Falling in love can inhibit your greatest virtues and senses. It can make you do things you’d never do before, and can have you ignoring the clearest warning signs about your potential partner. Alex Westin’s latest single “Red Lights” follows these themes, as he finds himself running every red light just to get to his lover faster. The track switches back and forth from acknowledging that he is missing integral parts of character, and yet he really doesn’t care. He runs toward it anyway, because he feels unstoppable when they are together. Westin wrote and produced this track himself, and plays most of the instruments heard. “Red Lights” has a mix of folk, indie, and pop sounds, which he blends seamlessly to tell this story. This track opens with enthusiasm and excitement, as Westin chants a line that later is highlighted in the chorus: “Running every red light for you”. A tall claim for the first lyric, he follows it in the first verse with lyrics explaining his past relationships, and how he has not been perfect. He sings, “I missed the warning signs / and failed to read between the lines”. He is familiar with the negative aspects of love, and yet he falls so deeply into this one that he chooses to bypass safety. In the chorus, he sings “Facing all my fears / To keep you around for a while / Is it all for me / Things you say you feel / Cause now baby I’m / Running every red light for you”. "All That Bad" is the newest single from Lexi Faye , a song about going above and beyond for someone you trust, only for them to turn their back on you. Whether you confide in a friend, significant other, or family member, Faye warns listeners about the consequences of blindly trusting anyone, no matter who they are. People can easily switch up and hurt you, and feel no remorse in doing so. Faye sings about this betrayal in "All That Bad', wondering what she did to deserve it from the subject of the lyrics. When things come to an end, it’s easy to imagine what could have been. All the would have, could have, and should haves rise to the top and all you’re left with is the possibilities. Mimi Greene’s latest single “Imagine” is a poignant, heartstring-pulling track that highlights the longing that follows an end– whether that be a relationship, a friendship, or any bond that’s been broken. Poignant and decorated with a gentle, twinkling piano, this track will be immensely relatable to any of you who have been through heartbreak. The first thing I noticed about “Imagine” was how soft it was. I love songs about heartbreak, and there’s always something special about the tracks that highlight the gentleness of that sadness. The piano really completes it, in my opinion; the soundscape keeps things simple, just as the sensation of sorrow is sometimes likewise. “Imagine” really makes you feel that heartache, especially if you’ve been through something similar to what the narrator sings about. There’s a moment in the track when the narrator says, “I hope that you’re listening,” and I feel like that truly exemplifies what “Imagine” is about. You hope that the person hears you, and you hope that the person reaches out, but that’s all it really is: hope. I absolutely adore the melancholy of “Imagine,” and it’s all driven home even harder by Mimi’s tender voice. No matter if you’re listening to the song because you relate to it or not, “Imagine” is a beautiful example of looking back at a relationship and wishing that things could have gone differently. Ellise’s latest single is a gut-wrenching, yet infectious track that reels the listener in from the very first note. “Her” describes the singer's unrelenting jealousy and her inability to stop comparing herself to others. The song is the third release from her upcoming EP, Bedroom Confessional. The project is an anthological piece of art where each song focuses on a different emotion, ones often hidden in the darkest parts of our minds. “Her” homes in on envy. Throughout the track, Ellise confesses her desire to be like her muse, to the point that it has become obsessive. In the first verse, she opens the song with the lines: “Guilty pleasure // Know you met Her last November // You’re together // But boy I bet I know Her better.” This instantly gives the listener an insight on the situation, bringing up images of Ellise stalking her ex’s new girlfriend on social media, dating back years before they met. Her fascination has cemented it’s deep into the artist, refusing to relinquish Ellise from the thought of being her. About the song, the singer admits that the song is not about one particular person, but more of the overarching idea of another woman. When looking at the lyrics on Apple Music, “Her” was capitalized, signifying that the subject is not one specific person, but an entire entity itself - the subject of Ellise’s envy. Once again, the singer crafted a flawless masterpiece that explores deeper, darker themes than are typically touched on in pop music.  Ellise is known for her dark-pop soundscapes. However, the singles on Bedroom Confessional deviate from the style, going for a more retro-inspired dream-pop soundscape. “Her” begins with a whimsical synth intro that sets the nostalgic atmosphere. After a couple measures, this instrumentation stops, and the steady beat and Ellise’s angelic vocals begin, lulling the listener in. In the pre-chorus, the song builds, and the whimsical intro is reintroduced, creating a stunning dynamic. This continues throughout the song, keeping the audience entranced by the ethereal production. The song concludes with a passionate outro where she utilizes heavy vocal effects to emphasize the desperation and intensity behind the lyrics. Just like her previous singles, “Her” solidifies Ellise as an ever-evolving artist who consistently delivers immaculate art.  Ellise is a dark-pop singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. There are many exciting feelings during the development of a new relationship. Anticipation, anxieties, and attraction all swirl together to create the perfect combo, which is heightened at the exact moment before the first contact is made. Standing face to face, eye to eye, wondering who will make the first move and initiate that first kiss, wondering how right it will feel to close the space between each other. This moment is what Dani Stocksdale explores in her new single “Bug Eyes”, released March 18th. This track is indie pop, with a similar sound to that of MUNA and Gracie Abrams. The track opens with Stocksdale describing the scene unfolding in front of her. They are face to face, noses touching, and she feels like there is nothing between them, not even daylight. She explains her fears that his wingspan alone could “eat me whole / and swallow my pride / spit out the bones / leave me with nothing”. As excited as she is for this moment, she is riddled with anxiety about the cons, which she circles back to in the bridge. For now, we continue to the chorus, where the soundscape dims to give a clear focus on Stocksdale’s point of view through a simple lyric: “I wanna be more / I wanna be yours”. The rest of the track’s soundscape holds the quick strumming of a guitar and swirling harmonies, but the harmonies are cut in the chorus to amplify her vocal line. Dani Stocksdale is a 22 year old pop artist based in New York City. She is an independent artist and creates her music based on her own life experiences, allowing herself to be honest and raw with her writing. She attended NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, which helped her hone her craft and focus on her goals of creating “lyrics that tease meanings, and pair them with catchy melodies”.
