Dawn's lyricism immediately pulls you into her internal world. Inside, you experience the feelings of love, loss, and healing that is "Thanks For Asking." For many of us, we have experienced falling in love or crushing on someone. We can get hooked on the butterflies in our stomachs at the mere thought of someone. But too often, it's the idea of someone that you fall for, rather than how they truly are. Dawn shows this very idea with the lyric: "I miss the idea of you / But the reality stole him / I don't speak about you now / Cuz I've exhausted every option." Once you come to the realization that you romanticized everything, all those butterflies turn to moths, and you are left with a less than glamorous reality. The aftermath of such a heartbreaking experience can leave you progressively more upset, no matter how much time has passed. The lyric, "I tasted the loss / Like blood in my mouth / Now it's been years / And I can't spit it out," hits the hardest, showing how what was once love unfortunately soured.
Estella Dawn's voice is the standout of the song. Her vocals are powerful and vulnerable. Just one note and one word from her mouth sounds like a grand confession that leaves you reeling. She is undeniably a powerhouse, and her voice reminds me of RAYE's. The sound of the guitar in the background starts off soft. Its a juxtaposition to her strong vocals, creating a balance of vulnerability and power. "Thanks For Asking" sounds like it belongs on the soundtrack of a coming-of-age movie. It's the kind of song that you instantly connect with, its sound wrapping you up tightly in different emotions.
Estella Dawn is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist born in New Zealand. She is currently based in San Diego. She writes, records, and produces everything herself. She is genre-fluid, fearlessly honest, and impossible to pin down. With over 15 million streams across her catalog and a growing global fanbase, her music spans various genres. Dark pop, alt-country, indie folk, and everything in between. Standout tracks include "Detached," "You Didn't Text Me," "Conversations," and he Radiohead cover "Creep." Her latest single "Thanks For Asking" is a sardonic, gut-punch breakup song about the grief that refuses to disappear. Follow Estella Dawn to keep up with her future songs and projects!
