This song, “playing pretend” by della, is an interpretative folk song that tells the story of a girl who’s trying to piece together her own world view in light of someone else’s. Right off the bat, you’re drawn into this song through her talking about this guy and how he “wrote a song about the ways [she feels she’s] lacking,” and how she doesn’t [understand how beautiful [he sees] the world.” She tries to connect with him but he would “rather just stare into space.” She admires him, she’s jealous of him because she has “the tendency of ignoring beauty in the world” when he somehow seems to see it all. But by the end, she wonders if he’s also “always a little boy playing pretend.” It’s easy to see other people around you and feel the need to compare, feeling like you’re missing something or there’s something wrong with you. But truth is, it’s never that simple. “Playing pretend” is a soft yet upbeat indie-folk song that uses simple guitar strum and emphasized vocals to keep a soothing melody and a strong story throughout the three and a half minutes. Starting off quickly with della’s voice sliding right into the first verse, you’re not asked to wait to hear what to expect. Despite having moved on with life, Golden finds himself reflecting on those intimate, quiet moments that he shared with his ex. The lyrics, “As time goes by, I will always be // On a couch with you // In St. Louis, Missouri,” to me really speaks as a metaphor symbolizing the love that you will always have for your ex – especially your very first one. Golden’s lyrics also showcase the growth and maturity that comes with healing. He talks about seeing his ex move on with someone else and wishing them the best, proving that although heartbreak can hurt, you can walk away from it with fond memories and even greater lessons. Golden’s clear-cut, aching vocals and acoustic melodies really carry this vulnerable, pop track. The guitar strums pick up in intensity throughout certain parts of the song, but for the most part, the emotional and reflective track maintains the same tempo as Golden’s voice masterfully conveys the story of his first heartbreak. While the song incorporates a few synth sounds that can be heard in the background, its soft, acoustic vibes allow the artist’s harmonies to shine. Golden’s vocals and strong storytelling ability, remind me of Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes – two pop artists who are not afraid to pour their hearts out into a song. Bastille flawlessly integrates cinematic level instrumentation into their iconic songwriting throughout their entire discography. From songs such as “Pompeii” to the meaning behind the band’s name, Bastille has always found inspiration in history and works of art. Their upcoming album, & (Ampersand) , is centered around stories about different historical figures and pop culture icons. In their latest single, “Blue Sky & The Painter,” the group explores the story of the Norwegian expressionist painter, Edvard Munch, and his experience with depression. He struggled with alcoholism and was admitted to a hospital in 1908 due to his declining mental health. After being released, he began looking into external subject matter as his muse, rather than his inner demons. In the chorus, lead vocalist and the track’s sole songwriter, Dan Smith, illustrates the first glimmer of sunlight after weeks… months… years of glum darkness. The narrator feels hopeful, expressing their relief that they might finally be free of the depression that has been keeping them trapped. While this is all anyone who has battled with mental illness would ever hope for, it is also scary when this is all they have ever known. In the bridge, Smith sings "Would I be who I am without the sadness in me?” This gut-wrenching lyric pierces the heart of the listener, especially those that have been in the shoes of the painter. Once they are healed of their depression, will they still be creative? Or was the dark cloud surrounding them what made them unique? Similarly to any Bastille song, “Blue Sky & The Painter” tells a thought-provoking story using real life scenarios that any listener can relate to, highlighting the band’s remarkable talent. “Blue Sky & The Painter” contains the powerful soundscape that Bastille has become known for. In the chorus, Smith repeats the lines “Is that a blue sky?” and “It’s about damn time.” The repetition emphasizes the desperation behind the lyrics, using not only the words but the manner in which they are recited to enhance the heavy emotions. The song begins with an ethereal intro containing Smith’s stunning vocalizations and soft synth waves. After a couple measures, a deep bass is introduced, reeling the listener into the song’s mesmerizing sound. When the verse begins, an acoustic guitar complements the stunning vocals, propelling the listener into the effervescent soundscape. In the pre-chorus, the production starts to build before breaking into the chorus where the intensity reaches its peak. Bastille has the impeccable ability to tell a full cinematic experience through vivid storytelling and complex instrumentation. Their music has resonated with me since their debut album’s release, making them one of my favorite bands of the modern era. Bastille is a British alt-pop band, formed as a solo project in 2010 by founder and lead vocalist, Dan Smith. The group later expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist and guitarist Will Farquarson. and drummer Chris "Woody" Wood. They have released four full length studio albums, one live album, and twelve EPs. “Blue Sky & The Painter” is the band’s latest single from their upcoming fifth album, & (Ampersand) , set for release on October 25, 2024. Electrifying and hard-hitting, “Naive,” is a punk rock song by the female sibling trifecta, Hello Sister. Highly energized and moving, the track centers on feelings of betrayal and toxic relationships. The lyrics touch on the hurt of trusting someone only to have them break it after multiple chances are given to redeem themselves. “Naive” is about discovering that a friend was never really one, the road to healing from a fallen relationship, and realizing that one bad experience does not define future connections. The song's title matches the anger and naivety of the person who holds on to hope that the other person is better than they are. The shame that follows from blinded faith as the band notes, “You took my dignity and wore it like a medal.” Upbeat and measured, “Naive” sums up the leftover emotions of anger and distrust that listeners from a young age can relate to. Culminating in powerful electric rock waves, “Naive” is riotous and full of teenage exasperation. The band is reminiscent of 2000’s female rock singers like Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams from Paramore with a more contemporary feel around the edges. Vocally, the track is flawless, with the echoing voices of the singers blending harmoniously in the verses, even amidst the powerful drum chorus. The chorus is exhilarating and thunderous, as the distressed emotions break through the heavy instruments and the hurt seeps through each lyric. Though the track instrumentally provides an outlet for anger and outrage left by the feelings of betrayal, vocally the song displays a raw voice, heavy with hurt and laced with poignancy. The liberating anthem takes on a hopeful ending as the song ends, “I'm really good at putting the pieces together again.” The song lastly promises that despite being betrayed, the other side is truly “the fool” for taking advantage of their kindness. Go To Hell Next, we have "Go To Hell" which is a very dark-toned, but fun and heavy rock song. With lots of crashing drums and distorted guitars, this song goes hard. "Go To Hell" is about having people who don't like you, and being okay with it. The gist is, "Oh, you want me to go to hell? Well that's fine by me." Nothing infuriates a hater more than having that unbothered energy; and this is the perfect song for that. WHIT shows off vocally in this song; using a little extra southern twang, blues notes in the melody and having a growling/raspy timbre to really match that hardcore rock instrumentation that is backing her up. If you're not headbanging to this song and making a little bit of stank face, then you're not listening to it right. Grass Is Greener "Grass Is Greener" breaks things down a little bit in tempo, but still remains high energy and incredibly catchy with it's signature vocal and guitar refrain that repeats through out and makes you want to sing along. This song is about having everything somebody could want in a picture perfect partner, but then you end up meeting someone who makes you question your relationship. This song has a very strong Southern Rock soundscape with a stomping beat. WHIT sings with grit and roar in her throat to really emphasis that power and bravery, like a lioness. But possessing a batch of her new favorite, White Widow, Frances allows it to continue blinding her from the harsh reality of her relationship. Unfortunately, in "White Widow," Bina resorts to a coping mechanism that she's used to and wants the freedom to do it peacefully, which may reflect a deeper issue. "White Widow" by Frances Fiend is short and to the point, spanning only two minutes and thirty-one seconds in length. From the start, Frances sets the tone for the record with aggressive staccato hits from the percussion and guitar parts as she sings through the song's chorus. Once reaching the verse, the instrumentation increases in movement, defining the track's pace.
