hot as a steamy morning pick-me-up, Hannah Duckworth’s new song “Caffeine” uses its title as a metaphor for the way a relationship feels. For some people, being a whole and functioning human is entirely dependent on their morning and afternoon and evening cup of coffee. We become addicted to the routine of letting it lift us through every day life. For the speaker of this song, it’s their partner that keeps them going. The lyrics “to get through the day I need you running through my veins” give that visceral idea that the speaker’s partner lives in their body, reaching every living part of them. In the chorus, the lyrics show just how unique the connection is, saying “you’re the only thing that makes me feel this rush”. An addictive excitement comes through the message that the love “Caffeine” describes is a vice the speaker will never quit. Intimate and invigorating dependency pulses through the relationship in this song, leaving listeners lifted by the jolt of caffeinated romance. With instrumentals and vocals keeping a fast-paced feel throughout, “Caffeine” infuses its sound with a whirlwind of energy pulsing through the lyrics. Guitar acts as a cool and steady background to the frantically expressive vocals that emulate a caffeinated urgency through the verses. Percussion keeps the song progressing, speeding up with the rapid lyrics. Rounded vocals and louder guitar amp up the sound in the chorus, with Hannah’s vocalizing and the grungy instrumentals bringing a pop-rock energy. In the middle of the chorus, the frazzled quickness of the words slows down to a pulsing emphasis on each syllable, along with punchy guitar emphasizing every word, before racing back to that invigorating speed. Listeners will love the stimulating feeling that comes from this souped-up serenade. Hannah Duckworth is a singer and songwriter from Seattle who blends rock, pop-punk, and emo genres in her sound. • Review: "Parking Lot" - Emma Teufel

Rage, devastation, and honesty flood listener’s ears in Emma Teufel’s new release, “Parking Lot”. The song is a message to a person who strung the speaker along, teetering on that tricky line between friend and relationship by offering misleading actions and words. It’s a disillusioning feeling when someone you thought was interested in you ended up being greedily deceiving. This song stands in solidarity of all the people who put effort, time, emotion, and dedication into a person only to be wrong about their true intentions. The lyrics amplify the greed that led to betrayal, saying “you were climbing high, you wanted more, you craved the rush of winning wars”. Portraying the idea that the speaker was merely collateral damage in the person’s pursuit of success, these words hit like a gut punch. The chorus repeats “I tried, for what?” A question like this fuels listeners with the devastation that comes from wasting your time and emotional dedication only to be left feeling used. With vocals that explore a beautiful range of sound and expression, and an acoustic instrumental vibe that brings a light and entrancing feel to the song, “Parking Lot” is an expressive track that keeps you listening on the edge of your seat. Emma’s expressive voice moves from a softer, vulnerable sound to gliding through passionate high notes, then onto a rage-fuelled gravelly projection. Gentle guitar opens the song along with the vocals, before a light and glowing note repeats, like a percussive twinkle through the song. As the lyrics flood the vocals with a reflective anger, drums add force to the emotion. In the chorus, Emma’s voice soars melismatically through her emotional statements, bringing in a high note for the question, “for what?” The song breaks through its glowy and mellow background, and gaining a grungy and electronic force at the end of the song, the instrumentals give power to the accusation in the questioning lyrics. • Review: "Jealous" - PLAYHOUSE x noelle

Taking listeners on a journey of empowerment, PLAYHOUSE and noelle’s new song “Jealous” looks at the negatives that can come from a breakup and decides against embracing them. The verses express the speaker’s mourning, because no matter what you do, heartbreak hurts. The words “every time that my phone rings, catch myself tryna catch my breath” communicate such a relatable post-breakup feeling. Listeners can resonate with the sensation of hanging onto the possibility that their new ex may reach out, and this demonstration of how it physically manifests feels all too true. The pre-chorus takes the truths of a breakup and aligns them with a healthy consolation: “I don’t wanna love you if you wouldn’t love back”. This powerful statement encourages listeners to place their focus on healing, with the understanding that unreciprocated love is not better than the end of a relationship. With a chorus that shows why a clean break is the way to go, the lyrics motivate listeners to escape jealousy and not maintain a connection merely for the sake of memories. Bright electronic instrumentals, the snappiest percussion, and noelle’s sleek pop vocals bring a comforting energy to “Jealous”. The song opens on a peppy pattern of notes before fading out for noelle’s confident and narrative vocals and rhythmic percussion like snapping fingers takes listeners through the verse. Playing around with the melody, the vocals stretch the syllable of the word “I”, adding a fun texture to an emboldening personal message. The vocals get louder, caressing high notes as the percussion picks up and chords match the notes of the melody adding emphasis to the beginning of each line. The very same fun note pattern from the song’s opening has an interlude after the chorus before the second verse comes in with a bright and motivating feel. The exciting and resolutely  optimistic sound of “Jealous” will make you feel the lyrics’ meaning as it lifts you up.
