- Review: "Forget About Me" - Annie Anna
"Forget About Me" by Annie Anna is a nostalgic tune that pays homage to the vastness of the world around us, putting identity on the backburner to admire nature and the passing of time. This song shares several themes with common ideas in country music, while also reflecting its sound. The lyrics soak up the comfort of memories, and bring up images like an "open road". The song begins by taking some beautiful natural imagery with the words, "underneath a crystal sky, winds rustle through the trees", before the narrator explains their reflections. Themes of nihilism come through the speaker's understanding that their past and future are so much smaller than the world around them. The chorus is a testament to these ideas, ending with the words: "this world kept on turning and forgot about me". The word "forgot" does not hold any sort of sadness, rather it seems resolute, matter-of-fact, and almost comforting. The speaker goes on to continuously ground themself in nature, even in memory, like in the second verse with the phrase "the summer of '16, mountains rushing by so quickly". While the lyrics mention people in the speakers' life, the only specifics that come are in the details of the landscape or scenery. The Earth seems to be the most powerful soul in this song. The sound of "Forget About Me" is down-to-earth, with simple piano and acoustic guitar producing a whole and heartening tune. The instrumentals are a blend of warm strumming and note patterns that add an uplifting and soothing mood to the song. Annie's voice brings alive the folky comfort of this track, as it is bright and feminine, with a little bit of a country twang. She sings with a reflective tone, as though she is telling a story. As I listened to the song, I found I swayed along to the catchy tune. The sound brings a warming sense of nostalgia that can resonate differently for everyone. For me, it made me feel grounded and like I should listen to this song on a walk in the sun. Annie Anna is a Kansas-born, Arizona-based folk-rock and alternative singer and songwriter. She has been surrounded by music all her life, as her Dad sang and played guitar. This inspired her to pursue music, starting with learning piano. Eventually, she learned guitar and took every opportunity to perform from coffee shops to a morning show. She opened for AJR after winning a singing competition as she studied engineering. Annie continues to work on her career in engineering as she performs and releases music. - Review: "SIRIUS" - Jamie Michael
"SIRIUS", Jamie Michael's new debut single, is an energizing message of self-love. The first verse shows a realization: that the narrator deserves to be treated the way they treat others. The verse ends with a powerful message, saying "wanted to keep the peace, but I got this war in me". This is a call to action as the speaker follows a journey to self-actualization, realizing sometimes it's better to be loud about who you are and what you need. The pre-chorus demonstrates the clarity that comes when people who love you leave your life. The song doesn't touch on why these people leave, because it truly isn't about anyone but the speaker. This is their story, and the chorus puts the spotlight on their power with the image of light and fire as the embodiment of themself. The lyrics describe the speaker as "shining bright like Sirius." This comparison to a star, one that has been recognized since near the beginning of documented history, truly represents the speaker as timeless and epic. "SIRIUS" also emphasizes the idea that sometimes the best thing to do for yourself is be alone with words like, "with the space between us, I'm finally where I'm meant to be." A sense of resolution comes from the bridge, as the lyrics make it clear that the speaker will forever fight for herself. Bright electronic music opens the song with bouncy note patterns. These upbeat, shining sounds cut out as they are replaced by a deeper, ethereal sequence to compliment Jamie's vocals as they begin. The verses are recited slowly, like each word is glowing. Her voice is feminine and whole, giving a fluidity to the increasingly intricate electronic notes. The instrumentals sound almost like a musical spaceship. Percussion hypes up the tune, in an energizing drum fill of different beats, until the chorus comes in with a grounding pulse beat. Also through the chorus, the speed picks up and the vocals get higher, adding even more dimension to the song. Background vocals repeat the word "Sirius" at the end of the chorus, adding a floaty and ethereal layer to the word. Transitioning into the next verse involves a whooshing sound and bubbly scales, adding to the otherworldly mood. The bridge plays around with instrumentals, starting with minimal percussion, and giving a focus to the independence of the lyrics, as the instrumentals build, bringing the power and energy from the words to life. The song ends with layered vocals and instrumentals, including Jamie belting the final lyrics "blinding from afar". The boldness of the climbing notes in the very last word profoundly ends the song. Jamie Michael is a Montreal-based pop singer who draws on musical theatre and R&B to create her art. Her style is influenced by many pop artists including Ariana Grande and Bruno Mars . She aspires to bring self-love to listeners, and "SIRIUS" is a prime display of that goal brought to life. Her musical influences came early, having grown up in a Filipino household, and singing at family events. Jamie has been playing piano since she was 5, and spent her youth singing in choirs. In 2020, she turned to music as a creative outlet to cope with her mother's passing, and has since fully embraced songwriting. She majored in Professional Music at Berklee College of Music , and continues to work on her musical talents. With self-love-driven motivation and an uplifting sound, Jamie’s music is bound to fill listeners' hearts. - Review: "passenger princess" - Randy Beth
Randy Beth's new release "passenger princess" is a contemplative song that pulls listeners along on a drive toward peace. The idea of driving definitively carries the themes of the song: control, movement, progression, and independence. From the very first verse, the song expresses hesitance. The speaker fears the end of their relationship. They express a willingness to take control to keep them together, saying "for you I'll take the driver's seat with no hesitation, and I'd drive us both home". The pre-chorus gives the sense of being lost and paints a picture of staying still with the words "faded hearts on foggy windows, driving just driving to stall". This captures a moment, a simple romantic act of drawing on car windows, while a light is shone on the impermanence of the action. The chorus tells of the end, using the break of a car as a concrete image of a full stop. Relief is felt in the words of the bridge, with the words "stuck here at this red light, but this time my chest's not tight." The song ends with the same hesitance that began the song, still clinging to the relationship. The lyrics are flexible to interpretation as throughout, there is a contrasting pattern of holding on and letting go. This means that depending on how the lyrics resonate with you, you can determine what it is exactly that gives the speaker the sanctuary of the red light found in the bridge of the song. Light, bubbly piano and electronic instrumentals flutter the opening of the song, and at their end, the gentle sustained sounds that arise give an ambience of glowing clarity like they have been lifted out of water. Randy's vocals are smooth and low throughout the verse and chorus, and lift higher in the chorus. Soft vocalizing and interesting sound trills, like high-pitched electronic note patterns, decorate the song. The bridge features the same low and comforting vocal tones as the verse, along with backup vocals whispering in gently hypnotic rounds. Randy's soft vocals and the same glowing ambient sounds close the song, bringing a soothing reminiscence to the final notes. Randy Beth is a singer and songwriter based in New York. She began writing songs during the COVID-19 pandemic, and released her debut song “make a home” in 2021. The song, which features so othing acoustic guitar and Randy's beautiful vocals, now has an animated video, animated by Aaliya Luthra . Randy uses her songs to reflect, and even though she began putting out music in the past four years, Randy has been a creative performer since childhood. She performed in musical theatre, and eventually went on to study acting. You can buy merch for “passenger princess” on Etsy, and keep up to date with her music by checking out the links below. - Concert Review: Porter Robinson - Smile! :D Tour in Orlando, FL
On September 6th, 2024, EDM/pop artist, Porter Robinson graced Orlando with his brand new show, and let me tell you, it's a ride! The Smile! :D tour is a journey through Porter's past and present eras, bringing all the magic of his previous tours with tons of extra added fun. The show took us through a range of emotions, from candy-sweet happiness to nostalgic tears. But what makes this one so special? What separates the Smile! :D tour from the shows of the past? Let's dive in and talk about everything you can expect before you snag those tickets! First of all, I'd like to open this review by saying this is the only concert you'll see with a giant inflatable cat on stage. It's also probably the only concert you'll see with a giant blue solo cup on stage, oh yeah, and some giant glowing orbs. Top it all off with confetti cannons and Ericdoa's entire bedroom on stage for the opener and you've got a whole carnival going on. This show uses so many endearing little props that really set it apart from a typical concert. The set is designed with an enormous pink billboard in front of a larger screen, creating the illusion of a grand city behind the full band. The visuals that come with this setup are beyond enchanting, creating some of the most immersive and playful ways to interpret Porter's music. Most of the lyrics are shown on the screen, prompting everyone to sing along. So, let's talk about the music! This show (aside from a select few Nurture performances) is the first time Porter has been backed by a full band for a tour. Having seen him solo many times before, I can truly confirm that the band adds something really special to the show. Everything is louder, brighter, and more alive. The band's bass player, Margot, is featured as a vocalist in several portions of the show and she is absolutely phenomenal. The main guitarist, Rafa, rips out a wicked guitar solo as well, making our heads spin with his skills. It's clear that this group has amazing synergy and hours of practice together. They bring so much vibrance to Porter's stage and keep that energy up throughout every song they play. The show's setlist begins with "Knock Yourself Out XD" and flows through each of the tracks on the new album, save for one, but we'll talk about that later. Of course, the show can't end there. It only gets better. After the Smile portion of the show, we're treated to bite-size versions of both the Nurture and Worlds sets. This feels especially thoughtful, as it gives new fans the chance to experience something they may have missed in the past. While this was my sixth Porter Robinson concert, it was my partner's first, and it was so wonderful for him to get to experience a part of Nurture the way I saw it. Beyond that, as a fan who came in around 2019, it was amazing for me to get to see part of Worlds! Overall, there are so many little details and moments in this show that I could write a novel on and it still wouldn't be enough. All of the little references, jokes, and joys of being in this fandom are wrapped up in this incredible show layered in the shiniest pink paper you've ever seen. Unfortunately, all things must come to an end, so let's talk about the encore. After the Worlds section of the concert ends, you know it still isn't over. The billboard comes alight again with the character, Rin, from the "Shelter" music video. We see the orbs glow as she presses buttons on her tablet, playing that iconic hook we all know and love. You can't have a Porter show without "Shelter". But it's still not over! For the final song, Porter leaves the stage for a split second and returns with his signature black and red wings, sending us off with Smile! :D's featured single, "Cheerleader". This had to be the most intense part of the night because Porter called for a mosh pit during the track. Crazy! We left that night voiceless, covered in confetti, and exhausted, but we had the time of our lives. If you like EDM, pop, rock, or all of the above, this show is for you. If you like crazy cool light shows and immersive set design, this show is for you. If you want to feel like you belong amongst a community of wholesome strangers, this show is for you. It's a party from beginning to end that you won't want to miss. It's definitely more intense than Porter's previous tours, but it brings the same emotion that we all feel as fans and I think that's what it's all about. So, what do you think? Would you go see this show? Let us know on our socials below! Written By Shelbi Baker Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Spotify | TikTok | YouTube *copyright not intended. Fair use act, section 107.

- Review: "Find Me There" - Laura Lederer
Laura Lederer's latest single, Find Me There , is an emotive pop banger that delves into topics of lost love and personal tenacity. Laura conveys an optimistic outlook to her audience, belting out "Just take a deep breath, you know where, where I'll be" before dropping the hook "Go, just go, find me there". Lederer uses her lyricism to paint a picture of sunny days and warm breezes, peppering her listeners with glowing imagery meant to impart the sentiment that brighter days are ahead. Find Me There is the perfect tune to throw on when you're in need of a little self-motivation to get through a tough day. Find Me There opens with smooth chords and Laura's powerful vocals pouring through the speakers. About half a minute in, the beat drops and we hear the track's electric hook for the very first time. These sections make this a tune ready for the club – with a big bassline and four-on-the-floor drumbeat, the energy remains high from start to finish. Lederer's vocals sit nicely on top of the heavy electronic dance instrumentation and really shine through on this song. Find Me There seamlessly blends the emotional storytelling of pop vocals with the rhythmic vibe and heavy synth usage of dance music. New York native, Laura Lederer, just released her fourth single of this year, Find Me There , and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down in 2024. The burgeoning pop starlet explains that her goal is "to bring fresh perspective to the pop genre and seamlessly blend elements of contemporary sound with timeless themes of love, loss and resilience". Her previous three releases – Tell Me Now, All Your Heart, and I Forgive – all boast a similarly energetic pop aura and showcase a growing discography of impressively genuine singles. Laura's authenticity can be felt in her music, with the young artist describing her mindset as "I try to infuse every note with genuine emotion, inviting you to embrace vulnerability with me". - Review: "Downstairs" - Emma Miller
Emma Miller’s song “Downstairs” from her second EP, Artifacts, uses profoundly minimal lyrics to convey a fear of change. The song features the concept of levels as a metaphor for the possibilities that weigh on the speaker. Going downstairs represents loneliness, and in the last verse, the speaker expresses “I’m scared I’ll be forgotten”. Listeners can feel the vulnerability in these lyrics, connecting with the feeling of identity. In plain and raw words, the statement asks who am I to others? The idea of being hidden or separated is contrasted by the notion of climbing high, which represents risk. In this internal struggle over moving upwards or down, solace comes from the stationary nature of night. The lyrics portray this time as a comfort where “dreaming is easy”. Sometimes it feels better to just be, instead of measuring the possible consequences of what happens next. Through its gentle words and deeply personal voice, "Downstairs" lets listeners know that they are not alone in worrying about the future. "Downstairs" uses a haunting softness in its vocals and instrumentals that truly bring out the depth of the lyrics. A slow and simple sustained piano chord progression repeats through the song, bringing a somber tone through its minor key. Emma's vocals are dark and velvety. Each word has texture in this patient recitation that makes the meaning atmospheric. The melody is low through the verse, and her voice pulled at my heartstrings with its resonating emotion. During the chorus, the vocals climb high, gaining an airy and hypnotic quality. This change between low and high melody further conveys the sentiment of the song. The bridge has sustained synth chords along with Emma's breathy and low vocals which provide a warmth to the sound. Emma Miller is a singer and songwriter from Scotland whose alternative-folk music has reached listeners across the globe, who travel from far and wide to hear her perform. Her music is available for purchase in vinyl at her shows, offering a supreme listening experience to truly embrace her ethereal voice. Emma will be performing live shows in London and Glasgow this season, remaining accessible to fans all over the world with a TikTok Live concert as well. - Review: "boy like u" - Bryan Munar
“boy like u” by Bryan Munar encapsulates the feeling of falling in love with an upbeat and groovy tune. The song uses cosmic language—sun, orbit, and atmosphere—to represent the all-consuming feelings the narrator has for his partner. The second verse uses the words “you’re the moon, I’m the tide. Drag me into your undertow”. This metaphor uses great and constant natural forces to depict the deep connection the singer has with his partner. The chorus begins “in your blue eyes, swimming in the middle”, and assigns emotional attachment to color. It represents openness and love, as the lyrics further weave the word into the verse and chorus. Ambient and eclectic synth sounds open this song with arpeggios. They emulate sounds like a xylophone, hollow bamboo instrument, and sound pad, before sustained chords bring a warming depth to the introduction. Muted laughter sounds, then drums kick in and Bryan begins to sing. His voice is light and soft. It is breathy at the beginning of the verses, and rounds out near the end, allowing his range to be heard on meaningful words. The vocals climb to reach a falsetto in the chorus for a glowing sound. No doubt the chorus is catchy with its floaty and light-hearted groove. An instrumental interlude of happy synth sounds precedes a softer version of the chorus where the instrumentals are ambient. It complements the romantic and gentle sentiments before Bryan’s voice climbs an octave on the last word. The chorus repeats with layered vocals that resonate in a way that could inspire anyone to get up and dance. Bryan discovered his voice and love for music by singing in churches when he was a little kid. At the age of five, he performed at a one in California, marking his first musical gig. He graduated from UC Berkeley in computer science, but musical theatre further piqued his interest. His journey moved on to explore different cities’ musical theatre scenes, eventually moving to New York. He has another song out called “never asked” which was released in January, and it’s an emotionally loaded break-up song with the same creative flow as “boy like u”. Bryan has collaborated with many talented artists, including Liamani Segura and Wanya Morris . Make sure you follow the links below and keep an ear out for his review pop EP in 2025! Currently, he has the role of Orpheus, touring North America in Hadestown . Written By Hanna Kowal FOLLOW BRYAN: Instagram | Spotify | TikTok | Facebook | YouTube
- Review: "anesthesia" - Alexa Valentino
“anesthesia” by Alexa Valentino is a song riddled with the intense hurt of someone who has been in a toxic relationship. The lyrics start off by showing the narrator’s backslide into the relationship, along with a cry for help: “lock myself in the bathroom, pills on the floor just to make you listen”. This is a distressing and extreme image, and the rest of the song shows just how the person got to this point. Her whole life became about making sure her partner was okay, and that burden is simply too much to bear. In the second verse, the lyrics “push away everybody so I could be free to console you” are a testament to the way being in such a dependent relationship is isolating. The speaker would rather be sedated than break up with her partner. Although the relationship consumes her life and is constant emotional labor, the narrator has built a life for them together in her mind. Even so, she knows she has to end it for her own sake. Her partner certainly does not prioritize her, and the relationship has separated her from her friends. The lyrics “if I’m lucky I’ll finally break the curse of saving everybody when I’m at my worst” express the narrator’s want to be there for herself. Through the pain, this thought is a step towards healing. It is recognition that she deserves to be a priority. A slow, high, and gentle piano melody—the same as the chorus—opens the song. Each note rings out so softly, they almost sound broken. The piano glides into sustained chords as gentle acoustic guitar joins in. Alexa’s breathy and soft voice holds an intimate quality like a whisper. She has a feminine and comforting voice which sounds reflectively expressive with each word. The vocals through the end of the verse, while beautifully tuneful, have a fragility to them as though each word is infused with meaning. Alexa’s vocals are bold and rounded through the chorus, and all tones of a whisper are gone as her voice moves through emotional high notes. Percussion is gentle through the second verse, and builds onwards. Alexa is singing her heart out on the bridge, complimenting the independence featured in the lyrics. The song ends with a melodic and emotional soft note with vocals and piano. Alexa Valentino is a singer, songwriter, and actress based in New York. She won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Song of The Year in 2022 for her song “ Dear Love ”. She has five years of experience in teaching piano, and her skills as a pianist are audible in most of her songs, including “anesthesia”. With sweet, passionate vocals and vibrant instrumentals, Alexa’s emotional tunes easily resonate with listeners. Her music gets personal, drawing on her experiences with borderline personality disorder, creating genuine and moving representation of mental health struggles through her art. The artist has performed on the stage and on the screen, including on NBC’s “Ministry of Evil, The Twisted Cult of Tony Alamo”, and in the web-series “The Mortician” that can now be found on Amazon Prime. - Review: "boyfriend material" - young friend
Canadian musician young friend sings about rejecting the idea of romance in his newest single "boyfriend material". He believes he would not be a good boyfriend, as he does not want a relationship due to his commitment issues. He also does not think a relationship could work out because he has no romantic interest for the subject of this song. Following this, he claims he is unfit to do things boyfriends would typically do, such as write songs for the special someone in their life (because he is a musical artist), when young friend says, "No, I don't sing about you when I'm playing this guitar". These lyrics summarize "boyfriend material" as an anti-love song. In contrast to the lyrics, the production of "boyfriend material" takes a look into a flashback of the California sound genre that was popular in the 1960s. Originated by the Beach Boys , one of the members, Brian Wilson , was partly inspired by 1940s and 50s pop classics to form the genre. This song definitely takes notes from that, with its mix of old school pop and rock. The static guitar and distorted guitar bridge in the song add a touch of modernity, making "boyfriend material" original and genre-bending. Combined with young friend's insanely talented voice, easily shifting from his chest voice to his head voice in the chorus, this song is literal pop perfection. young friend is an indie artist from Vancouver, Canada. He takes inspiration from artists such as Frank Ocean, musically and aesthetically. He is currently going on tour in the west coast of the US. In 2019, he released his debut EP yours truly, , and in 2022, he released his project HOW DID WE GET HERE? . In addition to "boyfriend material", he has also released other incredible singles, including "PINCH ME", "met this girl on the internet", and "feral canadian scaredy cat" (he also went on a tour based on this title in 2023). He has over 344,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and his most popular song, "PINCH ME", has garnered more than 41,000,000 streams. young friend is a very talented artist who makes amazing music! - Review: "The Fall of Eden" - Skye Paula x Od
Music partners Skye Paula and Od flip back to the first page of The Bible in their new single "The Fall of Eden". Paula starts the song off with "Long ago // There was a man // A snake // And a choice" to show how irresistibility has persisted ever since the beginning of time - its metaphorical for the strong feelings her and her love interest have for each other. In regards to the line "Maybe there's a double meaning", Paula compares how Eve was unable to resist eating the forbidden apple with being unable to resist liking or falling in love with someone. Paula refers to herself as the apple, and the person she is talking about symbolically as Eve. Produced by Od, "The Fall of Eden" is a chilled and lofi-esque song, with elements of wavering acoustic guitar chords and definitive notes from a bass guitar. The beat compliments the instrumentation with its rhythmic claps, and also features reversed sections. In the chorus, some of those claps are replaced with the sound of an apple being bit. The bridge is a low tone guitar solo, with Od repeating the song's title over it. As for the vocals, him and Paula harmonize together, mainly during the chorus, with Paula singing in a higher register and Od singing in a lower one. Alongside this, a small portion of "The Fall of Eden" consists of spoken word by Paula, mostly at the beginning of the song. Skye Paula is featured on the artwork for "The Fall of Eden", seemingly taking inspiration from the album cover of Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 by Shakira . Paula has an aesthetic that revolves around and consists of the beauty and vastness of nature and greenery, present on her social medias. In addition, she also has released other amazing songs, such as "Mr Sandman (SYML)", "The Best", and "Demon's Gleam". "The Fall of Eden" is the first song her and Od have made together. Although Paula is from the UK, they were both able to create the single online from their own countries of residence. Od also has a new song, "Calling On The Beast", coming out on September 13, 2024. Paula and Od are both great and very talented musicians! Written By Ashley Adams FOLLOW SKYE PAULA: Instagram | Spotify FOLLOW OD: Instagram | Spotify
