As a child, you believe in the natural goodness of the world. You believe that those around you are kind and gentle and you trust in strangers. A key sign of growing up is when these positive connotations turn sour, and you begin to realize that maybe not all is as it seems, and even those you thought were saints have a darker side. Fison’s first release “Daughter of a Good Man” details this change of heart. She explains that she used to believe her father meant well. She used to go out of her way to try to prove it, and yet she was wrong. And so her ideals crumble, and she has to live with the realization that a pillar of her world was not the shiny man he was made out to be.

The track begins with an indie electric guitar vibe, as Fison’s breathy and light voice trails in. The first verse details the lies she used to believe about her life and her father, how “He only means well”. The track blends smoothly into the chorus, in which she laughs at her own efforts and says they “didn’t go so well”. In the chorus, she sings “And I’ve got nothing to show / For all of the years I wasted / Years I thought I was the daughter of a good man”. She has finally accepted the harsh realization that the life she thought she had and the world around her is not as it seemed. The outro repeats the line “I’m the daughter of a good man” over vocalizations and harmonies, mimicking how the thought is presented in her own head: swirling around and around in circles in a mocking, melancholic tone.

Fison is a young singer-songwriter based in London. An independent artist, this is Fison’s debut release, and already has almost 8,000 streams. She intends to make music that “blends pop with soft rock textures and intimate lyrics”. She is a British-Italian artist who grew up in Florence, Italy, and uses this duality within her music. Fison’s lyrics explain “a sense of duality between places, identities and emotional states”, and she uses her own experiences to craft her words. Her soundscape is inspired by artists like MJ Lenderman and Lizzy McAlpine, and has a similar sound to that of Ethel Caine and Phoebe Bridgers.
