Review: "Hear Me" - Summer Brennan

"Hear Me" is the newest single by musician Summer Brennan, a song about the current political state of the world; more specifically, about how it has affected younger people. The cycle of a younger generation being underestimated by an older one has repeated for centuries, so when it comes to speaking up about what's right, Gen Z is almost never taken seriously. Men have been destroyed by toxic masculinity, which in turn has ruined their image of women. Women are controlled and terrorized by men through hatred. The line "Stay on the phone" is so powerful because it depicts the fear of walking alone or just being anywhere in public as a woman knowing what men are capable of.

Throughout "Hear Me", the song crescendos from acoustic, to pop, to alternative rock in just under three and a half minutes. Its symbolic to anger building up over time as young people are still in the direction of harm due to men and the government. During each chorus, a drone-like synth is persistent in the background. When the song develops a beat, it is concurrent with strings, and then an electric guitar is slowly introduced before it envelops the production and "Hear Me" becomes a full-out rock ballad. Brennan provides her astonishing vocals on the song, and the emphasis put on the line "Can you hear me now" truly encapsulates the overall message of the song.

Summer Brennan is a musical artist from California. She has received many accolades, including one for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. She was also once featured on the cover of Artenzza magazine. Besides "Hear Me", she has released other amazing songs, such as "Nowhere", "Billboard City", and "Smoke & Mirrors". She began writing and making music shortly before releasing her debut single "White Sandy Beach of Hawaii" in 2021. Not only is Brennan a songwriter, but she also plays a part in producing her music, something most pop artists don't do unless they are incredibly talented.
