Lauren Presley’s latest release, "AMERICAS SWEETHEARTS", is a feminist anthem which offers an expression of the mental excursions which femininity presents.  She lists off categorically, like a set of rules, the standards for womanhood in today’s world.  These each represent a subconscious “requirement” for being a woman which echo through their minds on a daily basis.  The sheer amount of them is overwhelming, but Presley doesn't stop there, to make it even more so, each rule she states is immediately followed by another which undermines it.  Every goal for women is in conflict with another.  This, of course, is well known, being spoken of since the beginning of feminism.  But, every ounce of the song is drenched in modernity.  She presents classic topics, but only those which hold the most relevance to today’s world.  Most of these standards, for instance, present the standards of a woman within her career.  She explicitly references the old school feminism she references, and with praise.  “Used to speak up now I think we’re listening too much” she sings, regarding the new wave of feminism as the slight current it is- compared to the tsunami which came before.  She brings the listener back to the basics, those rules which govern women, that are known to, and that have yet to be overcome, in an attempt to bring the listener back to the basic anger and refusal towards them. The only way to approach such a contextual song is chronologically, so, Presley does so- and in a clever double entendre which calls out to all women.  “We were young once making big plans” she states passionately, referencing not only the literal youth and young women’s ambition, but also the past of feminism itself.  In growing up women are crushed out of these ambitions, and in passing time, the historical desires of women have been similarly smothered.  Her voice presents another element of this new wave twist.  She is a pop perfect vocalist, but her lyrics offer a nearly punk element.  Perhaps the Riot Grrrl movement never died, it simply moved to an unexpected but necessary genre: pop.  Her production certainly seems to imply so.  The instrumentals are metallic with prominent percussion and extended notes which are just short of being electric guitar solos.  And yet, it's not at all acoustic.  Every aspect of Lauren Presley’s creation has accomplished what she set out to, subtly transforming age old topics into something fresh and palatable. She cleverly presents women’s topics into a woman centered genre and allows girls to feel heard within their own scene instead of attempting to translate it towards a stereotypically masculine sound.  It's difficult to make rebelliousness heard through such a gorgeous, feminine, voice but Presley pulls it off magnificently.  Lauren Presley was born in Texas and is now based in Nashville.  Her first release “A Little Longer” is only two years old yet she’s already amassed nearly thirty thousand listeners to date. JESSIA’s new track “Different People '' is 2024’s new breakup anthem. It’s about the intrusive thoughts that inevitably come with the end of a relationship. As if the breakup itself isn’t difficult enough, JESSIA also accurately depicts the vicious cycle of emotions you deal with that make you wonder what your ex is doing, if they’re seeing someone else, or if they’re thinking about you as much as you’re thinking about them. The beat gains momentum, and Liv delivers a memorable line that leads to the bass drop. “Your toxic touch, babe, is radioactive, you call it love but to me it’s attachment, cuz I still romanticize our goodbye”. Tate Sedar’s ability to take acoustic instruments and blend them with digital sounds makes this a classic post-EDM production. Liv Kennedy’s infectious vocals adds to the emotion of what she’s singing about. It captures the torment that a toxic relationship can create for people even when the relationship has been in the rear-view mirror for a long time. “I think about you sometimes, I ask myself why I still romanticize our old life”. Lines like these really help deliver dating anecdotes that the average listener can relate to. I don’t think y’all understand how loud I screamed when I found out these two submitted a song for review. I’m a big fan of both Paul Russell and Meghan Trainor, so I hopped on the opportunity to review their latest song immediately. And what an incredible song it is. “Slippin’” is a song about unrequited love, and wondering why the person you love doesn’t also have feelings for you. This is a pretty upbeat and energetic song, and I think the lyrics are not only relatable, but powerful! Trainor comes in around the middle of the song, and I think her voice blends beautifully with Russell’s. I especially love the start of the chorus, when Russell and Trainor start to sing together, and they belt out “Why don’t you love me / You said I’m funny / Guess not enough, babe / Cause I keep on / Slippin’ through your fingers.” As I mentioned before, this song is very upbeat and energetic! It almost has a sort of jazz style to it. I think the instrument that I heard the most was the trumpet! I don’t hear that in a lot of the music I personally listen to, but I think it paired extremely well with the other instrumentals! I also mentioned earlier how as Russell and Trainor got to the chorus, they would belt out. It was like I could feel their frustration, crying out to their unrequited love “Why don’t you love me?!” Trainor also has a couple of beautiful toward the end of the song, which I was expecting going into this review. But she never fails to impress me every time. Paul Russell is a Dallas-based singer and songwriter, who has achieved an impressive following throughout his career. He first began releasing music in 2018 with the release of his debut single, “Get Back”. To date, he gets over six million streams monthly on Spotify. He has also performed on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, The Graham Norton Show, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I recently reviewed Meghan Trainor's latest album , so I’m excited I got a chance to review this too! Trainor has been releasing music since 2014, and has had an incredible career thus far. When you look up at the sky and see the stars, do you imagine what would have, could have, and should have? In her latest release, Jordyn Sugar’s “Stars in Another Sky” is all about taking chances now and living life to its fullest and, most importantly, for yourself. You’ll pass by people who once knew you but are now worlds apart, stars from a completely different sky– your life no longer revolves around them, but yourself. With a soundscape full of passionate vocals and smooth synth, “Stars in Another Sky” is dynamic in both its message and sound. An energetic and upbeat track with a fun, anthemic vibe, this is the kind of song that makes you excited and inspired to live life to its greatest potential, and hopefully encourages anyone who needs that push to start doing so. “ Stars in Another Sky” feels like a callback to the classic dance pop of the 2010s, all high energy and heartfelt lyrics with just enough melancholy to make you think while you dance. What really makes this track are the instrumentals; a strong, fervent synth is threaded throughout the entirety of this track, growing and shrinking along with Sugar’s passionate vocals. It really sets the tone for the lyrics’ message, and creates an energetic soundscape with a lot of fun movement. One part of the song’s composition I really liked was during the chorus. During it, you can hear little overlaid echoes of Sugar’s voice chanting in the background, as if a crowd is cheering the narrator along. While a small touch, its effect is large in making the song feel even more encouraging and inspiring. But if we’re talking about inspiring, then we should look at the lyrics. I adore the songwriting in “Stars in Another Sky”; it has a nice balance between pensiveness and vibrancy, and nowhere is that more relevant than in the first verse, leading into the chorus. Introducing the song, the narrator describes their wishes and wants for life, and slowly the chorus comes along to sing, “Won’t stop ‘cause I’m gonna do it anyway / I’m not gonna live for anyone but me”. I love the transition between introspection into action, and that realization that you should live for yourself and your happiness, excitement, and enjoyment. “Stars in Another Sky” has everything a perfect pop song should have: a phenomenal soundscape, excellent composition, and fantastic lyrics. Toronto-born artist Jordyn Sugar discovered at an early age that music would forever be part of her life. Self-taught in guitar and piano, by May 2020 Sugar posted her first video on TikTok of her singing, and from there she began to amass a large following on social media. She eventually met the former executive producer and talent manager of Celine Dion, Vito Luprano, and the rest is history. Cassadee Pope The Hereditary Tour in Anaheim Pope kicked off the tour with the Hey Monday song, “Homecoming.” This being the first track held special meaning because this new album signifies the singer's return to her roots in pop-punk. Not only was it a track from her original band, but also a subtle nod to her “homecoming” to the genre. The moment the song began, the crowd erupted and everyone around me was singing along. It was such a pure and beautiful moment amongst fans and Pope, displaying their loyalty to her and her appreciation for us. Throughout the night, she sang well-known singles, new songs, deep cuts, and several Hey Monday tracks. In the middle of her set, the band left the stage leaving Pope with her guitar. This set was a fan service to longtime supporters, as she took this time to perform a medley of all four songs from her self-titled EP. Dedicated fans were emotional, and I almost shed a tear. Pope catered to her fans, rather than the general public, making this tour one of the best I have ever attended. Pope not only performed the medley but also sang a cover of “Complicated” by pop-rock queen, Avril Lavigne . She invited The Foxies’s singer Julia Bullock on stage to perform the song with her. The Foxies are a supporting act for a select number of shows on the tour. After writing two song reviews for the band, I was beyond excited to see them on the lineup for this tour. The two singer’s voices beautifully blended, giving fans a taste of a potential future collaboration. Both Pope and Bullock played Belinda in a recent production of Only Hope: A Musical Tribute to A Walk to Remember, so they made a joke of releasing a joint project called “The Belindas.” After watching this performance, this is my formal request to Cassadee and Julie: please, turn this into a reality. From the powerful “Piano” to the cheeky “FYI,” Pope sang deep cuts and fan favorites that everyone was ecstatic to hear. Her setlist was filled with original tracks, besides the one Avril cover, showcasing her diverse and mesmerizing discography. Even Pope’s energy was captivating, as she always is live. Her shows are “comfort concerts” for me, guaranteeing that I will have a great time and know every single word. Prior to the show, Pope announced to her followers that she had been in the ER with three bulging discs in her neck. As a result, she wouldn’t be going as hard as she normally does to prevent further injury. Despite this, Pope put on one spectacular show showcasing the passion and effort she always puts in — just with less head banging. I was in awe of her ability to compel the audience with just her voice. It takes an insane amount of natural talent to keep an audience engaged, and Pope did not disappoint.
