- Review: "August" - Eliza Harrison Smith
Eliza Harrison Smith’s latest single is a dreamy summer ballad about love slipping away. Her song “August” reflects on the feelings of regret when a relationship ends, and the nostalgia that comes with it. Smith thinks back to a time when she was still happy and in love with her partner. Back in the month of August, their relationship was hot like the summer sun. Now, it is a cold November night and Smith is alone with nothing but her thoughts and a broken heart. She sings, “But I can’t shake the thought that if somehow// I could relive August one more time// I think I’d get it right.” She wishes she could hit rewind on the relationship and take back the words that led to the ending. August was a time of happiness and sunshine, but now all Smith experiences are gloomy days. “August” is a beautiful indie-pop ballad that captures the essence of summertime. Smith’s intention for the song’s production was to “capture the light, breezy vibe of the end of the summer.” She flawlessly succeeds as this song sounds exactly like the feelings described. The soft, indie production showcases Smith’s emotional lyrics without overpowering them. This song is the first Smith has released that she personally feels “truly encapsulates” the sound she thrives for. If “August” is anything like her future releases, then listeners will need to be ready for the next big Indie-Pop queen. Eliza Harrison Smith is an indie-pop singer-songwriter from Washington D.C. After seeing Taylor Swift in concert, Eliza began to write her own songs and learned to play the guitar at only thirteen years old. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, she determined that she wanted to pursue songwriting as a career. In the fall of 2019, she moved to Nashville with ambitions to be a songwriter for other artists. She has collaborated with many artists and songwriters, and has been recognized as one of the Nashville Songwriter Association International’s “Ones to Watch”. - Review: "Hate To Love You" - Eliza Bennett
“Hate To Love You” tells the story of Eliza Bennett’s move to sunny Los Angeles, California from the small town in England where she grew up. She has a love-hate relationship with her new home, along with the trials and tribulations that come with it. L.A. has become the “bad boyfriend she couldn’t leave." This is an all too familiar story to so many artists that come to the city of angels to chase their dreams. Bennett admits that she has tried to hate this city that has broken her, but she cannot give up on it. In the chorus she sings, “I’ll hate to love you//City of broken dreams// And yet you mend my tattered seams." This city has continuously beaten her, and yet it has also built her up. Her relationship with this city is an uphill battle, leaving Bennett wondering if her dream is worth the pain. “Hate to Love You” has a freshness to it that cannot be replicated. The track compliments Bennett’s ethereal vocals with a production that is simultaneously unique and familiar. It feels like a comforting hug from a friend, but it is something not quite heard in modern music. The song starts with a soothing piano and violin melody, fitting perfectly with the vocals. The chorus begins with this classical influenced melody, but then switches to a modern pop beat that lights up the song. The song continues with this structure, which highlights the unique attributes of the song. “Hate To Love You” is an incredible addition to Bennett’s discography, continuing to show off her impressive ability to captivate audiences. Eliza Bennett is an actress and a singer-songwriter from the UK. “Hate To Love You” is the debut single to her upcoming debut EP, Late Twenties. The EP included 5 tracks that highlight her journey over the past decade. In 2020, Bennett released a few standalone singles. However, she is not new to the music scene, nor the entertainment industry. Her song, “My Declaration” featured on the soundtrack for the 2008 movie, Inkheart, which Bennett also starred in. Currently, she stars in the final season of the CW series, Dynasty, and is in production for the upcoming Paramount+ drama, Sexy Beast. Her movie, Do Revenge, will be out on Netflix on September 16. With a combination of both her music and acting, Bennett has a surplus of incredible talent to give to the world. Written By Karlee Smith FOLLOW ELIZA:
- Review: "She's Got You" - Jennie Harluk
Artists often use songwriting as a form of escapism. Many times, songwriters will put themselves in the shoes of another person, whether fictional or real. In Jennie Harluk’s latest single, “She’s Got You”, she reimagines a different version of herself. She often wears her heart on her sleeve, leaving her emotions out in the open. However, in “She’s Got You”, she lives vicariously through a version of herself who acts extremely cavalier about heartache. Rather than showing her hurt, she fights back with “nonchalant comments” about her ex-boyfriend. In the first verse, Harluk drops the bombshell when she sings, “She seems nice// We look alike// And I know that’s just your type”. Her ex-boyfriend replaced her with a new girl that could be her carbon copy. She then spends the rest of the song dropping more snide remarks. However, her hurt slips out when she sings, “And I’m haunted by the thought of you// Cause it’s all I got when she’s got you.” Through all the sass and indifference, Harluk still allows heart wrenching words to creep through. This song is eloquently crafted with lyrics of hurt, betrayal, and resentment. “She’s Got You” is a catchy pop-song that highlights Harluk’s strong vocals and emotional lyrics. The verses are steady and calm, slowly leading up to the faster tempo in the chorus. Although the bridge continues the steady and calm structure of the verses, it hits the emotional peak of the song when she sings, “I’m still yours, but you’re not mine.” These lyrics are a punch to the gut because despite all the sarcasm, Harluk is clearly hurt. The music takes a back seat at the end of the bridge, honing in on the lyrics as the chorus returns. Right before the beat drops, Harluk’s voice beautifully harmonizes showing off her insane vocal range. “She’s Got You” showcases her powerhouse vocals that listeners fall in love with her for. Jennie Harluk is a singer-songwriter from Calgary, Canada. From a young age, music has been her passion, and this passion has followed her into her full-time career as an artist. She is involved in every step of the creative processing. She writes, composes, and produces her own music. Her songwriting process is very unique to other artists. With her talent, she has already been featured on several Spotify playlists and has performed at big events, such as Calgary Stampede and Country Thunder. - Review: "Closer" - Hunter
Sugarland crossed with breezy pop sums up Hunter’s latest single. With the intention of capturing a relaxing, summer afternoon vibe, “Closer” captivates audiences and overwhelms them with joy. She explores the exciting rush one feels when experiencing a new relationship. With catchy lyrics, and a hook that sticks, this track is destined to be on everyone’s budding romance playlists. Leading up to the chorus, Hunter works up the courage to ask if the person she likes will “give it a shot.” Then the chorus hits, and the song bursts to life. She tells this potential lover to move “Closer// Move on over till you can’t get closer to me.” She wants to fill the emotional and physical gap between them, and be together at last. Coincidentally, this song has a double meaning for Hunter and her co-writers. The song has evolved into a metaphor for the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the world is slowly transitioning back to normal, we can now “get closer to our loved ones.” This makes the happy, upbeat vibe of the song stand out even more after the past few years of isolation and heartache. Hunter’s intention was to bring joy to listeners which she implements flawlessly with “Closer”. Hunter wrote “Closer” with Grammy nominated producer and mixer, John Alagia, and prolific songwriter, David Ryan Harris. Their collective talent effortlessly blends together to create an outstanding track. The song has an upbeat melody that resembles what could be heard during a romance movie’s honeymoon phase montage. The musical foundation is in the muted acoustic guitar that is complimented by the electric guitar that comes in later. The drums provide for a nice, steady beat that strengthens the cheerful ambiance. A keyboard can be heard in the background giving the song character that it would be lacking without it. The song would not be complete without Hunter’s unique vocals that show off her incredible range. She pairs the song with a fun, lighthearted music video featuring her adorable dog and colorful aesthetics. The peppy, joyful mood is perfectly captured in this video, further spreading the happiness. “Closer” is another remarkable single that makes fans anticipate her upcoming EP. Hunter is a singer-songwriter, actress, and model from a small town in Montana. When she was only ten-years-old, she was performing at local shows. - Review: "Modern Art" - Skylar Lee
Skylar Lee released an energetic pop anthem about female empowerment and self-confidence. “Modern Art” is intended to lift women up who second guess their worth. Often times, women write themselves off as not being good enough. Whether it is romantic relationships, friendships, or careers, women question if they were overlooked by someone because they are not worthy. In “Modern Art”, Lee flips this narrative and encourages women to see themselves as they truly are: a work of art. Rather than believing they’re not good enough, Lee wants to remind women that they are a masterpiece. To remind them that if someone does not see their potential, then it is probably because they only appreciate dull modern art. This song empowers women to believe in themselves while lifting their spirits and self-confidence. Click here to listen to "Modern Art"! Drawing inspiration from 70s and 80s pop, “Modern Art” is a high energy track with infectious synth beats. The production is unforgettable, sticking in the minds of listeners. Lee was strongly influenced by modern pop sensation, Dua Lipa, as well as 80s pop legend, Kate Bush. This is apparent throughout the track, with the combination of both eras of pop. The song is full of feisty lyrics that intrigue listeners and paint the perfect imagery of a pretentious individual. The pre-chorus compliments these lyrics with a presentation filled with sass and attitude. Every aspect of the track highlights the confidence and charm Lee possess—the kind that she hopes will inspire listeners when they listen to the uplifting message. - Review: "Dangerous" - Madison Beer
Madison Beer’s latest single takes the listener on a journey of heartache, vulnerability, and self-discovery. “Dangerous” reflects on her previous relationships, including her own responsibility in their endings. The heartbreaking ballad is the beginning of a new era for Beer—one that is exceptionally more honest and mature than her previous chapters. Though the background of the song is rooted in multiple relationships, the lyrics focus on her most recent break-up. Throughout the song, she questions where the relationship went wrong and what she could have done differently. At the end of the chorus, she drops the hook by stating, “Guess I make love too dangerous.” Beer is blaming herself for their relationship ending, and questioning if she is “unlovable.” This song perfectly encapsulates all the feelings of self-doubt and anxiety that happens after a break-up, especially one that ended abruptly and inexplicably. “Dangerous” is a hauntingly beautiful work of art that emphasizes Beer’s extraordinary talent. The musical composition is led by a string orchestra that resembles elegant Broadway musicals. Beer’s ethereal harmonies add an additional element of elegance that, combined with the production, takes the listener to another world. For the four minutes of the track, the listener is transported to a dreamy landscape that allows them to escape from their troubles. Likewise, the accompanying music video is a breathtaking masterpiece. Beer is seen wearing a gorgeous glittery black ball gown, standing on a platform surrounded by the beautiful orchestra. The simplicity of the video is crucial, highlighting the vulnerability and heartache in the lyrics. The pain and longing Beer is feeling is evident in her performance. The old Hollywood aesthetic makes the video appear timeless and classy. At the end of the music video, the orchestra exits the scene and the lights turn off, leaving Beer alone. This gloomy finale in which Beer is left alone with only her thoughts resembles the feelings brought on after a sudden breakup. Madison Beer is a singer-songwriter from New York. After massive viral success over the past few years, she was signed with Epic Records in 2019. Then in 2021, she released her debut full-length album, Life Support. - Review: "god has a sense of humor" - GAYLE
Up until now, GAYLE’s releases have been high-energy, angsty rock anthems. However, in her latest single, “god has a sense of humor”, she brings out her emotional side. The song tackles one of life’s hardest questions: what is the reason for existence? GAYLE wants to have hope for the future—hope for eternity. She is teetering off of a thin line, trying to balance the pessimistic and optimistic outlooks on life and why we are put on this earth. When the song starts, GAYLE does not waste any time on letting the audience know what the song is about. She begins the song with the insightful lyrics, “When I was 13// A friend of mine died// That’s when I realized// That we don’t live forever.” The passing of someone her age, especially when she was so young, opened her eyes to the philosophical questions about life. In the chorus, she leans into the optimistic side of her ideologies. She believes that people are not inherently good nor bad, but that we are all just trying to make it through this scary world in one piece. At the end of the chorus, she drops the incredibly clever hook that, “God’s got a sense of humor// And I’m not in on the joke.” GAYLE makes listeners reconsider with “god has a sense of humor” and reevaluate their own opinions on the matter. Rather than a high energy anthem, GAYLE slows down her traditional vibe to match the melancholy lyrics in “god has a sense of humor”. The opening of the song begins with a beautiful piano melody that sets the tone of the song, instantly putting the listener into the intimate scene GAYLE has painted. As the song progresses, the bass guitar subtly begins in the background before the drums make their entrance. The drums, eventually led by the ride cymbal, add to the light airy production. The lyric video that accompanies the song provides for another thought-provoking addition to the track. In the video, the lyrics are written in a font that is similar to what a young child may write. The resemblance to a child’s handwriting symbolizes innocence—the kind that GAYLE lost at thirteen years old. “god has a sense of humor” is an emotional addition to an overall angsty discography that highlights GAYLE’s impressive range. Taylor Gayle Rutherfurd, better known as GAYLE, is an 18-year-old pop singer-songwriter. In 2021, she signed with Atlantic Records and released her single, “abcdefu”. - Review: "Die In LA" - Hunter Daily
Hunter Daily’s debut single dives straight into the vulnerability that many artists have a tendency to avoid until their later releases. Instead, in “Die In LA”, she eloquently tackles the struggles of living in Los Angeles and the feelings of wanting to leave the city. This love-hate relationship with the city of Angels is a common theme found in many songs, but Daily’s perspective is unique. Born and raised in Los Angeles, L.A. has always been her home. Many people in her industry previously lived another life, in another city, while Daily has not been able to experience this. Having been stuck in L.A. her entire life, she is now yearning to experience life on the other side. She desires to make a risky move to follow her dreams like her colleagues did when they moved to her hometown, but she is already where she needs to be for her dreams to flourish. In the second verse, she struggles with this notion when she sings, “It’s not a home if you’re a hostage// I wanna see the other sites// Held up by everything I want// How do I leave it all behind?”. She feels trapped in L.A. and questions if her dream is worth living and dying in her hometown. With all these existential questions in mind, Daily knows that no matter what, L.A. will always have a special place in her heart. “Die In LA” is a powerful piano-led ballad that completely immerses the listener into the emotions experienced by Daily. The track begins soft and slow, drawing focus on the lyrics and introducing the melancholy scene. As the song continues to the chorus, the music erupts into a whimsical synth production that brings out the life in the track. Paired with Daily’s ethereal vocals, the composition expresses the strong emotions that are overwhelming her. In the accompanying music video, Daily is pictured in multiple scenes, including a busy party and driving around L.A. in a vintage car. The video parallels the lyrics throughout the song that are making her want to leave, while simultaneously highlighting the beauty of the city that is compelling her to stay. “Die In LA” is a clever musical debut that tells the listener exactly who Hunter Daily is, and the kind of artist she is destined to be. Dating in the modern world is a complicated nightmare filled with emotional turmoil. With new phrases like “situationship” and “ghosting”, it is difficult to determine which feelings are truly reciprocated and which feelings are falsified. In Bethia’s latest single, “Fake Feelings”, she calls out the emotionally unavailable people that have misled her in the past. In the song, she focuses on one specific partner, recalling the twists and turns that led to the bitter end. In the bridge, she lays out all her feelings by singing, “So far from a man, you don’t understand boy// Let you take my hand, still you up and ran boy// I was down to give my all// Like damn you’re so predictable.” She was ready to give this person her all by committing solely to them, just for that person to walk away with neither a warning nor an explanation. - Review: "I Don't Wanna Want It" - The Foxies
A part of being human is having an insatiable appetite for things that we may not need—even things that can harm us. The Foxies address this self-destructive phenomenon in their latest single, “I Don’t Wanna Want It”. Despite knowing that what they are craving is toxic, they still invite it in and revel in the danger. Although this song could be about anything, The Foxies hone in on toxic relationships with people they care for deeply. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” is composed of lyrics that highlight this “self-destructive lust” that they want to resist, but for some reason cannot let go of. In the chorus, the lyrics reveal these hazardous behaviors. The band sings, “You give me scars, I let them bleed// You lit the match, I’m gasoline// It’s making me numb, is that what you want?// ‘Cause I don’t wanna want it.” Not only are they aware of this toxic one-way street, but they believe this person actively wants to tear them down. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” addresses a sensitive topic and allows listeners to release their emotions. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” is an upbeat pop-punk song with a dark background. The lyrics are remarkably vulnerable and gloomy, but the production is lively and intense. Writing the song was a cathartic experience for band members, Jake Ohlbaum and Julia Lauren Bullock, resulting in a banger that releases their anger. The song begins with a soft guitar riff that increasingly intensifies as the song transitions into the pre-chorus. This is when the drums begin, reflecting the classic build up found in pop-punk. Together the two instruments, paired with Bullock’s electrifying vocals, lead up to the chorus where the song explodes with emotion.
