  • Review: "Waiting on You!" - Jazzie Young

Jazzie Young’s latest single “Waiting on You!” portrays an anticipation-filled crush where you’re too nervous to make the first move. It seems most of your time is spent thinking about them. You try to fight your thoughts and let the feelings pass, but something about their attention occupies your mind. You recognize your own feelings, the question here is if there’s any reciprocation. A crush is scary, unfamiliar, and new to you. How many times have you waited for an afternoon love-confessional phone call from them? You want them to reach out and confirm your feelings, starting something through their own provocation. They occupy your every idea and hope, and you could wait everyday for them to just tell you they feel the same way. Click here to listen to "Waiting on You!"! “Waiting on You!” is an indie pop single that intertwines its head-in-the-clouds narrative with airy dreampop music. The unique storytelling being depicted showcases nervous, loving feelings that derive from an unconfessed crush. As Young’s airy and sweet vocals sing about unrequited love, the instrumentals remain consistently atmospheric. The first aspect we hear of this song is a slight reverb of electronic sounds and mixed vocals. This depicts the mindset the narrator currently has while combing through their feelings. There are few drops from the constant echoing of the electronic instruments among the traditional ones. This seemingly continuous blending of instruments, vocals, and edm reflects the continuous cycling feelings of want and impatience. Each element compliments the other and curates a perfectly tuned musical and narrative experience. Jazzie Young is an American singer-songwriter currently based in Los Angeles, California. Growing up, Young was always musically inclined and began playing classical piano and violin at just three years old. Her father, Jesse Colin Young, was a founding member of the band The Youngbloods and helped to instill this music knowledge and drive into her. Her music has always been an effort-filled body of work that reflects her own feelings. Her first major project was a seven track EP that had a music video to accompany each song. This amount of dedication and talent has been consistent in all of her work since. She has been featured in many articles and review sites such as Wonderland, EarMilk, and LADYGUNN. Her debut album is set to release this year and has been in production since 2023. Make sure to follow her on social media and give “Waiting on You!” a listen! • Review: "Deciduous" - Leo Golo

"Deciduous" by Leo Golo captures the bittersweet emotions that come with impermanence and growth, describing the way seasons change and how we go through emotional transitions. The song’s lyrics talk about fleeting moments and the inevitability of letting go especially in relationships. The line "you’ll leave, we’ll be deciduous" reflects the natural cycle of things fading away, like leaves falling off a tree, and how we have to accept change. There’s rawness in lines like "Maybe you're too young to find out," capturing the feeling of uncertainty in the face of emotional vulnerability. Even though we know things won’t last, the song also reminds us that there’s a certain kind of beauty in these moments: "Love you, once every week or two, so we don’t get too serious." It’s a way of enjoying the fleeting connection without clinging too tightly. The song captures that delicate balance of passion and short-livedness, highlighted in lines like "our kiss is delirious" and "I still want to touch you, wherever you tell me to." There's a sense of urgency and longing, paired with the awareness that this might not last, but it’s worth experiencing while it does. The lyrics present the idea that we can’t control time or how long memories last: "If time is all that we have, but we can't control it," reflecting on how we spend the moments we’re given. The song’s refrain "you'll leave, we’ll be deciduous," emphasizes the theme of things coming to an end but also suggests that there's something recurrent and inevitable about it. Musically, "Deciduous" mixes atmospheric indie pop with a chill vibe, creating a space for contemplation. The minimal production, with soft piano and gentle synths, gives it a meditative feel that makes you think about your own experiences with love, loss, and growth. Leo Golo’s smooth and raw voice adds depth to the song, carrying the themes without overwhelming them. His delivery feels intimate as if he's singing just for you which makes the entire experience feel personal and reflective. The sound draws you in, perfect for those moments when you're alone with your thoughts, navigating the chaos of life and relationships. Leo Golo’s style combines deep and meaningful lyrics with atmospheric sounds, inspired by artists like Bon Iver and The Japanese House. He is from Europe and he started making music in his teens and has been becoming more talented ever since. With "Deciduous," he has further made his place in the indie pop scene, connecting with listeners through his honest songwriting and minimalistic production. His music resonates with anyone who’s experienced the complexity of letting go, making him a great artist to listen to as he continues to grow and release more emotionally-driven songs. • Review: "Old Man" - Kylie Rothfield

There isn't always honor in dating, leaving us with the risk of finding ourselves in toxic situations and being used. It's frustrating to find out that someone isn't looking out for your best interests and is instead using you for their own personal gain. Kylie Rothfield shows us this darker side of love in her new single, "Old Man," shedding light on what it's like to fall for an older man who uses you to feel younger and better about himself. Though the situation is upsetting and hard to grapple with, Rothfield empowers listeners by creating an electrifying anthem that exposes men like this ex-lover for what they are--sad, old men that must tear others down to build themselves up. Co-written and produced by artist Kylie Rothfield & queer indie alt-pop icon Mothé, "Old Man" is a compelling blend of alt-rock and indie-pop that is bound to capture hearts around the world. The track features analog synths, vintage upright piano, & gutsy electric guitars, creating a captivating mix of instrumentals to accompany Rothfield's powerhouse vocals. Adding to the song's unique composition, "Old Man" was recorded in a cabinet style to give listeners an authentic live band feel. Following in the footsteps of edgy, female-fronted alt-pop, Rothfield's "Old Man" is perfect for fans of Olivia Rodrigo, The Beaches, Paramore, Lucy Dacus, or Beach Bunny. A force to be reckoned with, singer/guitarist Kylie Rothfield has taken the alt-pop world by storm with her soulful voice and skillful songwriting. The artist captured the hearts of many, including Alicia Keys, who described Rothfield as "a blossoming, powerful flower with so much heart, so much talent, so much emotion and vocal power." • Review: "HEAVEN IS A HARLEY" - Tiger La Flor

Tiger La Flor’s latest single, “HEAVEN IS A HARLEY” takes an interesting look at breakups and the ends of relationships. Released January 17th, this single views these events as a moment of freedom and liberation, instead of the usual view of heartbreak and sadness. This is a refreshing new take, and shows La Flor’s power and self-sufficiency. La Flor shared that this track was an attempt to capture “the freedom that comes after you learn detachment and let go of something that’s holding you back”. In my opinion, she certainly accomplished this, with an almost Lana Del Ray Americana sound, full of nostalgic whispers and church bell chimes. Opening with a simple piano line and the added sound of a motorcycle starting up and driving away, listeners buckle up for a slew of road-related breakup lyrics. The first verse recounts the end of the relationship, and how even though they tried, it simply was not the right fit. The chorus follows after a beat drop and La Flor’s voice swells with emotion. She sings, “I'm better when I’m set free / Baby, heaven is a Harley / I’m done chasing all the wrong things / That open road has come to call me”. Slightly whimsical and entirely girlboss, La Flor finds truth and comfort in herself and her newfound single-ness, instead of staying trapped in a relationship that did not suit her. Tiger La Flor is a pop and country artist who has amassed over 400k monthly listeners on Spotify. Dubbing herself “a quarter Japanese, a quarter Korean, and half cowgirl”, La Flor combines the Japanese heritage she grew up on with the ‘70’s American classics. Highlighting nostalgia and her upbringing in the pacific northwest, La Flor’s music is a combination of all of the things that make her her. Also seen on season 14 of Love Island, she now has multiple singles, EPs, and an album on streaming platforms. • Review: "The wolf" - Maddie Regent

Photography: Anna Koblish Graphics: ash adams "The wolf" is the newest single from Maddie Regent , a song about a toxic person that used to be in her life who's presence reopens old wounds. This is how they are introduced in the opening of the song. The lyrics are a take on the idiom "a wolf in sheep's clothing", as they may seem like a nice person, but Regent knows the harsh truth about them, according to her adverse reaction to them. The line "I don't wanna be afraid of you" proves this even further; Regent has a bad past with this person and feels as though she needs to conquer her fear of them, as she knows who they really are. The production is consistent throughout "The wolf", and you can still tell when the verses end and the choruses begin. This is concurrent with Regent's harmonies throughout the song, which build during different parts of "The wolf". The instrumentation consists of drums and upbeat guitar chords, as well as harmonious strings, along with fun pop sound effects. Regent's edited and pitched down vocals are used as another instrument in the song. The bridge is comprised of background vocals that are continuous, just like the upbeat vibe of this song. Everything mixes perfectly together in "The wolf", with nothing feeling out of place. Maddie Regent is a music artist from Toronto, Canada. She has been interested in making music for several years after and while growing up listening to different pop stars. Based in New York City, she now has own her pop songs, such as those on her EPs Miss Regent in 2021 and Girl of Your Dreams in 2023. She plans on releasing her album On the phone with my mom in 2025. She has also released other amazing songs, including "Still in Love" and "Heavy Little Things". She is a singer, songwriter, and she edits and directs her music videos, which all show that she is a very talented and creative musician. • Review: "Hey Siri" - Neon Massacre

Neon Massacre’s newest single “Hey Siri” is a remastered debut from 2023, detailing the fallout and heartbreak of a short-lived yet impassioned relationship. Chloe Ferguson, the face behind the project Neon Massacre, details her confusion over a relationship that has ended with Siri, iPhone’s digital assistant. “Hey Siri” shares Ferguson’s darkest feelings about the ending of this partnership. She still thinks about him and wonders when she’ll finally forget about him, albeit this person has hurt her. She talks to Siri as a confidante, similarly to talking it out with a friend. However, Ferguson going to her phone rather than a friend emulates the feeling of having no one in your circle who can understand the heartbreak you’re going through— opting for someone who can only listen as you pour your heart out. “Hey Siri” is a special listen, as its poetic story-telling is relatable for anyone going through similar emotions. Ferguson’s fear that she will never get over this person, as she thinks of him “every night”, is a universal experience that creates an instant attachment to the song and its meaning. Click here to listen to Hey Siri! “Hey Siri” tugs at your heart strings while simultaneously stunning you with Ferguson’s astonishing voice. Ferguson creates a combination of a folk and pop ballad in her latest track, creating a sound that’s immediately entrancing through her vocal and genre adjustments. “Hey Siri” is sung above an emotional piano ballad, accentuating its raw lyrics. The poignancy of Ferguson’s description of her heartbreaking relationship makes for a song that requires multiple listens to completely grasp the intensity of her emotions during a titular time. Going with the title of the track, a voicemail is played in the background deep beneath a stripped-back piano and drum beat just before the bridge begins. This intermission prepares for the finale of the song, a crescendo that bears listeners to the powerful capabilities Ferguson’s voice holds. This finale to the track provides a satisfying ending to an already mesmerizing song. Fans of Gracie Abrams , Lizzy McAlpine , and Noah Kahan will find enjoyment in Neon Massacre’s “Hey Siri” from its poetic lyrics and a simplistic but effective instrumental.  Welsh singer-songwriter Chloe Ferguson is the creator of the project Neon Massacre, producing music that is both poetic and catchy. Neon Massacre’s discography ranges from upbeat pop pieces to hallowing ballads. Ferguson’s pop tracks draw inspiration from synthpop sounds of the 80’s, reminiscent of artists from the time like Tiffany and Wham! . Her ballads that combine folk and pop music showcase both her adept vocals and songwriting abilities. “Hey Siri” is Neon Massacre’s most recent release, a follow-up to her 2024 singles “Cut My Scissor”, “December Valentine”, and “What If They’re Watching”. • Review: "Atlas" - Filiah x welovemelodies

Meld yourself into a world of wonderous melody and genre-bending whirls with “Atlas” from artist Filiah and open art collective ‘welovemelodies.’ “Atlas” starts off moody and funk-laced, with Filiah laying down catchy, melodic vocals alongside a powerful, backing bass. The track smoothly transitions between folk-like, indie-propelled sounds to a near full-blown mixture of rock and alternative. This song is not one thing nor aimed toward one goal. With the blend of eclectic instruments with Filiah’s power-filled, yet smooth and polished voice there is no doubt that “Atlas” is a song like no other. Off the top of my head, there is no artist I can draw comparison to. While the sound of “Atlas” is overall simply unique and indescribable, the track brings me back to my childhood with its use of banjo, guitar, etc., and reminds me of early 2000’s country, folk, and alternative music. Some fragments of this song lean more toward an angsty, Alanis Morissette while others imitate the energy of a throwback from The Chicks. “Atlas” is a complex, raw, and very telling song. Much like its story of confusion, frustration, love, and faith in oneself, “Atlas” is authentic and powerfully relatable – especially to young listeners.  The simple line, “You made it look so easy!” from Filiah, aimed at herself while speaking into a mirror, is a small example of how emotionally complex and intelligently written “Atlas” is. The song takes simple, human concepts and transforms them into reflections of struggle, forgiveness, compassion, and connection. While delving into these topics, listeners can hear exact emotions in Filiah’s voice. At times where the song discusses more frustrating, compressing feelings, Filiah’s voice matches the tone perfectly and precisely emphasizes what she wants to say. On top of its well-rounded sound and impressive ability to connect with others through its blend of lyricism and layered instruments, “Atlas” is ultimately a song that speaks to the heart. There is not a moment left for listeners to misinterpret its lyrics, nor a question on how the artists are feeling in a particular moment, and it beautifully describes struggling to navigate life and believe in yourself as well as how to show yourself forgiveness & kindness when needed. Filiah is an Austrian indie-folk artist. After releasing her debut album “For Someone”, Filiah decided to take a step back from music altogether after experiencing exhaustion & complexities that came with the music industry. Upon stepping back from music, Filiah’s songs circulated throughout Austrian singer-songwriter circles who believed in her and her music. Members of these circles decided to create a songwriting retreat on the Croation coast, where the open art collective ‘welovemelodies’ warmly welcomed Filiah. welovemelodies is a group of songwriters, music producers, and artists dedicated to creating lovable music of various genres. When Filiah joined welovemelodies at this retreat, the song “Atlas” was born. This song not only is a “rebirth” of sorts but additionally a story of conquer over writers block and the struggles that come along with that. • Review: "Lemon Teen Scent" - River Dallas

River Dallas and his brand new single “Lemon Teen Scent” has arrived. This song captures the chaotic and restless feeling of being young. The lyrics present undertones of freedom and self-discovery with a hint of introspection. Its opening verse is gritty, while the pre-chorus and chorus juxtapose this by filling the song with lyrics which symbolize innocence. “Twenty-two on a Tuesday/ Fly by blue jay, yeah” is only one example of Dallas’ playful lyricism. Overall, “Lemon Teen Scent” is a vibrant listen filled with hidden emotional struggle. It probably represents the complexities many of us felt (or still feel) as young teens. And for that, I think it will resonate with anyone whose experienced the bittersweet feelings of growing up. The musicality of “Lemon Teen Scent” is simplistic; the song features a basic drum beat and smooth guitar lines to create an easy-going, feel good sound. The fusion of pop and rock elements make the single feel nostalgic, yet modern. The production is extremely impressive and up to par with some of today's top rated artists. River Dallas’ deep and captivating vocals are reminiscent of Billie Eilish’s hushed conversational tone. This technique often allows for deeper connection to the listener which for this profoundly personal topic, was an excellent choice.  Hailing from Denmark, River Dallas is an emerging indie-pop artist whose chill melodies and energetic flair will impress you from the start. With "Lemon Teen Scent" now streaming on Spotify, it is clear to see he has the unique ability to connect with an audience on a deeper level. The talented vocals and lyricism which shine through this track also presents River as a capable force to be reckoned with. It's safe to stay this is only the start of a fantastic artist's career. • Review: "High Season" - Jon Bryant

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for slow indie songs. Artists like Bon Iver and Novo Amor are some of my favorites… and so is Jon Bryant! Bryant recently released his new single “High Season”, and it gives off all of the vibes that I hoped it would. This isn’t the first song of Bryant’s that I’ve reviewed… but I will say… it’s my new favorite. There’s a sense of desperation in the song that I feel Bryant nails in every piece he writes. Bryant sings of the loss of the American Dream as the housing market goes up… leaving many our age barely able to afford a place to live. Bryant himself said, “My generation can’t buy homes and every year seems more and more hopeless.” Aside from the lyrics, I am always instantly drawn in my Bryant’s dreamy, soft vocals. It feels like a warm blanket is being tucked around me whenever he sings. With “High Season”, there is also a sense of tiredness to Bryant’s voice… which I think pairs perfect with the message of the song. He’s exhausted of having to stress and struggle to live, and pours that feeling out onto the page with this song. As for the instrumentals, like with most soft indie-songs, the focus relies heavily on less instruments, more vocals. “High Season” featured a beautiful acoustic guitar, and even the use of some light drums. I feel like I really got to delve more into the meaning of the lyrics and truly appreciate Bryant’s voice this way. Jon Bryant is a favorite of mine, as you’ve likely guessed. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Bryant is a mastermind in his craft, and carefully translates his deepest inner thoughts into open-hearted lyrics that leave me feeling all sorts of emotions. He has been releasing music since 2009, and even has an album releasing soon titled "Therapy Notes", which “High Season” will be featured on! If you are also a fan of this kind of music, or you just want a good song to reflect with, I highly recommend giving this one a listen. “High Season” is streaming everywhere, now!
