  • Review: "Cool Kid" - Erika Emerson

Step into a world of understanding and compassion with Erika Emerson’s “Cool Kid”. Emerson hooks the audience in from the very beginning, starting off with a sound bite of her as a child. This not only sets the tone for the overall song but additionally adds a personal touch to an already deeply personal and detailed track. With soft, backing piano and a voice filled with emotion and character, Emerson explores the former relationship she had with herself and how she now perceives that relationship. While exploring struggles, showcased through lines like, “I was ashamed of who I am,” Emerson dives into an opposite response toward the end of the track. Emerson brilliantly connects the relationship with her younger self to the relationship she now has with herself, where she accepts that she doesn’t need to adhere to what others expect/want of her and live the life she wants to live. It’s both inspiring to hear this bond with herself and how it connects with others. “Cool Kid” embodies a message of acceptance, hope, and reality.   While “Cool Kid” is a track that ebbs with emotion, with Emerson’s voice being the torch bearer. Her deeper, raw register brings these lyrics to life and is the true source of power behind “Cool Kid”. Going from acceptance to conflict, then to resolution, it feels as though you’re witnessing the pages of a personal journal unfold before your eyes. As a person who struggled with accepting myself and my identity while growing up, this song evokes strong resonation while still being completely separate and personal. While immersing myself in the song, I attempted to pinpoint an artist to compare Emerson with and came out unsuccessful. Emerson’s songwriting, as well as the emotion behind her voice, is something unique and incomparable. Even if you cannot relate to these lyrics, “Cool Kid” is an entirely human song that can pleasantly touch any life.   Erika Emerson is a queer artist raised in Berlin, Germany, with roots in the UK. She incorporates writing into her life as an outlet to channel empowerment of herself, as well as to connect with others by being vulnerable. Her voice reflects the emotions she puts into her music, changing at a moment’s notice from seemingly raw & brittle to powerful and full-bodied. She focuses on connecting with listeners through shared struggles and aims to make people feel comforted and accompanied in their lives. Based in Germany, Emerson booked a 2024 tour including multiple venues across the country. She has recently stepped into doing live shows and loves to connect with fans and expand the relationship she has with musicians she works with. Emerson loves to additionally connect with fans through social media, reaching out to thank personal messages and spreading messages of hope through interactions surrounding her music. • Review: "on-call girl" - India Thieriot

"on-call girl" by India Thieriot is a powerpop song that expresses the singer-songwriter's passionate feelings of love and wanting. Production-wise and lyrically, this song is as if Thieriot took the butterflies you get when you first develop feelings for someone and formed them into an energetic anthem that many can relate to. Thieriot details how she is unable to stop thinking about her love interest, and in turn, makes her whole life revolve around him. Her first impression of him lead her to quickly fall head over heels, causing her to compare him to God. Thieriot calls herself his "on-call girl" because she wants to be with him all the time. Two different synths are concurrent with one another - a low ethereal tone, and a powerful high-pitched dance synth. Combined with syncopated drums and their instrumentation, as well as Thieriot's distinctive voice, "on-call girl" is a prime example of what pop music should be. Unique and iconic musical elements are presented in this sonically cheerful tune, such as the melody of the synths changing throughout the song, and the spoken bridge, where the volume of the production dips, only to rise again. The up-tempo vibes of this song manage to encapsulate the New York night life, where Thieriot is based as a musician. India Thieriot moved to New York City to pursue her career writing and singing her music. Her music style is alike to other one-of-a-kind artists, including MARINA and Chappell Roan . She is incredibly talented, and has made other great songs alongside "on-call girl", such as "Do You Remember Me Now?", "Take Some Space", and "Montage". She started releasing music in 2016, and since then has collaborated with the music artists Thando and JusSke on their song "God Complex". Thieriot has an amazing discography and is deserving of much more recognition. Written By Ashley Adams FOLLOW INDIA THIERIOT: Instagram | Spotify  | TikTok  | Apple Music  | YouTube

  • EP Review: "Real Love" - HAPPIE

Photo Credits: https://www.shervinfoto.com/ Memphis, Tennessee native indie-pop artist HAPPIE, also known as Happie Hoffman, has just released her highly anticipated sophomore solo EP, "Real Love" which features four tracks that explore the complex and diverse feelings of love, from family bonds all the way to the good and bad of romance! TRACKLIST Shooting Star Close Real Love Easy HAPPIE officially started her musical journey in 2016 when she was part of the indie folk duo, Eric & Happie in which they did a modern twist on traditional Jewish music, after all, Happie was the cantor in one of the U.S.'s largest Reform Jewish congregations. In 2022, HAPPIE decided to go solo, transitioning more into the pop world and released her debut EP, "Heartbreak Season" which landed her a feature on GRAMMY.com and gained praise from publications like SPIN , Under The Radar , and The Big Takeover . "Heartbreak Season" focused on the exploration of romantic relationships and independence. HAPPIE's sound has been compared to the likes of alternative pop artists such as Maggie Rogers and Lana Del Rey , as well as emotional ballad singers like Adele and John Legend . Just in these past two years going solo, HAPPIE has managed to gain over 100k Spotify monthly listeners and over one million streams. Now taking things to the next level, we have HAPPIE's second EP, "Real Love" which features the heartfelt leading single dedicated to her father, "Shooting Star". Close Opening up the EP, we have "Close" the second single to come before the EP release. Have you ever heard the saying, "so close, yet so far away" ? The song "Close" is the embodiment of that saying, and is about being in a relationship with someone who could be physically right next to you but they are so emotionally disconnected that it's like they're not even there. All you want is for them to open up to you, and you find yourself hoping that one day something will click and you'll get that closeness you've been searching for with them - although, deep down you know that is very well might not happen. It's a very heartbreaking situation to go through, and is something many can relate to. Paired with ringing acoustic guitar and soulful background vocals, this minimalistic indie track is meant to pull at your heartstrings through it's emotional lyricism and dark harmonies. Real Love Next, we have the title track and final single release, "Real Love". Accompanied by a music video that features a dance choreographed and performed by the Hollywood Ballet , "Real Love" touches on the subject of how no relationship is perfect, but if you truly love each other, you can put your differences aside to make things work. It's like that old saying, "true love conquers all", HAPPIE sings, "if it's real love, then let's really love and let go" . Being in a relationship long-term is really hard; fights happen, but when you love someone, you'll do anything to make sure they're happy. "Real Love" has a really unique, diverse blend of worldly sounds. I hear hints of Latin, Middle-Eastern, and even Celtic tones throughout both the vocal style and the instrumentation. It's a haunting, but beautiful soundscape with respectful nods to many backgrounds. Easy "Easy" is a pure indie-pop track with heavy emphasis on gentle electric guitar and a little bit of a 60's pop/rock tone. "Easy" is about when you get into a relationship that is everything you've ever been looking for. It's effortless, and it feels right, but you're still a little bit on the cautious side of things in fear that at any moment that peace could just stop. HAPPIE sings to this partner, asking them if things could stay this easy forever, because they finally gave her something to believe in and she doesn't want it to end. "Easy" is a catchy song that has a radio-worthy soundscape and relatable lyrics. Shooting Star Released earlier this year as the leading single in anticipation for her EP, and as an early Father's Day gift, "Shooting Star" closes out the "Real Love" EP and is a tribute to HAPPIE's dad who acts a very important and inspirational figure within her life. You can tell when listening to this song how special the bond between HAPPIE and her father is. The emotion is so raw and cathartic; even if you personally don't have a relationship like this, you're able to feel the love emanating from this song within your own heart. The lyrics are a reminder that we don't have a lot of time on this Earth, so we need to enjoy it while we still can. Spend as much time with the one's you love while they are still here, because one day they won't be. "Shooting Star" focuses on a soft mixture of acoustic and electric guitar, mixed with gentle vocals by HAPPIE that make the song sound almost like a lullaby. HAPPIE is such a pure, natural artist that I am so glad to have had the honors of listening to on such a deep level. Her raw, vulnerable emotion that she puts within every detail of her songs, from the vocals to the lyrics, to the way she plays her guitar, is something very rare in music we have today. I love how each song has it's own unique style and story; there's nothing that sounds the same which is something else that makes HAPPIE such a stand-out artist. The ability to create music that connects with a wide range of people and not just a certain niche is an incredible talent to have, and that is what HAPPIE does and she does it effortlessly. If you enjoyed the "Real Love" EP, I highly suggest also listened to her other EP, "Heartbreak Season" and following her below to keep up on her journey to see what she does next! • Review: "Not Mad" - Lila Holler

In a world of heartbreak and trying times, there is simply nothing like a romantic love song. Lila Holler’s newest single “Not Mad” details the adorable story behind two young adults falling in love, and what it feels like to lose yourself in a romantic daydream. The soundscape is sparkling and whimsical, feeling like the first sunny day after a rainstorm. The track starts with an acoustic guitar and faint harmonica, and her voice is light, airy, and clear, all qualities that connect to the wholesome lyrics she sings. The first verse is simplistic, detailing the first day they met and how far they have come, and it quickly leans into the chorus, which has a soft drumbeat layered under harmonizing vocals. Holler’s lyrics are descriptive and adorable, giving the perspective of a young love. In her chorus, she sings, “The loss of my minds in full affect / It’s his eyes, his freckles, his clothes, and his accent / Hands in my hair, can’t get enough of it / Don’t remember falling this hard / But I’m not mad at it”, referencing the title of this track. She loves everything about him, down to the tiny little spots on his cheeks. She goes on to sing, “And he knows all about all the things I hate / Yeah he can calm me down he can keep me sane / I don’t think that I’ll ever be the same / Cause when he touches me it takes away my pain”. She repeats the line “No I'm not mad” multiple times in the last minute, solidifying her statement that she has fallen hard for this boy. Usually, the feelings are something to be wary of, but this time she allows herself to fall fully for him, not even being mad about the consequences. Currently living half in Liverpool, UK, and half in Charlotte, NC, Lila Holler has been creating music since she was 14. She was given a guitar that year, and the rest is history. Her music style blends pop and indie-folk, creating a light and airy vibe while depicting her current life events. Her music has grown up with her, showing growth and maturity. Influenced by artists like The Marias, Phoebe Bridgers, and FKA Twigs and a 2023 Interlochen Arts Academy graduate and Fine Arts Award recipient, Holler clearly has the accolades to support her beautiful work. • Review: "Gone To Bed" - colby!

On colby!'s second single, "Gone To Bed," she proves herself to be an up-and-coming artist to watch out for. Following the success of her debut record "Don't Know What To Say," colby! is back with another dark pop smash. "Gone To Bed" is a piece of chill alt-pop with hints of R&B. It is moody, smooth, and undeniably catchy. Matching the track's dark sound, the lyrics explore an unstable relationship. The chorus surmises the sehigh highs and low lows; "You dropped off roses but then you went straight to bed." It's an intricate portrait of a rocky romance backed by a wonderfully emo instrumental and a powerful vocal performance from colby! Whether you're experiencing heartbreak or just in a mood for some good dark pop, "Gone To Bed" is a perfect listen. colby! has an innate talent for capturing a vibe in her music. She embodies the spirit of alt-pop with her songs' emotional resonance and rawness. Between its downbeat tempo with a to-die-for bassline and colby!'s delicate singing, the track generates a strong sense of moody dark atmosphere. It's hard not to feel everything colby! is while listening. Even more so because colby! writes about such universal topics. A relationship with lacking communication is a situation unfortunately far too common, and the songwriter captures that universal frustration perfectly; "all of the words were blank we had to fill in, you would have told me if I hadn't gone to bed," is a feeling we all know too well. Fans of artists like Billie Eilish or Halsey would find lots to love in "Gone To Bed." Simply put, "Gone To Bed" is an elite sad-girl anthem. colby! gave us a chilly alt-pop song perfect as autumn approaches. At only 14 years old, colby! is already an exceptionally polished artist whose talent and success are only bound to go up. From Fort Worth, Texas, colby! always found solace in the arts from growing up with severe dyslexia. Co-writing and releasing music with her brother, RJ Johnson, colby! now has two officially released songs under her belt, with plenty more planned to come. Her first single, "Don't Know What To Say," made an immediate impact, garnering over 36,000 Spotify downloads and landing on playlists like Spotify's "Local Pulse" and Apple Music's "New In Alternative." Within the week of its release, "Gone To Bed" has already seen similar success with over 12,000 Spotify downloads and 4,000 views on YouTube. Audiences are already finding much to connect with in colby!, and when listening to her music, it is easy to see why; her distinct sound and relatable lyrics are undeniable, and it will be exciting to see where she goes next. • Review: "Love Bomb" - Emily Fields

Emily Fields' latest track, Love Bomb , is the quintessential summer ditty to let your hair down too as you soak in the last few sunny days before fall arrives. Emily conveys a "blast of confidence" through her emotionally charged, energetic lyrics; parallelled by such lines as, "How'd you get me under your spell? So addicted to your heaven and hell, went from 0 to 100 so well" and "I'm due a little f*****g respect" – painting the picture of someone who is lovestruck but also well aware of their own self-worth. Fields cites Taylor Swift, Tina Turner, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston as major influences on her evolving sound – and those influences surely shine through as you listen to her booming vocals. As Emily puts it, Love Bomb is meant to be a song "you can dance to, sing to, and just feel good about, even if you're going through it right now". Love Bomb opens with a plucky synth arpeggio sequence, layered with a fat synth bassline. Emily flexes her dynamic, and at times theatrical (in the best way), vocal delivery in the song's pre-chorus. The track's instrumentation fills out during the hook with synth pads and distant, percussive claps. After the first hook, the arrangement repeats with another verse, pre-chorus, and infectious hook. There is an artistic bridge with a groovy, choppy piano layer that leads into Love Bomb 's final chorus – eloquently putting a metaphorical cherry on top of this already supremely delicious auditory treat. London-based indie pop artist, Emily Fields, whose emotive vocal talents stem from being "always in her feels". After releasing her debut single back in November 2022, a transparency-laden ballad about being cheated on, she took off on a quick ascent up the music boards. The tracked reached #21 on the iTunes pop chart, leading to Emily having her discography featured on Love Island All Stars, BBC Introducing, and a bevy of music publications (most importantly Pop Passion, of course). Love Bomb is now available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube – so make sure to go and give a couple listens before it totally blows up and goes mainstream. • Review: "West Coast" - Katie Belle

At times in life, we are met with circumstances where we must make painstaking decisions. Decisions that will decide the next few years of our lives. There are even some sacrifices  we must make in order to achieve our dreams and put them into motion. No matter how daunting or simple these decisions can be, they can lead us to our next chapter in life. More often than not, the decisions we make are substantial and quite significant to our story, along with the sacrifices we make along the way, which can prove just how imperative these life decisions are to us. The sacrifices we are willing to make to achieve what we want. “West Coast” by Katie Belle is a song that describes a similar situation. A situation where Katie passionately sings about her wishes of moving to the West Coast to live out her desires of being a star, whilst leaving behind the tender love provided to her by her mother and friends. In the song, Katie morosely expresses that though it will paint her “blue”, she’s still determined. Undeterred despite the miles that would distance her from her home. As Katie sings “It’s calling my name”, set on this new journey of life that she will expedite. The song delicately opens with the sound of stunning piano keys that set listeners in such a pensive state. That is until Katie’s voice settles, in such a delicate manner, her voice perfuming the air with the colors of deep sorrow and a vehement yearning. Her voice harbors true emotion, intensifying the sound by adding percussions that resonate innately with Katie's euphonious voice– highlighting the message of the song. Despite the sound being rather plangent, there is an underlying hint of optimism in Katie’s song that I can’t deny. Though this peregrination may be perilous and a big leap into a new life, Katie has determination. A determination that is motivated by her dreams and wishes of becoming a flourishing artist. Which makes the song all the more empathetic, resonating with listeners who can sympathize. Those who have possibly made a decision in their lives where they had to surrender their comfort of familiarity for a dream they must journey through. Katie Belle is a singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles California, resonating with genres of music like pop and electro. Katie’s passion for singing seemed to start at a very young age, only burgeoning as the years progressed. As any other person with a passion for music, Katie can be seen on her social media platforms singing covers of mostly pop songs and sharing them with her followers and supporters. As Katie’s music career continued to progress, she would even perform at small venues, conveying her love for music, having a desire to share her voice with others and show off her innate talents as a young performer! With her song “West Coast” now out streaming on all music platforms, Katie has since released two other singles, one titled “Daughter” and her most recent single titled “Disco Romeo”! As Katie continues to voyage through her journey as a musician, I will look forward to hearing more of her dynamic sound! Support Katie by following her socials and listening to her music! She has burst into the music scene with her latest single, "Go Go Go," released on August 16, 2024. The song is a self-aware confession about chasing after the red flags in a relationship. Even though she knows this will lead her down a bad path, she keeps going, addicted to the thrill of this person. The infectious pop hooks make it the perfect track to blare out of your speakers and scream along. Make sure to add "Go Go Go" to your streaming library! "Go Go Go" by Dani Josie is an exciting anthem about seeing the red flags as you pursue a new relationship and diving headfirst into it, anyway. Complemented by an upbeat instrumentation, Josie sings, "When I see red I say GO GO GO / The taste is so damn haunting / What I need is a NO NO NO" in the catchy refrain. Here, she gets candid about how she finds in the excitement in abandoning her intuition and going fast with someone that will ultimately turn out to be toxic. It is a fun and honest track that brings in nostalgia with the 2000s pop rock sound laced through the production. Dani Josie is a 19-year-old aspiring pop sensation from Wellington, New Zealand. She has been making music from a young age. Her sound is a blend of pop, rock, and country, taking musical influence from the range of Paramore to Noah Kahan. • Review: "Helpless" - Andreas Moe

Andreas Moe gives us a song that perfectly encapsulates how it feels to be helplessly in love with someone. In this upbeat and rather catchy song, he walks us through the thought process of someone who has fallen deeply in love. The lyrics say, "I know my, my, my mind ain't logical / But I don't know how to not go where you go." As listeners we know through these lyrics how intrigued he is by this person and how much he wants to spend time with them. As the song progresses, we get a better picture of how often he thinks about the person he loves. The chorus says, "Cause from Monday every minute to Sunday / I'm a sucker, I'm your fool / And there's nothing I can do." We can feel the love within the lyrics as we listen to the song in its entirety. "Helpless" gives us a beat that makes it irresistible to fall for the song. We get sounds from the drums, piano, guitar and more. The song has an upbeat and cheery tone, which is fitting for its purpose. The energetic beat makes us want to move our feet, drawing our attention right away. When the lyrics come in to play and Andreas Moe begins singing, it adds an extra layer of spunk. This creates an overall mood that is cheerful and hopeful. We begin to feel like we have a chance at being with the person we're hopelessly falling for. Andreas Moe blends melody, lyrics, and emotion together in order to craft the perfect tone and mood for the song. Andreas Moe is a five-time platinum-certified songwriter. He has worked with artists such as Avicii, Khalid, Tiesto, Cheat Codes, Omi, and Sabrina Carpenter. He's opened for artists like Gabrielle Aplin, Kodaline, and John Mayer. The song "Helpless" follows his singles "Not Yet" and "Wild Enough" these songs are his return from a short hiatus. His work has shifted more towards the pop genre while still maintaining his emotional depth and his singer/songwriter style he's known for. When asked about the song "Helpless," Andreas Moe said, "'Helpless' is about being completely lost in your feelings for someone, experiencing a love so powerful that you can do nothing but go along with it. It's like losing control and being tossed around in a storm of emotions, where the heart takes over and nothing else matters." Andreas Moe has given us something special with this song. I hope he continues to give us many more experiences like this in the future. Written By Destiny Rundquist FOLLOW Andreas Moe: Instagram | Spotify  | TikTok  | Facebook  | YouTube

  • Review: "im not crazy youre just an asshole (toxic)" - JJ Wilde

Nobody likes a bully. Tearing someone down to make yourself feel better isn't cool and no one should have to tolerate that treatment. JJ Wilde confronts this toxic mentality head-on in her latest single, "im not crazy youre just an asshole (toxic)." The singer shares her personal experiences with bullies in the song, elaborating on the inspiration behind the lyrics by stating, "As someone who experienced bullying throughout my life I have absolutely no time for it. Someone making someone else feel like shit to make themselves feel better is the lowest of the low in my opinion. This song is a letter to those who choose to put others down and actively try and hurt others. In my case it was a group of mean girls very similar to the movie (there was even a burn book). This song is a rally cry for those who experience bullying and don’t know how to stand up for themselves. It’s what I wish I had been able to say when I was going through it myself. Eventually I did stand up to them and it all stopped but I am grateful for that experience. I have much more appreciation for people and kindness and standing up for myself and others." Fed up with how people have treated her in the past, JJ Wilde serves her revenge through the pop-rock/alt-rock soundscape of "im not crazy youre just an asshole (toxic)." The track features aggressive instrumentals with heavy guitar riffs, driving drums, and deep bass lines. Wilde delivers the song's impactful message with an edgy finesse, showcasing her gritty vocals and feisty attitude as she slams those who feel the need to hurt others. Reminiscent of pop-rock/alt-rock icons before her, Wilde's gutsy performance on "im not crazy youre just an asshole (toxic)" is similar to acts like P!nk , Avril Lavigne , Paramore , and The Pretty Reckless . A massive part of the artist's life, music has been something JJ Wilde has had an unwavering connection to since childhood. She came to a crossroads in 2018, working three jobs and resigning to the idea that music might not be the right path for her. Wilde persevered despite her odds, continuing to write music and amassing over 500 songs that later became the basis for her debut EP, Wilde Eyes and Steady Hands , in 2019. She has since gone on to release several EPs and a full-length album with another on the way. Wilde's next album, Vices , is set to release September 20th and can be pre-saved here .
