  • Review: "Arrow" - Laura Marano

Laura Marano’s latest release is an ode to every situationship out there, perfect for the Valentine’s Day blues. “Arrow” discusses the phenomenon of having undeniable, magnetic chemistry with someone, but never following through with it. After running into her person, Marano wrote the song to describe this excruciating experience. It is like clockwork. They reunite by some happenstance, and instantly hit it off. Sparks fly, but neither of them makes a move. Marano tells the story in such vivid detail that the listener feels like they are experiencing it firsthand. The first verse kicks off the track with the lyrics: “Checkmate or checked out// Heart racing, head down// Your face and my mouth// Playing it in my mind// Known you a long time.” These lyrics set the stage of the track, showing the indisputable sexual tension between the two people, while describing the nerves that prevent either of them from making a move. She continues with this structure by re-counting the complicated game of cat and mouse they are playing. They meet up, they talk, they act like two lovers do. They anticipate each other’s next move, only to be left with nothing but disappointment and longing. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, many would chalk it up to cupid not shooting his arrow, but Marano knows this is not the case. In the chorus, she sings, “Cupid’s in the air tonight// But he got an arrow in a gun fight// Too hard to resist// But we do it anyway// It’s stupid that he wants to try.” She knows that it is not up to Cupid, or anyone else, to bring the couple together. Instead, it is up to one of them to finally make the first move after years of endless games. The track consists of clever lyrics that accentuate Marano’s brilliant songwriting. With “Arrow”, she further highlights her rightful title as a Triple-Threat in the industry. “Arrow” is a remarkable track composed of a complex production and poetic lyrics. The song begins with an elegant, two-string chord progression that effortlessly guides the listener through the verse. Additionally, a synth beat is utilized with a reverb effect that mimics being in an empty stadium. This provides an ethereal element that causes the listener to feel like they are floating on air. When the chorus starts, the bass takes control and the production completely changes. The shift brings an energetic component to the track that pulls influences from multiple different genres. The newly added electric guitar and the fiery energy is reminiscent of the classic rock style, displaying Marano’s phenomenal range. Throughout the track, the listener is blessed with her enchanting voice. The melody is flawlessly paired with the vocal harmonies that further enhances the ethereal atmosphere. Listeners cannot help but be mesmerized by Marano’s impeccable vocals. Her voice provides a soothing effect on the listener, compelling them to want to listen to the song on an endless loop. “Arrow” is a multifaceted track that illustrates Marano’s versatile artistry and demonstrates that she could dominate in any and every genre. Laura Marano is a singer, songwriter, and classically-trained musician. In 2019, Marano dropped her debut EP, Me. Then in 2020, she released her second EP, You. These two projects combine to showcase that “there are always two sides to every story.” In 2021, she released a deluxe version of You. In July 2022, she released the surprising third chapter, Us. Currently, fans anticipate the release of her upcoming debut album. Not only is Marano a skilled artist, she is also a talented actress. • Review: "Happiest Day" - Chloe Copoloff

Chloe Copoloff’s latest release is the perfect song for the broken hearted that have witnessed their former partner move on to their happy ending. “Happiest Day” was written after Copoloff’s first love got married to someone else, while she was still picking up the pieces of her broken heart. Six months prior to the wedding, he had told Copoloff that he still loved her. As a result, the marriage came to her as a shock and she was left devastated. In the chorus, she sings, “You told me 6 months ago// We don’t know what the future holds// But did you know the whole damn time?// There was no goodbye// I knew you wouldn’t let her go// But wish you would’ve let me know// Before all the papers got signed// It’s the happiest day of your life// But I wish it was mine.” These poetic lyrics paint a deeply vulnerable picture, sparing no details. The narrative Copoloff illustrates exposes her former partner for the emotional infidelity he committed against his current spouse. Her open honesty while writing the track was a cathartic experience for her. It allowed her to navigate these complex emotions and heal from the heartache. The song tugs at the heartstrings of listeners and brings tears to their eyes. “Happiest Day” is a beautifully written track that perfectly encapsulates the feelings of heartbreak, longing, and regret. “Happiest Day” is a melancholy ballad that consists of a soft piano production that complements the somber lyrics. The song kicks off with Copoloff’s ethereal vocals singing the verse, paired with the soothing piano. This sets the stage for the gloomy atmosphere of the track. A couple of measures before the chorus, the acoustic guitar makes a brief appearance, before going silent. This allows the chorus to remain focused on the vulnerable lyrics and haunting piano production. The transition before the second verse reintroduces the acoustic guitar, before adding the bass that continues into the chorus. Then in the bridge, the song reverts back to the piano-only production, as the song reaches the emotional climax. This accentuates the intensity of the return to the full production in the final verse. Utilizing the compositional muting throughout the track creates a unique dynamic for the song and evokes further feelings of sorrow within the listener. “Happiest Day” uses the delicate production and complex emotions to mesmerize listeners and highlight Copoloff’s remarkable talent. Chloe Copoloff is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. At only 9-years-old, she began writing songs as a form of self-expression. When she was 12-years-old, she learned to play the guitar, which brought a whole new life to her songs. She grew up performing, so when it was time to apply for colleges, she knew she wanted to attend a school that offered songwriting as a major. Her school of choice was Berklee College of Music, where she double majored in Songwriting and Music Business Management. After graduating in September 2020, she moved to Los Angeles and landed a job in music publishing. From there, her career began to take off and her songwriting became not only her own, but other artists’ as well. She lends her talents to others in the industry, making herself a versatile artist. After years of struggling with anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder, songwriting became a coping mechanism. She now inspires to write songs that emotionally connect with her listeners and makes them feel less alone. Written By Karlee Skipper FOLLOW CHLOE:

  • Review: "Low" - myles.

Time apart makes the heart grow fonder. Well, at least that's what they say. But when the other person seems to be doing just great without you, it can also make the heart sink like a brick. That is the thorny core of singer-songwriter myles. melancholic single, "Low." The song clicks into place with sparse snaps and gentle, but terse, guitar picking. Myles. stunning vocals are positioned intimately in the mix, showcasing his impressive command of his instrument. As the instrumental opens up into lushly-produced pop, "Low" paints itself into a brilliantly blue portrait. For as somber as the vibes are, capturing soul-crushing emotion, Myles. keeps the song afloat with a trip-hop beat and catchy songwriting. He never turns away from the sorrow fueling "Low," but there's undeniable warmth in its buoyancy. When Myles. repeats "I've been low," in the chorus, it's hard to think of a better expression for it. That's because he does such an exceptional job setting mood with the sound and providing specificity in verse. "Lately you've been doing so amazing, / while I can't seem to get myself to move." The directness of his words can feel chillingly private, like we aren't meant to hear. Isolation, reminiscing on memories, and the desire to drink all fill the space with darker shades of sadness, contrasting stunningly against other moments of levity. "I know it seems dramatic, but I hate this," he remarks with either a grimace or a sigh. Sometimes, connecting with your experience just means directly expressing it in whatever shades feel honest. Myles. is a singer, songwriter, and producer in Sydney, Australia, though born and raised in Western Australia. From a young age, music has been a central part of his life, between performing in local pubs and festivals as singer and drummer in his family's band. As a multi-instrumentalist, Myles. is able to express his art from a broad variety of genres and styles. "Low." is Myles. second, official single. Prior single, "black & blue" fashioned dance-pop with a similarly wide-ranging palette to "Low." This single arrives as the first of a collection hopefully releasing throughout the 2023 year. His relative anonymity and broad genre interests make Myles. a particularly exciting artist to keep eyes out for! Written By Andy Mockbee FOLLOW myles.:

  • Review: "Kiss Me Tender" - Asha

Being completely honest about what you want from your partner can be intimidating. In “Kiss Me Tender”, Asha is not shy about what she wants, describing wanting to get lost in her partner. The singer details how it has been a while since she has been with another person, so they should take it slow. Throughout the single, Asha is shockingly vulnerable and upfront when describing her wants and needs with her partner, which includes an intimacy that goes beyond physical closeness. Overall, this is a pop song that has a laidback melody, raw lyrics, and amazing vocals that will have you adding it to your playlist. The track begins, with a deep bass and the artist singing, "I want you to kiss me tender', setting an intimate tone. The chill instrumental allows Asha's voice to shine. Throughout the single, she is singing with a breathy falsetto pitch that is gorgeous. A standout moment in the track is the bridge. In the bridge, the instrumental is faded, so that the repeated lyrics, "I want to be your muse" are emphasized and echoed. The echoed effect causes a dreamy and hazy quality to her voice that is enchanting. The bridge is abruptly ended by the final chorus, which adds to the feeling of being woken up from a romantic dream. Asha is a Los Angeles-based artist. She released her first project in May 2018, a five-track pop EP titled, "Mercy". The EP is a solid collection of songs that have darker and alternative elements. • Review: "silly sad girl song" - Carlay

Between working and going to school, I don’t find any spare time for myself. It feels like those two spaces have consumed me whole. I don’t have the energy to dress up like I used to. I consume dangerous amounts of coffee to feel any excitement. And I’ve begun to prematurely gray – and not even in a cool spot, I’m graying in my widow’s peak so it’s much more noticeable. Ultimately, I don’t recognize myself anymore and it’s making me feel a little directionless. Thankfully, Carlay’s “silly sad girl song” makes me feel a little less alone in this experience. Carlay’s “silly sad girl song” is an alternative-pop ode to feeling aimless in life that utilizes heavy symbolism to express this sentiment. The song opens with airy synths that mimic a clock ticking. This is not only a symbolic reminder of how much time has already passed, but how we feel time is actively passing by us while feeling lost in life. It also helps establish some background for the first verse; it’s been some time since the artist has felt like themselves. Even when they do find the energy to build themselves up enough to go out in the second verse, they “trip on my clothes on the floor”. This is a double entendre: there is a literal and figurative meaning within this lyric. Clothes being on the floor perfectly capture the state of disorganization we find ourselves in when feeling aimless. It also represents the dissatisfactory relationship we develop with ourselves when in this emotional state because we’re fully conscious of the fact that we’re not ourselves right now. Carlay emphasizes on this relationship with ourselves in the third verse: “I hate the silence / Walking down the stairs / It all echoes backwards / Reminds me that no one is there”. This verse is powerful – it acknowledges how we no longer feel at home within ourselves when feeling lost. On top of already feeling aimless, we’re confronted with the fact that we’ve lost a piece of our identity, too. The chorus drops, and summarizes the notions we’ve become familiar with in the previous verses. But the melody suddenly takes on a bouncy mood – it’s an emblematic change in attitude to feeling lost. Whereas before we were quite self-critical, we’re now coming to terms with being in this state of mind. We’re now embracing feeling lost – the embracement of it eventually leads to finding our way again. Carlay is a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Toronto, Canada. The artist’s discography has confessional-styled songs that give listeners a glimpse into their life and emotional state. Their musical creations directly reflect their view on music; music is a way to detail and recount the many moments that make up our life. By creating music that’s so deeply intimate, Carlay provides listeners with an immersive experience that allows them to transport to different occasions within their own lives. If you’ve enjoyed the artist’s music as much as I have, show them some virtual love in the form of streams, likes, and follows. Written by Giavanna Gradaille FOLLOW CARLAY:

  • Review: "Random Boy" - Edie Yvonne

Have you ever felt guilty for getting vengeance on someone? Edie Yvonne’s, Random Boy, reflects on a boy on the train that did something to make her upset. Although it is not clear as to what was done to make her feel this way, Edie does reveal that she did do something to get revenge. However, she constantly overthinks this act and goes back and forth between saying, “ I made a mistake ”, to threatening him with, “ Don’t forget, I know your name .” Edie uses this song as her way of speaking directly to this mystery boy, and realizing that she didn’t deserve what he did to her, and in order for him to learn that, she gets even. A lot of the time, it's the nicest and innocent people that get treated wrong, which makes sense seeing Edie go back and forth saying that getting revenge on this boy was a “ mistake ” and wasn’t. We see her call him out of his name multiple times and threaten him with more revenge if he attempts to do anything else because she says, “ I’ve been counting your mistakes” , as well as, “Don’t forget, I know your name.” Throughout the song, we hear a steady beat with the guitar and drums. We see Edie admitting to a “ mistake ” she made involving the boy on the train, but once she realizes that it was rather an act of fair vengeance, the beat slows down. This is when we hear her say, “ To a random boy on the train. Don't forget, I know your name. Random boy on the train. I wrote a little song .” Soon after this, the beat picks back up, the instrumentation becomes louder, she projects her voice and then says, “ Fuck you. Quit playing dumb, you know what you’ve done. You’re never going nowhere, but I really don’t care, you piece of shit .” This “ Random Boy ” on the train was at fault for starting some issues with Edie, and this song is a warning for him to never try that again. Edie Yvonne is a 14 year old singer, songwriter and actress based in Los Angeles, California. At the age of 13 and during the pandemic, she wrote an album titled, “ At Ease ” which is also the title of a short film that she starred in. • Review: "Passenger Princess" - Francisco Martin

Have you ever had such strong feelings for someone that in your eyes, they were royalty? Their presence literally brightens up the room and they shine brighter than anyone. They not only are the most beautiful person you've ever seen, but their personality is sweet and they act in such grace, it's impossible not to fall for them. This person is an expensive jewel that needs protected, and you want to be the one to protect them. They deserve the world and the best kind of treatment there is - the royal treatment. "Passenger Princess" by Francisco Martin is a love song that is about catching feelings for someone that is a rare gem like this, and spoiling them to your hearts content. The title is a nod to the internet meme and Urban Dictionary term 'Passenger Princess' that defines as someone who uses someone else for rides. Have you ever driven around with the windows down in the Summertime, blasting music to the point you can feel the vibration of the bass and letting your hair fly in the wind as you scream along with the words? "Passenger Princess" is the perfect upbeat and feel-good song for this type of scenario. The soundscape is dreamy, yet energetic at the same time. It has a nostalgic groove, like a 70s funk flow with Francisco's own unique and trendy modern pop twist on it. One of my personal favorite parts about this song is the classic influence on the style of the horns. They're hazy and reverbed, and the perfect amount of soul to give the song as sense of completeness. Let's not forget the incredible bass line and beat that will have you dancing around in your car during one of your aesthetically pleasing trips. Francisco Martin is a singer, writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist from the Bay Area of San Francisco and is now based in Los Angeles. Growing up in a musically inclined family, Francisco grew up teaching himself how to play guitar, drums, piano and many other instruments eventually leading him to perform. He participated in season 18 of American Idol where he landed a spot in the Top 5. Since then he's released several hit singles, including 'Swollen' and 'Wild Girl' which both have accrued millions of streams, and 2 EP's, 'Beautiful Ramblings of a Restless Mind' and 'Maniac'. • Review: "I choose you" - Anni

Figuring out love and what you're looking for in a relationship is a journey. Though the process might be exhausting and sometimes painful, eventually you'll come to know exactly what you're looking for and what red flags to avoid. You seek to find someone who will value you and put you first, above anyone else. Anni focuses on this in her latest single, "I choose you." The new alt-pop track is inspired by Anni's experience with an ex. She wrote it after her ex told her that there are "too many options" on dating apps and such. After this she realized that really loving someone means choosing them before any of the other "options." No matter what, you choose them every day and make them your priority, your first pick. If someone truly loves you, they'll want to show you off and only you. Slow and soft, "I choose you" gives off a moody romance vibe. Anni's hushed, quiet vocals gently deliver lyrics about what she wants in a relationship—how she wants to find someone she can choose and who will choose her no matter what. Her vocals are supported by soft pop beats and dreamy synth sounds. Though it might have been painful discovering what she wants in a relationship, "I choose you" showcases a positive message. The melodies and harmonies behind the lyrics give an optimistic, hopeful feeling for finding a love that loves you back. Between the chill alt-pop beats and Anni's sweet voice, "I choose you" gives off plenty of fuzzy, romantic feelings. Anni, formerly known as Annika Grace, is a Los Angeles based alt-pop singer, songwriter, and poet. She is the creator of a house concert series in Venice Beach called "Saturdays at Seven." Anni leans in to the new era of music, exploring more vulnerable material. Her music reflects themes that are authentic, raw, and sometimes ugly, as music does not always have to be pretty. Anni's moody music is often included in playlists that feature other artists like Billie Eilish, Hozier, and Birdy. Some other great songs to check out from Anni are "Guest List," "Sedona," and "Dinner Party." Anni is off to a strong start with her music career and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. • Review: "Head and Heart" - KRYSTOF

KRYSTOF is the self-proclaimed “CEO of overthinking”. His latest single, “Head and Heart”, shows exactly what overthinking can do. He sings about how his former lover broke his heart, leaving him confused and blindsided. He clearly loved his partner but looking back on the relationship there were many red flags he did not see. In the chorus, he sings “You’d hurt me for your pleasure, then you send me breakup songs that mess with my head. There goes my head again”. His ex-partner intentionally messed with KRYSTOF’s emotions for their own amusement and sent him mixed signals. Now sitting in the aftermath of the relationship, he is left with a broken heart and a broken mind. “Head and Heart” shows the immense anxiety he felt in the relationship, wondering what went wrong, and questioning everything his ex-partner ever felt for him. KRYSTOF perfectly encapsulates the heartbreak he is feeling in his electro-pop single, “Head and Heart”. The song starts off with a slow tempo, that gradually speeds up as the song continues. The rising tempo may be representing the anxiety that he felt during the entire relationship, wondering if his partner ever loved him. At the end of the chorus, the beat finally drops. He is showing the emotional whiplash that his partner has put him through. He did not know what was coming next, and neither does the listener. KRYSTOF is a 20-year-old pop singer from Carinthia, Austria. He grew up in a family of musicians, prompting him at the young age of 5 to sing songs he made up himself to express his feelings. He taught himself on guitar and wrote his first official song when he was 14. He started gaining recognition by posting cover songs on Instagram, then promoting his original songs on Spotify and YouTube. KRYSTOF was signed to a Viennese record label, Global Rockstar, when A&R manager, Jazz Egger, discovered him on Instagram in 2020. Written By Karlee Smith FOLLOW KRYSTOF:

  • Review: "Honest with Myself" - Mykyl

Mykyl just released his most vulnerable song to date. “Honest with Myself” is about his struggle with depression and self-doubt. He really captures what it feels like to live with depression. Media portrayal almost romanticizes depression as just being sad and crying when life get hard. Mykyl shows the brutal reality of depression. The song begins with him questioning if it is the morning or afternoon, that the light is blinding, and the sunshine feels foreign. Depression is staying in bed until 3pm because he does not feel well enough to get up. Depression is feeling broken because he used to feel alive, but now he feels numb. Depression is not sadness and tears; It is feeling empty and numb. Mykyl would rather feel anger or sadness, because at least he would be feeling something. He spends the song questioning if he is honest with himself because he has been denying his depression. This is a feeling that many listeners are able to relate to. The gut-wrenching ballad pulls on the heartstrings of the listener. Even if you do not struggle with depression, you cannot help but feel the grief Mykyl is feeling. The bridge is the climax of the song, showing the internal battle he is having with himself and those he loves. He sings the lyrics that he does not want pity or love and that he just wants to be alone. He sings these lyrics in such a way that it feels like he is trying to convince himself of this, not his loved one. At the end of the bridge, Mykyl then belts out “don’t you dare leave me alone”, despite spending the last thirty seconds saying he wants to be left alone. He needs to be honest with himself that he does need the support and love, and that he cannot handle this on his own. The entire song builds up to this moment. That being honest with himself is admitting he needs help. He understands now that he is hurting, he is lost, and things are not making sense now, but he needs to have faith that one day, he will no longer feel broken. Michael Van Wagoner, better known Mykyl, is an American pop singer from Salt Lake City, Utah. He has multiple singles available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music. His two latest singles, “Honest with Myself” and “Broken” are the first two songs released from his upcoming EP, “hopeisnowhere”. He writes music that resonates with his listeners. He is open and honest about depression and anxiety, and is an active advocate for mental health. The messages in his lyrics help fans feel less alone in their own struggles. His sound is influenced by a large range of music, including top 40s pop to pop punk. Written By Karlee Smith FOLLOW MYKYL:
