Emily Ricks's latest release “Call It Falling” is a spunky and energetic track that expands on what the dating scene currently looks like. The alt-rock style of the song matches perfectly with Ricks's unique voice which is so reminiscent of when this style of music was at its peak. While the song is shorter than the traditional structure, it accomplishes so much in such little time and transforms itself into a heartbreak anthem. “Call It Falling” is exactly the kind of high-energy song that’s needed for the discussion of what the dating scene is like when you’re young, and Emily Ricks comes across as the best artist to make it work. - Review: "15 MINUTES" - Madison Beer
Madison Beer’s latest release “15 MINUTES” is a thrilling roller coaster you’re never going to want to get off of. A story about chasing your feelings and curiosity, following where your piqued interest leads you, you’ll be drawn into this mesmerizing summer single with its intense synth and Beer’s silvery and smooth vocals. It’s a completely different world, tinted by excitement and anticipation; for those of you who live on instinct, or those who need that extra push to be a little more spur-of-the-moment, this is going to be the perfect song for you. At the core of “15 MINUTES” is spontaneity spearheaded by passion and romantic inquisitiveness. It’s all about letting your body take the reins as the rest of you is taken along for the ride. Ardent, fervent, and wrapped completely in exhilarating romance, I can’t stop listening to “15 MINUTES” on loop. There’s something about its composition that makes me– and will make you– want to just keep hearing it over and over again. The introduction is tentative, with its synth low in the background while a piano slightly brightens the soundscape; eventually, though, the chorus comes as the instrumentals intensify along with Beer’s vocals, forming this immensely addictive sound together. You can feel the motion of the song, and coupled with the lyrics “15 minutes ago, I was layin’ in bed / Then I had a crazy thought in my head”, the narrator’s sporadic movement from their bed into the car is a jostle– a rush– that you can feel your own body doing, too. An immersive soundscape, you perceive each sensation the narrator does. Yet, as much as “15 MINUTES” is a musical experience, it is also a story. The songwriting reveals the narrator not being able to stop themselves from doing exactly what their instincts are telling them, following the thought in their head to drive directly to their lover’s place to see them. I love how descriptions of their to-be encounter are sparse, but nevertheless there: "Show me how much you care, touch me and pull my hair". Still, the song is much more about the moment the narrator decides to leave their home and the ride toward their goal. The line “Don’t know how I got here, but baby, here we are” is a perfect descriptor for those moments when you go with the flow, not realizing how you exactly found yourself in a situation, but knowing that it’s right. “15 MINUTES” is just one of those songs that has the perfect storm of complementing elements: finely composed with an animated soundscape and strong vocals, as well as excellent songwriting to match its atmosphere, it makes for an electrifying listening experience for everyone. Platinum-selling recording artist, songwriter, producer, and author Madison Beer made her music debut at age 12 and has since then transformed into the brilliantly multifaceted artist whose work both inspires and rallies people around her sincere portrayals of what it means to be human. Whether this is love, heartbreak, or self-discovery, her emotive and powerful vocals connect her millions of listeners to the commonalities between one another, and offer an exploratory experience into her beautifully crafted worlds. With over 15.5 million listeners on Spotify and 2.4 billion cumulative streams worldwide, Beer’s reach is global and continues to grow. Her most recent releases include her second studio album, “Silence Between Songs”, dropped in 2023, and her immensely popular 2024 single “Make You Mine”. “15 MINUTES” follows both releases with its own success, having already received over 4 million streams on Spotify alone since its initial release. Beer is currently heading on a brief tour of Asia and Australia which begins in Japan at the Tokyo Summer Sonic Festival on August 17th and ends in Melbourne, Australia on September 2nd, along with having some stops in Singapore and Brisbane. - Review: "Happy Birthday" - Herine
This song, “Happy Birthday” by Herine, is an indie-pop song all about how much you grow and change from year to year. Set with the motif of birthdays, Herine sings about how much you live through without even realizing it. With lyrics like “you’d be surprised by the things you outgrow” and “even heartbreak is a miracle ‘cause it’s crazy that you feel at all,” she gets right to the heart of the matter. Yeah, sometimes you may feel like you waste your life as it flies by - like the lyric “one more year to do what you said you would before 25” - but in truth, everyday of your life you live and learn and love. And that’s enough to make everything worthwhile. “Happy Birthday” is a soft song that ranges from acoustic to more synth-pop style in order to highlight both the delicate melody and the lushness of Herine’s vocals. Starting off with a simple strum melody and some background notes of people saying “happy birthday,” the song brings you into it slowly. Herine’s lovely voice is what draws you from the beginning, hooked on the softness of the way she sings layered over the simple backdrop. The song picks up throughout the two and a half minutes, gaining some momentum and energy but keeping the same feel the entire time. Overall, fans of the sound of the 1975, Alexander 23, and the Bleachers will appreciate the smooth wistfulness of Herine’s “Happy Birthday.” It’s already a favorite of mine. Herine is not only a singer-songwriter, but also a multi-instrumentalist hailing from the great music city of Nashville, Tennessee. Still early in her career, she’s generated an impressive number of fans due to her intricate melodies and stories that tug at your heartstrings. Recently, she dazzled audiences at the esteemed Sundance Film Festival, showcasing her ability and her charming personality. - Review: "Last Words" - Pixia
On her latest single, "Last Words," singer-songwriter Pixia continues her run as one of the best up-and-coming dark pop artists. "Last Words" is a moody breakup banger. One of Pixia's strongest talents is her ability to create music that can be sincere yet so catchy. Its emotionally raw lyricism and Pixia's impassioned vocal performance make the track a perfect heartbreak anthem. Yet, with its pulsating beat and earworm hook, "Last Words" could just as easily light up a club. You could dance or cry, and somehow, both would be equally appropriate. In "Last Words," Pixia makes heartbreak fun. "Last Words" is an emotionally evocative track. From the ethereal vocals to the haunting, wispy bridge, the way Pixia curates a mood is truly unmatched. The songwriting captures the devastating aftermaths of heartbreak with such sincerity. The chorus, "If I told you my last words would you carry on and break my heart in two?" is anthemic. It's the perfect kind of lyrics to scream along to, whether in a concert or just by yourself when you need it. When explaining her inspiration behind the track, Pixia says, "I wanted to create something that resonates with the conflict between head and heart that we all feel at times," which completely comes through. "Last Words" is a dark, fiery pop anthem of vulnerability. With her distinct sound and captivating lyricism, Pixia has cultivated an ever-growing fanbase since her debut. - Review: "Chino" - Marina Vanoff
New single by artist Marina Vanoff, “Chino”, explores the tragedy of a breakup and how intense the aftermath can be. Her song uncovers the dark pit one finds themselves in during the death of a relationship and how climbing out of it can seem so impossible. The song itself is so raw and so beautiful and perfectly captures the despair and loneliness following the end of this relationship. What’s interesting about this track is it stays unique by not following the classic song structure. While the song discusses this difficult subject, “Chino” serves as a reminder to anyone who is in this same position that this experience is universal, and that one shouldn’t feel completely alone. “Chino” is very mellow when it comes to the production of the song, as it keeps its instrumentals very minimal and puts more emphasis on what Vanoff is saying. There’s a lot of regret in her voice as she sings about a lot of the events that took place in the past, but it’s regret that’s focused on feeling vulnerable with another person and that person taking advantage of it. The lyrics “you told me to jump, I drowned and you watched it” really emphasize this as it shows how the other person in the relationship allowed the speaker to get hurt by their actions. Vanoff has a great voice, and it holds emotion so well that you find yourself mesmerized by everything she says. “Chino” is powerful because of how raw it is, and a great exploration of how great of an artist Marina Vanoff can be. Marina Vanoff is a Los Angeles-based artist who spent her life moving around. This sparked her passion for music as she found comfort in writing. You can find this comfort in the work she creates as she hopes her listeners can find a safe space in what she creates. You can especially see this with “Chino” as the song brings comfort to those in similar situations. Her style is influenced by 90’s alternative rock which is always a great area to look for inspiration. Her debut album, “Bones, Baby!”, is currently in the works and is expected to be released later this year. Marina Vanoff’s emphasis on what her music can mean to people shows a level of care that is important when building your artistry and it certainly increases your excitement about where she will take her career next. - Review: "nervous" - chasing luma
With an aim to create music who’s listeners are “able to assign whatever meaning feels appropriate”, chasing luma has gifted fans with another single, titled “nervous”. The one thing he has revealed about the meaning of this track is about its implications of getting in your own way. His typical style of music carries through in this track, with inspirations from the early 2000s grunge era. His discography is full of electronic guitars and intense drum beats, all as well as interesting effects on his vocal track, similar to the sound of artists like Wheatus and the Killers. These qualities allow chasing luma to put even more emotion into the track, as the sound itself feels angsty and frustrated. His lyrics perfectly mimic the intended vibe, while also being vague enough to allow listeners to place their own specifics onto the scenarios. This tactic allows chasing luma to connect to an even bigger audience, and lets a larger scope of people feel relation to his music. In his chorus, he sings, “I can't come down / Its like youre talking to me in cursive / My systems are nervous / I can't come down / And I didnt get this high on purpose / Feels like I deserve it”. He sings about such a relatable feeling: feeling like you deserve the worst that is being handed to you because of your own actions, and being your own toughest critic. Throughout the rest of the song, he sings about his mental spirals and others getting frustrated at his struggles. He also discusses his words of explanation refusing to come out, despite being right on the tip of his tongue. Luke MacDonald finds solace in becoming chasing luma, as it allows him to have an outlet through the world of music. Born in 1998, he allows his early 2000s inspired taste to seep into his music and his sound, and his listeners clearly love his style. He blends this with lyrics about real life issues and mental health, as well as adding a dash of modern inspired technological elements. He has over 10,000 monthly Spotify listeners, along with a slew of singles and an album titled ‘you need to water flowers for them to grow’, released in August of 2022. - Review: "Good Guy" - Devon Cole
Devon Cole introduces us to a self-psychoanalyzing story of having a tendency to pursue toxic men over decent ones in “Good Guy”. The type of relationships you desire is plain to see to yourself and those close to you. Kind men who are interested in your company try desperately to make you feel comfortable, but you know that doesn’t appeal to you. You find yourself constantly doing mental gymnastics to justify preferring toxic men who are not genuinely interested in you. The chase you pursue to troubling boys who drive you crazy is intoxicatingly thrilling. But years of sideways glances from the people closest to you have started to weigh on you. The spicy journey of each relationship you love seems familiar to you. It seems depressingly likely that this preference seems almost Freudian in nature. You have felt abandoned before and keep feeding into your need to be wanted. Despite leaning towards a continuous cycle of toxicity, you wish that one day a good guy will be more than enough for you. Click here to listen to "Good Guy"! “Good Guy” is a commercial pop anthem that relies on energetic and uplifting moods to contrast against the melancholy theme. The single begins with a sweeping guitar instrumental with Cole humming bits of the melody. An upbeat bass line pricks away intertwined with this guitar. There are a few sudden tone and instrumentation changes, which is most prevalent in the pre-chorus lead up. The vocals suddenly hit higher notes as the guitar drops, slowly and gradually builds, and then becomes just as prevalent as the other elements. Each aspect of this single represents an upbeat, funky, and feel-good nature that directly contrasts the lyrics. It is always a unique and humorous experience when the melody and instrumentation of a song differs so greatly from its narrative themes. Devon Cole is a Canadian singer-songwriter currently shining her way through the music scene. She has had a respectable ascent into fame with some of her music receiving viral success after signing with Arista Records in 2022. Her first viral hit “W.I.T.C.H.” has gained millions of streams across multiple platforms. Her music has received critical acclaim from media platforms such as Billboard, Bustle, Earmilk, and Popdust. - Review: "Reconstruction" - KARINA
Growing up is no easy task. As we get older, we become more insecure and aware of the painful moments life can bring. “Reconstruction” is a new single by KARINA that dives deep into the internalized hurt we all try to hide every single day. She said herself that this song explores the constant internal fight we have to push our deepest insecurities and ugliest secrets down to a place where only we have to suffer them. It’s easy to think you’re alone as if you’re holding the weight of the world on your shoulders. KARINA wrote this song with the intention to remind listeners that it’s okay to break down because we all inevitably will. “Reconstruction” is about the weak and strong moments because both of those are important to who we are. “Reconstruction” was produced with intent. KARINA said “While the lyrics talk about the dark and abandoned corners of our hearts, the music and melodies are meant to be an anthem of strength. We made this sound really full and strong so the listener actually feels that they are not alone in this broken down place they find themselves in.” The momentum with the drums feels like the choice to keep talking steps forward no matter how lost we tend to feel. The guitar and synths bring such a hopeful energy. KARINA’s vocals encapsulate the emotion of the story so beautifully. This song was built with so much heart and I hope her listeners are inspired enough to build themselves up with that same heart. KARINA grew up watching Hannah Montana which ultimately led her to her passion of music. With a genre of indie-pop rock and a skill for turning her experiences into songs, her success is no surprise. She released her first single “Out of Air” in 2023 and has since then released three singles, her mini stripped project and her debut album. She brings dark themes into her writing relating to the struggles and naivety of growing up. KARINA’s goal as a songwriter is to remind her audience they may feel alone, but they aren’t. We may be sitting in the dark sometimes but if you reach out, you might grab ahold of another hand. KARINA’s music is truly a gift with the vulnerability she lays out for us to relate to. - Review: "Where Flowers Grow" - ORKID x Lew
"Where Flowers Grow" is a heartfelt gem in which ORKID shares her own experiences with loss and conveys them in a way that comforts the listener, blanketing them in the notion that no one must face their hardships alone. Having undergone the pain of losing her mother, ORKID provides her listeners company as they navigate their longing through a sweet melody they can play again and again. Just as the name suggests, one of the most impactful moments throughout the song is when ORKID and co-writer Lew refer to the place "where flowers can grow", signifying the place where our yearning is at its peak; it is a profound motif that paints a vivid picture of a beauty that blossoms even in the absence of presence. Through their personification of the special someone or something that we deeply long for, we are reminded that we've been gifted with the "flowers", the joy of memories to console us in the present and carry into the future. Shedding light on the mourning of the things we love and the blossoming of new growth, the two talented songwriters emphasize that there is comfort to be found in every "you're not alone". "Where Flowers Grow" is a beautiful, thoughtfully written track that tugs on our heart strings and grounds us in our purest forms of reminiscence. "Where Flowers Grow" cannot only be classified as a song, but as an entire musical experience from beginning to end. In its opening verse, ORKID's voice sends the listener into a state of entrancement as we absorb her every word. The distant, ethereal guitar coupled with her rich tone work to capture a melancholic heart, but they're juxtaposed by the consistent bass that strikes us. This contrast not only creates a complex balance between the song's delicacy and its weight, but it also demonstrates ORKID's distinct musical identity within the genre. When Lew enters on the second verse, he backs ORKID's sentiment with powerful vocals that cause our hearts to stir. His emotional and intricately lyrical delivery in both the verse and chorus spark a fire that burns optimistically within the listener. Lew's voice maintains the sensitivity of the track while also expressing a strong sense of purpose towards conveying its message. By the end of the song, we are wrapped and bound by the powerful chorus and overall production ORKID and Lew have masterfully built in their collaboration. As the song fades out, we are left with an irreplaceable feeling brought out by the new meaning behind the phrase: "where flowers grow". Swedish singer-songwriter, ORKID, has transformed the indie and electro pop genre, entering an entirely new league of her own! Solidifying her growing brand and presence in the genre, ORKID has worked with artists and producers like Mapei , Toby Romeo , and Shane Stevens , dousing herself in the abundant diversity music has to offer and sculpting her brand into something truly unique. Dedicated to her mother, ORKID's upcoming EP will posses an accumulated charm that mirrors the sentimental weight it carries. Lew, a rising name in songwriting, has recently started to make ripples in the indie scene, having most recently released his single "Paint the Sky" in May. Working with artists like GERD , Lew has expanded his discography and continues to develop as an artist. - Review: "I'm A Six And She's Like A Ninety" - Labit
Labit’s latest release “I’m A Six And She’s Like A Ninety”, disproves itself- showcasing his immense talent and ability to articulate what so many struggle to: admiration and love. The piece is a wholesome love letter to his partner. Labit writes as if admiring her from afar, and yet it's written from right next to her. The basis of the song is a disconnect in how impressed he is with his partner and how he views himself, but not as a matter of insecurity. He doesn’t use this as a means to make remarks on himself, in fact, he doesn’t speak down on himself in the slightest. Which is why the perspective he has of her is so powerful. He considers himself perfectly fine, and yet, in his eyes, she still surpasses him. He lists her qualities with intense appreciation, qualities which some may even consider flaws. These are vetted as reasons towards why he loves her, and those which don’t quite fit as positive traits provide proof for his love for her. He not only accepts, but admires, that which others would mark as undesirable. The instrumentals of the piece are largely acoustic and lovely simplified. The easygoing but earnest tone they present offers the perfect pathway for a song like this. It’s sweet and slow, gifting it a touch of romance, but not in the way partners talk to one another. Keep in mind, this isn’t a song to her, this, instead, feels like watching a friend fall in love before they've realized it. It’s removed, and somehow, that makes it all the more moving. Labit’s vocals and manner of stating his lyrics display this as well. He takes on a storytelling role, his honest voice breaking down all the little things only a loving eye sees. Because of this, his imagery is incredible and the song as a whole offers a complete world to every listener. Labit is the creative project of Stephen Ordonez, an L.A. based artist whose expertise lies in all aspects of musicality- singing, songwriting, producing, and more. This work has been recognized and collaborated on by a long list of other established artists such as Emei, Mario, Outwild, and many more.
